County Wicklow and daughter of the late Thos Garrett Janeville Esq. who depd. this life the 11th day of Augst. 1822 in the 64th year of her age.”
  • Note: William Meredith; Meredith pedigree has marriage date 12 September 1785. The marriage as listed in the Index to Walker’s Hibernian Marriages only gives the month, not the date. (Ancestry.com extract:)
    Name: William Meredith
    Sex: Male
    Marriage: 20 September 1785
Marriage Place: St. Anne, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    Spouse: Sarah Garrett
    Miscellaneous: William Meredith, Esquire
Source: D. A. Chart. Marriage Entries from the Registers of the Parishes of St. Andrew, St. Anne, St. Audoen, & St. Bride (Dublin), 1632-1800. Exeter and London: William Pollard & Co. Ltd., 1913. 185 pages.
The periods covered by the four parishes are: St. Andrew, 1672-1800; St. Anne, 1719-1800; St. Audoen, 1672-1800, and St. Bride, 1632-1800. The computerization for first two parishes contain a record almost from the beginning of the parishes in question. The last two parishes are of an earlier origin, but their registers contain no date earlier than 1632, in the case of St. Bride, and for St. Audoen, the registers are not very complete for the seventeenth century. The parish of St. Bride is remarkable for the inclusion of many French names, pointing to the settlement of Huguenot refugees in that vicinity.
Frequent reference is made to military personnel from the 5th Dragoons, 6th Dragoon Guards, 7th Dragoons; 11th, 19th, 40th, 42nd, 55th, and 69 Foot; Longford, Warwickshire, and Worcester Militia; the Inverness Fencibles, and Prince of Wales Fencible Infantry.

Wexford. Anne was the sister of Gabriel Rice Redmond, Inspector General of Hospitals, and Henry Thompson Redmond J.P., of Killoughter, County Wicklow. John's nephew, Edmund Allen Meredith (1817-1899), described seeing his uncle again in 1853 : "a jolly looking, grey haired, hook nosed, old gentleman came down stairs and announced himself as Uncle John Meredith. His good humoured face beaming with kindness, seemed exactly what it was when I saw him before, some twenty five years ago." Two of the four children of John and Magdalene died young (Anne and Ralph), leaving :
    (1) John Walsingham Cooke Meredith (1809-1881) J.P., of London, Ontario.

Edmund Allen Meredith

M, #11388, b. 7 October 1817, d. 12 January 1899

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 7 October 1817; Ireland
  • Death: 12 January 1899; Toronto, Ontario
  • Note: Edmund's father died when he was two years old. His mother remarried and left for Canada, leaving him behind with her unmarried brother, Robert James Graves. He enrolled in Trinity College in 1833, at the age of 16. In 1842 he came to Canada and became a senior civil servant in the early Canadian government. In October 1865 the family moved from Quebec City to Ottawa, in preparation for the national capital being established there. At that time the children were said to be: Mary 9, Alice 7, Arthur going on 3 and Ethel 6 months. It seems that during his early years in Canada he was also appointed Principal of McGill University, as the following item in the McGill News (the alumni quarterly) in the summer of 2006 notes:"McGill Principal Edward Allan Meredith, appointed in 1846, was actually absent for half of his mandate. He left Montreal in 1849, but because McGill's governance was in disarray, no official body was available to accept his resignation until 1853."
Interesting news item in 1847 when appointed Assistant Secretary of the Province of Canada (col. 3):

Both Edmund and his wife kept diaries throughout much of their adult lives. Sandra Gwyn's 1984 book, "The Private Capital", (published by McClelland and Stewart, Toronto and awarded the Governor General's book prize in 1984), features the lives of Edmund and Fanny and provides a fascinating glimpse into the social life of the upper middle class in Canada in the late 1800s.
See: for further biographical information on Edmund.
An online photo of Edmund and his family is incorrectly labelled as William Ralph Meredith. See:

Harriet Meredith

F, #11391, b. 12 July 1813, d. 8 March 1906

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 12 July 1813; Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 8 March 1906; Ontario
  • Burial: Church of the Ascension Cemetery, Hamilton
  • Note: 1901 census has birth date as July 1813--another unidentified source had 12 July 1812. Family stories have her born in 1810. Census indicates she immigrated to Canada in 1820, but records elsewhere say 1824. In 1901 Harriet was living in a boarding house in Hamilton, Ontario. Her children all lived elsewhere. Cannot find registration of her death.
  • Note: William Henry Kittson; Reid's Marriage Notices, p. 161, give the date as June 20, whereas a news item from the Dublin Evening Mail of 15 March 1841 says:
"January 15, at Coburg, Upper Canada, by the Rev. A.N. Bethune [probably the famous Norman Bethune?], William H. Kitson, Esq., to Harriet, only surviving daughter of the late Rev. Doctor Meredith, Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin."
Re: the discrepancy in the date reported by Reid, I'm guessing a transcriber incorrectly read "Jan" as "Jun", but unsure of explanation of the 20th vs 15th.
