William Bateman

M, #7229, b. about 1801, d. 6 December 1861

Biography

  • Birth: About 1801; Ireland
  • Marriage: 27 January 1818; Lydia Smith; Fredericton, New Brunswick
  • Death: 6 December 1861; New Brunswick
  • Note: The relationship of this family to the protestant Batemans is uncertain; they were members of the Catholic Church. However, Swanton Bateman was a witness to their marriage (York County Marriage registers: Bateman, William, living at Fredericton, was married to Lydia Smith living at Fredericton, on January 27, 1818, by Milne James, Rector of Fredericton. Witnesses: Swanton Bateman and Wm. Henry Green). In 1881 Lydia was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Lydia and Donald McGilveray. Her son Edward, and his wife Catherine, were the next family in the census. On the other side were John and Mary Getty (Mary the dau of John Swanton Bateman and Ellen Jennings), and then the family of Henry Kerr. Also nearby were the William Black family and John J. Bateman and his wife Martha Holland (dau of Mary Bateman). (See 1881 census, div. 3, families 28 to 48). I think William must have been either a brother or a nephew of Swanton Bateman--probably the latter as he was too young to be a child of Charles Bateman and Martha Ellis.
The following probably refers to this man: from the Chatham, NB Gleaner and Northumberland Schediasma, issue dated 14 Dec. 1861 extracted in Johnson's vol. 19, No. 128 and indexed on the New Brunswick Archives web site: "Yesterday week, a house on the Miramichi Road a few miles from Bathurst (Glouc. Co.), was burnt to the ground. It was occupied by an old man named William BATEMAN and some members of his family. In attempting to save some articles, BATEMAN, who was very infirm, was caught in the house. He thrust his hand through a pane of glass and made an attempt to get through the window, but could not extricate himself until the window frame was consumed by fire. He then fell out, but so much injured that he died in a few hours."
  • Note: Lydia Smith; York County Marriage register: Bateman, William, living at Fredericton, was married to Lydia Smith living at Fredericton, on January 27, 1818, by Milne James, Rector of Fredericton. Witnesses: Swanton Bateman and Wm. Henry Green.
