John Meredith

M, #11686, b. 28 February 1828, d. 21 January 1913

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 28 February 1828; Ireland
  • Christening: 13 April 1828; Ballyfin parish, Queen's County
  • Death: 21 January 1913; Sault Ste Marie, Ontario
  • Note: According to the estate records of his father-in-law, John was a cousin of Rebecca. Initially we thought he must have died prior to the 1861 census, as Rebecca was living with her brothers in 1861 and thereafter. However, until 1891 Rebecca was always identified as married, rather than a widow. We now think that John Meredith, born in Ireland and living in Algoma, Ontario in 1891 (a farmer in Algoma Mills, listed as "B" in the column headed "Married or Widowed"), 1901 (Parkinson) and 1911 (Gladstone) must be this man--the 1901 census lists his birth date as 24 Feb. 1828 (his baptism record indicates he was born 28 Feb 1828) in Ireland and immigrated in 1857. The 1911 census indicates he immigrated "about 1869." The death registration (#8333: age 85, cause of death "General Debility"), seems to indicate that he died in the Sault Ste Marie district jail (Dis Gaol).
It seems likely he and Rebecca separated sometime prior to the 1861 census and that he was the John who surfaces in Algoma in 1891. None of the 1871 or 1881 Canadian census or 1870 or 1880 USA census indices list any other possible candidates.
Could he also be the John Meredith, born Queen's county, age 19, who enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1846 (FHL film #856059)?
  • Note: Rebecca Meredith; John MEREDITH, 27, Ballyfeen Queen's Co. Ireland, West Essa, s/o Rice & Ann MEREDITH, married Rebecca MEREDITH, 29, Cappa Queen's Co. Ireland, West Essa, d/o John & Jane MEREDITH, witn; John Jr. & John Sr. ME[R]EDITH of Tecumseth. 30 Dec, 1858.
