Edward Meredith

M, #11352, d. December 1696

Parents

Biography

  • Marriage: Before 1670; Unnamed wife; Dublin
  • Marriage: December 1671; Elizabeth Williams; St Peter and St Kevin parish, Dublin
  • Marriage: Before 1678; Judith; Dublin
  • Marriage: Before 1679; Jane; Dublin
  • Marriage: 27 November 1684; Elizabeth; Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: December 1696; Dublin, Ireland
  • Burial: St Peter's Parish, Dublin
  • Note: It has been suggested Edward had five wives as indicated here, based on records in St. Peter's Parish, Dublin. However, recent discoveries indicate there were at least two different Edwards living on Bow Lane in the parish at the same time, and possibly more. Hence the wives listed herein must have been married to at least two and possibly three different Edwards. Which of these Edwards, if indeed any, was the father of Mathias of Templeraney, Rice of Rearymore and probably Thomas of Garr, is unknown.
MM found: Records of the Merchants Guild, Dublin 1601-1686
"5th. August 1664. John Stockes merchant admitted a brother of this Guild upon grace especiall and for the fine of five pounds sterling and has paid for his admittance 2/- and for wax 2/- and has put in for securitie Edward Meredith to pay all taxes."
And KW notes: "I found the following reference in the Calendar of State Papers of Ireland: 22 June 1667 Edward Meredith Feltmaker of Dublin: "A few months ago I found an Edward Meredith 1653 in a list of Dublin Goldsmiths. Putting these together with [MM's] find of an Edward Meredith 1664 in the merchant’s guild, then it looks credible that there were indeed (at least) two Edward Merediths around at that time, who probably included the Edwards recorded at Bow Lane in the Church records. The goldsmiths and feltmakers had their own guilds and the merchants guild was a separate and the most senior of the guilds. It seems a little unlikely that there was a single Edward doubling up as a feltmaker and goldsmith. I’m not familiar enough with the guilds to say how likely it would have been to be in one of those two guilds and a merchant guild as well. Could there have been three Edwards?!"
As well, the parish register for St Peter and St Kevin parish has the following records:
Catherine Meredith, dau of Edward of Bowe Lane, bap and buried: Apr 1 and 10, 1670 (no documentation as to the wife of Edward here)
Robert, son of Edward and Catherine of Bowe Lane, bap 12 Sep 1671 (the timing for this child is about right for a new birth following the death of an infant in April 1670, suggesting this is the same Edward as the father of Catherine above)
Two months later (25 Nov) we have Ruth, wife of Edward of Bow Lane buried. So we now have an Edward whose wife is Catherine, and one whose wife is Ruth.
Just over 2 weeks after Ruth was buried, an Edward marries Elizabeth Williams, and 2 years later, November 1673, their son John is baptised.
January 30, 1675, another John baptised, son of Edward and Mary of Bow Lane--is this another Edward? It is only 13 months after Edward and Elizabeth had a child.
Not quite 2 years later, Nov 1676, Ann, dau of Edward and Elizabeth baptised and buried.
June 1678 we have Edward and Judith of Bow Lane, parents of daughter Margaret.
Six months later, John, son of Edward and Jane buried
In December 1682, Mary, the wife of Edward was buried (in 1675 we had Edward and Mary of Bow Lane, so I think we must assume any other couple with wife having another name must be another Edward--i.e., Edward and Judith of Bow Lane--we don't have anything identifying Edward and Elizabeth as being of Bow Lane, but we must have at least two different Bow Lane Edwards according to these records).
In August 1685, an Edward marries Jane Lloyd and in October 1687, Elizabeth, dau of Edward and Elizabeth of King Street is baptised. In March 1690, Ann of Bow Lane is buried, and in December 1696, Edward of Love Lane is buried.
In August 1699, Edward of Love Lane is buried; December 1701, Jane of Love Lane is buried; and in Apr 1712, Jane of Love Lane is buried.
[I wonder if "Love Lane" could be a transcribing error for Bowe Lane? Regardless, even without Love Lane and Bow Lane being the same, these records reveal that there had to be at least two different Edwards of Bow/e Lane during the late 1600s. As well, there were one or more other Edward/s living on other streets in Dublin at the same time.]

Mathias Meredith

M, #11361, b. before 1672, d. April 1729

Biography

  • Birth: Before 1672
  • Death: April 1729; Ireland
  • Note: Mathias was said to be of Templeraney, County Wicklow. The lineage of his ancestors has not been verified and must be considered uncertain. It has been claimed that Mathias was a descendant of John Meredith (buried 29 December 1596 in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin), brother of Bishop Richard Meredith, but this now seems unlikely. Those of us researching this family are more confident of the relationships among the descendants of Mathias. However, even then, in some cases evidence is somewhat circumstantial, and researchers are cautioned to maintain a healthy scepticism about some of the claims herein and elsewhere!
Possibly the Mathias Meredith named in a 1724 Deed concerning lands of Rice Meredith of Reary, which seems to imply that Mathias and Rice were brothers (see also separate entry). From EM website:
"Rice Meredith was party to a deed of 1724 where a Thomas Meredith of Garr in Kings County passed land in Reary More, etc. to Rice Meredith out of brotherly love and not to Mathius Meredith."

Thomas Meredith

M, #11362, b. about 1702, d. 2 December 1761

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1702; Queen's county, Ireland
  • Death: 2 December 1761; Rearymore, Queen's county, Ireland
  • Note: Thomas' descendants were said to include the Rearymore Merediths of Queen's County. His tombstone reads: "Here lyeth the body of Thomas Meredith who departed this life the 2nd day of December in the year of our Lord 1761, aged 59 years." Thomas' will named seven children, his sister Margaret Jones, mother Elizabeth and cousin John Meredith. The graves of Rice (buried Rosenallis 1732, aged 72), Thomas and Mathew are all side by side and enclosed within a fence. Thomas's eldest son was named Rice, providing additional support for belief that his father was Rice. Hence they are assumed to be three successive generations of this family.
Thomas' cousin, John Meredith of Templeraney, may provide a clue to a connection between the Queen's and Wicklow Merediths.

William Meredith

M, #11375, b. April 1752, d. 9 June 1791

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: April 1752; Ireland
  • Marriage: 19 September 1785; Sarah Garrett; St. Andrew's Church, Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 9 June 1791; Ireland
  • Note: In the marriage settlement William was said to be from Ballykillcaven [sic, but Hibernian Magazine listing spells it Kilcaven: ]] in Queen’s County, documenting a connection between Templeraney where he was born, and Queen's County. A search in http://seanruad.com reveals that Ballykilcavan was in Curraclone parish, near Athy. Google maps shows Ballykilcavan about 3 km east of Stradbally. William died less than 6 years after he married; he and Sarah had no family.
  • Note: Sarah Garrett; Meredith pedigree has marriage date 12 September 1785. The marriage as listed in the Index to Walker’s Hibernian Marriages only gives the month, not the date. (Ancestry.com extract:)
    Name: William Meredith
    Sex: Male
    Marriage: 20 September 1785
Marriage Place: St. Anne, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    Spouse: Sarah Garrett
    Miscellaneous: William Meredith, Esquire
Source: D. A. Chart. Marriage Entries from the Registers of the Parishes of St. Andrew, St. Anne, St. Audoen, & St. Bride (Dublin), 1632-1800. Exeter and London: William Pollard & Co. Ltd., 1913. 185 pages.
The periods covered by the four parishes are: St. Andrew, 1672-1800; St. Anne, 1719-1800; St. Audoen, 1672-1800, and St. Bride, 1632-1800. The computerization for first two parishes contain a record almost from the beginning of the parishes in question. The last two parishes are of an earlier origin, but their registers contain no date earlier than 1632, in the case of St. Bride, and for St. Audoen, the registers are not very complete for the seventeenth century. The parish of St. Bride is remarkable for the inclusion of many French names, pointing to the settlement of Huguenot refugees in that vicinity.
Frequent reference is made to military personnel from the 5th Dragoons, 6th Dragoon Guards, 7th Dragoons; 11th, 19th, 40th, 42nd, 55th, and 69 Foot; Longford, Warwickshire, and Worcester Militia; the Inverness Fencibles, and Prince of Wales Fencible Infantry.
