  • Note: Living at 126 Stephen's Green, Dublin when son Richard baptised in 1844. Richard served with the 13th Light Infantry Regiment. He was made Major 15 December 1843. His rank was Captain at the time of his marriage.
    Death registration, Dublin S. District, Vol. 17, p. 524, age 77 (extracted by KW), cause of death bronchitis, informant was James Creed Meredith.
    From
    "Richard Martin Meredith, son of Ralph Meredith, bought the townland of Slievedotia, parish of Whitechurch, barony of Barretts, county Cork in 1857 [from Thomas E. Crooke]. He married Adelaide Creed and they were the grandparents of James Creed Meredith (1875-1942), a distinguished Irish judge of the early 20th century. In the 1870s James Creed Meredith of Dublin owned 38 acres in county Cork."
  • Note: Adelaide Creed; At St. Anne's Church Dublin, by the Rev. Mr. WEST, Capt. R. M. MEREDITH, 13th Light Infantry to Adelaide, daughter of James CREED Esq. of Kilmallock, County Limerick (Limerick Standard, 30 July 1839). Meredith pedigree has marriage date as 24 July 1839.

Richard Graves Meredith

  • Note: Richard was in the medical services of the British Army: he was appointed Lieutenant in 1905, Captain in 1908, Major in 1915, "A/Lt Col" for a few months 1917/18 until taken by ill health; served in Malta 1906-1911, Ceylon 1913-1916, France and Belgium 1916-1919; rest of clipping cut off although able to see that he served in India at some later point. Died 6 Dec. 1926.
    Obituary in British Medical Journal, 25 Dec. 1926, gives middle name as James, rather than Graves, and provides the following additional info: 1904 Graduate of Catholic University of Dublin with degrees M.B., Ch.B. and B.A.O. Entered military as lieutenant in January 1905, became major in 1915.

Sir James Creed Meredith

  • Note: James enrolled in Trinity College 1 July 1859 at the age of 16. His father was Major Richard Martin Meredith. Alumni Dublinensis says he was born in Kent. The 1911 census indicates he was born in England. He completed the BA and LLB in 1863 and the LLD in 1868. The Dublin city Directory of 1878 notes that he was called to the bar in 1864. From http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cavan/1864/JAN.html: January 9, 1864: The following gentlemen will be called to the Bar in the ensuing Hilary Term, which begins on Monday next, the 11th instant: . . . James CREED-MEREDITH, L.L.B., T.C.D., eldest son of R. M. MEREDITH, of 4, Upper Mount street, in the city of Dublin, late Major in her Majesty's 15th Regiment. In 1878 and 1880 he was a barrister at 4 Mount street upper in Dublin. In 1876 he was among those listed in the Landowners List; his residence was listed as 17 Lower Fitzwilliam St., Dublin (also where he lived when daughter Ellen was baptised), and he owned just over 38 acres of land in County Cork, valued at 107 pounds, 10 shillings. He was probably "Meredith Jas C, Q.C, Closes, Fair hill, NW" listed in the city of Cork in 1875 .
    James was one of the Honorary Secretaries to the General Synod, a member of the Representative Church Body (Church of Ireland) and Deputy Grand Master of the Freemasons of Ireland. He was knighted in 1899.
    Resident of 4 Upper Mount St. when he married in 1870. His occupation then was listed as Barrister at Law. In 1867 his address was given a 56 Upper Mount Street. In the 1911 Census, 83 Pembroke Rd, Dublin: James Creed Meredith 68, born England; Nellie Graves Meredith 58, born Cork city, had 7 children, 5 still living; Ralph Creed Meredith 23 and Winnie Ethel Creed Meredith 19, both born County Dublin. There were 4 servants in the household.
  • Note: Ellen (Eleanor or Nellie) Graves Meredith; Witnesses were R. Meredith and Eliza Howe Meredith.
  • Note: Mary Jane Florence Hargrave; Dubliln Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 11 August, 1866: "August 8, at St. Stephen's Church, J. Meredith Esq., Barrister-at-Law, eldest son of Major Meredith, of Upper Mount-street, late 18th Light Infantry, to Florence, youngest daughter of William Hargrave, Esq., M.D., Professor of Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons."
    Witnesses: Thomas Deane and William Hargrave
  • Note: Catherine Carew Meredith; Who Was Who, 1897-1916, gives marriage date of 29 January 1869. However, this was an error. Witnesses were what looks like Iblarke (possibly I. Clarke?) Lane and Wm R. Meredith

    Charles S. G. Caves, formerly of 47 St. Anne's Place, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Thursday, Nov 27, 1980 in his 82nd year.
    Born in Alvinston, Ontario June 25 1899 to the late Mr. and Mrs. George and Ida (Bateman) Caves, he was a retired C.and O. Railroad conductor with 42 years service, and served in the army during World War 1 in England and France.
    Living in St. Thomas for most of his life, Mr. Caves was a member of the First United Church, a member of St. David's Lodge No. 302 A.F.and A.M. was a shriner and a life member of the St. Thomas Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 41.
    He is predeceased by wife Edna, who died in Nov. 1979 and is survived by two sons George of St. Thomas and David of Orwell; by daughter Mrs Nan Balkwill of St. Thomas; brother Harvey Caves of St. Thomas and is the beloved grandfather to seven grandchildren. Mr. Caves is also predeceased by a sister Jessie Becket
    The family will receive their friends at the R. E. Allen Funeral Chapel, 31 Elgin Street. Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Rev. Don Parsons from the First United Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Elmdale Memorial Park. Donations to the Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
