John Reynolds

M, #2377, b. 15 January 1823, d. 21 January 1902

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 15 January 1823; Ireland
  • Marriage: 5 May 1849; Bridget Mulligan; Mount St. Patrick, Renfrew County, Ontario
  • Death: 21 January 1902; Bromley twp, Renfrew County, Ontario
  • Note: John was probably born in County Leitrim, Ireland. The birth date is that given on the 1901 census. The ages on the census records for this family are very inconsistent: in 1851 (age was to be the age people would turn in the year 1852) John is said to be 30, in 1861 36 years (when he was the enumerator, which suggests the 1861 ages should be more accurate--but could this be a transcribing error?), in 1871 49 years, in 1881 59 years. Some of the children's ages are clearly wrong in 1871--neither Bridget/Beatrice nor Michael had been born in 1861, but they are said to be 12 and 10 respectively in 1871, and 18 and 16 in 1881. I wonder if a third party may have provided the information in one or more of these years? In 1851 John was a blacksmith, living in a log house in Bromley tp, Renfrew county. By the 1861 census the family had moved to Brudenell--John was still a blacksmith and there appear to have been some young apprentices living with the family.
The book, "The Story of Renfrew" , indicates that John was the Brudenell representative on the Renfrew county council. There is no date shown.
I have no information on most of this family after the 1881 census (the last year their daughter Bridget, my great grandmother, was with the family). In 1891 and 1901 John had returned to Bromley tp to live with his brother Edward and there is no trace of his wife, Bridget. The children seem to have disbursed far and wide following their mother's death or departure. I have only been able to document the whereabouts of two of the children--Bridget (Beatrice) and her youngest brother, James, who died in 1897. I believe I have identified a third, Margaret, as the wife of Robert Devine of Brudenell tp.
Ontario death registration #22991, 1902: 21 Jan 1902, age 79, gentleman. Died of pneumonia following a two week illness. Reported by B. Reynolds.

Bridget Mulligan

F, #2379, b. about 1828, d. before 1881

Biography

  • Birth: About 1828; Upper Canada
  • Marriage: 5 May 1849; John Reynolds; Mount St. Patrick, Renfrew County, Ontario
  • Death: Before 1881
  • Note: Bridget has not been identified prior to the 1849 marriage record. She may have been from Fitzroy township, (Carleton County). Parents uncertain--father perhaps either Bernard or Brian Mulligan (she did not have a son Brian, so that suggests it would more likely be the former). In 1852 she was said to be 25 years old, but in 1861 she is said to be 30, and in 1871 to be 45!
I assume she died before the 1881 census as she was not listed with the family at that time, but I have been unable to find any record of her death or burial.
