    1871 census: CARTER , HENERY, 71, born Ireland, Anglican, farmer, Simcoe south, Tecumseth, div 1, p. 58, film # C-9960. Ontario death reg'n #13861?: farmer, age 76 yrs, 11 mos; cause of death liver complaint, 12 months; informant Dr. Carter. Obituary of son Robert indicates that Robert was 8 years old when he came to Canada, indicating the family came in about 1836.

  • Note: Lived at Reary Valley; probably the Rice Meredith listed in the Queen’s County Poll Books of 1760 and 1779.
    There are two death records for Rice Meredith of Reary Valley that could refer to the Rice who was married to Mary Hornby: one dated 1801 (source: Betham abstracts) and the other a burial record for Rice buried 11 July 1817, age 79, at St. Brigid's Church, Rosenallis. Personally, I wonder if the will was written in 1801 but was for the Rice who died in 1817?? Seems unlikely, but. . .
  • Note: Mary Hornby; Marriage Settlement registered 16 Jan 1759 (V 216, p 49, #141520, extracted by kw). IFHF website shows marriage taking place in Kilkenny .

I cannot find any further records for her: I have checked both the 1901 and the 1911 censuses, death records to 1934 (the latest year online), marriages after 1900, The OGS Cemetery search index and the OCFA both show only one Charlotte Clarke in York county, at the Toronto Necropolis & Crematorium.
    Parents were David and Mary Lee.

Major Thomas Boyle Meredith

  • Death: About 1922; Rathdown, County Dublin
  • Note: Baptism from Thomas Boyle Meredith, Gent., "To be Ensigns, without purchase" in the 18th Foot, 2 May 1858 (assume this is when he enlisted) .
    The London Gazette of Friday, October 4, 1872, announced that Lieut. Thomas Boyle Meredith was to be Instructor of Musketry for the 18th Reg't. (The Times, 5 October 1872, p. 8). Thomas was made Captain in the 18th Royal Irish regiment 12 June 1873.
    In 1911 Thomas was single and a retired Major, aged 73 and said to be a boarder living at 54 Oldconnaught, Rathmichael, Dublin with his widowed sister-in-law Elizabeth Jane Meredith.
    Death registration: Rathdown, 3rd quarter, 1922, for T.B. Meredith, age 84, probably this man.

John Redmond Walsingham Meredith

    John died during World War I, one of 19 graduates and faculty members of The University of Western Ontario to die during the War. The 19 names are etched on a plaque at the University, unveiled on the 90th anniversary of the end of the War: "Maj. J. R. Meredith (Arts 1899)".

Shortly afterwards he was appointed Adjutant to the 95th Battalion, with which he went overseas in May 1916. When he was preparing to go to France he died suddenly in London. Buried at Toronto.

  • Note: This is probably the family of Sir Vincent Meredith's wife in the 1881 census. "Who Was Who," indicated that Mrs. Meredith was Isobel Brenda Allan, daughter of Andrew Allan of Montreal. I have heard elsewhere that Vincent's wife was named Brenda. The family must have been wealthy given the large number of servants in the household.

In 1906 the family lived at 77 Vansiltart? Avenue, Woodstock and for the 1911 census they were living in Toronto at 130 Farnham; there were 2 servants living in the household. When John enlisted in the armed forces 13 November 1914 his residence was Suite 3, Hampton Court, Vancouver, British Columbia, and his occupation was listed as "manufacturer." He was 5'7". He noted that he had already served 19 years in the military, including time served in South Africa (see website http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010602_e.html).
