Elizabeth Haggerty

F, #1780, b. 22 March 1840, d. 25 May 1840

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 22 March 1840; Hastings County, Upper Canada
  • Christening: 20 April 1840; St. Thomas Church, Belleville
  • Death: 25 May 1840; Huntingdon Twp., Hastings County
  • Burial: 27 May 1840; St Thomas Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Note: Placement uncertain. Information sent from the Anglican Diocese of Ontario to Ronald Babcock gives her parents as John and Margaret Haggerty of Huntingdon, but another source only names the father as "John." However, I also have a birth record for Elizabeth, daughter of John and Margaret, as 22 Mar 1839. Jonathan is called John in some of the early Hastings County records. I believe the Elizabeth born in 1839, daughter of John and Margaret, was the Elizabeth who married her cousin James and conclude that the Elizabeth who died as an infant was probably registered as a daughter of Jonathan. However, it seems unlikely that she was Jonathan and Sarah's child as Sarah was over 50 at the time this child was born. She may have been the child of one of their daughters. All in all, she is a mystery!

  • Note: Joseph's farm was adjacent to James and Jane Boyd in Pennsylvania in 1850.

Joseph Boyd was born in County Cork Ireland on April 22, 1808. His parents were James Boyd and Jane Haggerty. He was employed by the Canal Co. that ran from Franklin PA to Meadville PA. He worked there for 3 years. He also worked on a canal that ran near Cleveland OH. He bought land in New Vernon Township PA, where he lived for 50 years. He helped build the Mercer County Courthouse.
His wife Rhoda was ill for 12 years before her death in 1874. She was a devoted Presbyterian. Mr. Boyd united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1825. For 20 years he was blind in one eye, then became totally blind. He was a man of exceptionally good memory, pure character, and an ardent Christian. He was a staunch Republican, and must be taken to every election. Joseph Boyd came to Mercer County in 1821.

Edward (Ned) Tanner

M, #1786, d. 1 April 1891

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 19 April 1807; Murragh, County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 28 January 1833; Jane (Jennie) Shorten; Enniskeane and Desertserges RC parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 1 April 1891; Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: St Thomas Anglican, Hastings County
  • Note: An Edward Tanner held a lease in Tullyglass, near Bandon, from 1827, and which was scheduled to expire in 1847 . In May of 1850 an Edward Tanner was listed as a resident of Tullyglass, Murragh Parish, County Cork Ireland. He is also listed in the Griffiths Evaluation which was completed in 1851/52 . It had previously been believed that the Tanners came to Canada in 1852, and it appears this date is possible for Edward. However, son Edward born 1845, is said to have been born in Canada, so the Edward in Tullyglass in 1850 could not be our Edward.
Tithe Applotment records show a William Tanner with holdings in Dunmanway in 1826, and in 1834 in Clashbredane, Kilmichael parish. Ned's four eldest children were baptised in Kilmichael RC parish, and in 1834 an Edward Tanner held land in Clashbredane. Baptism records confirm that the Edward in Clashbredane is the Edward who emigrated to Canada; hence I assume that the William who held land in Clashbredane was likely his father (not likely his brother who was only 17 in 1834).
In 1861 to 1881 censuses Ned was living in Rawdon Tp., Hastings county, Ontario (unfortunately, the 1851 census for Rawdon has been lost).
  • Note: Jane (Jennie) Shorten; http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/14f61d0030459: witnesses were Daniel Hurly and Peg Mahoney

Family: Jane (Jennie) Shorten (b. about 1805, d. 11 March 1893)

William Tanner

M, #1789, d. 8 July 1883

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 12 August 1817; Murragh Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 10 November 1846; Elizabeth Cook; St Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Death: 8 July 1883; Rawdon Twp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: St. Thomas Cemetery, Rawdon Twp, Ontario
  • Note: There was a private baptism record for William, son of William and Mary Tanner, on 12 August 1817. A second record, dated 14 September, 1817, indicates that William, son of William and Mary Tanner of Tullyglass, was received into the church. Children were often baptised privately if they weren't expected to live, and then might later be publicly received into the church.
A William Tanner is listed in the Griffiths Evaluation in Tullyglass, Murragh Parish in 1851/52 . However, a William Tanner was also a baptism sponsor for William Haggerty, son of John Haggerty and Margaret Gawley, September 20, 1843 in Hastings County, Canada West, indicating that this William Tanner was in Canada by that time.
In the 1881 census the following family was recorded:

Charles (Jr.) Bateman

M, #1791, b. about 1765, d. before 25 December 1827

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1765; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: Before 25 December 1827; New Brunswick
  • Note: Birth date estimated from marriage date. The baptism record for Mary (1797) indicates that Charles was "Charles Jnr," suggesting not only that his father was named Charles, but that he was probably still living. This Charles could have been a son of the Charles who married Martha Ellis in 1763 (Marriage License Bonds). Further circumstantial evidence is that his second daughter was named Martha. However, this is a highly speculative placement.
  • Note: Elizabeth Haggertie; Unconfirmed that this couple also the Charles and Elizabeth who lived in Rathclaren Parish, but "Hagarty" baptism sponsors suggest this is the case.

  • Christening: 19 February 1789; Rathclaren Church, Kilbritain, County Cork, Ireland

William Bateman

M, #1793

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 26 February 1792; Rathclaren Church, Kilbritain, County Cork, Ireland
