Elizabeth Haggertie

F, #1417, b. 1768, d. 1827/1828

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1768; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 1827/1828; New Bandon, New Brunswick, Canada
  • Note: It is not certain that the Elizabeth who married Charles Bateman in 1788 in County Cork Ireland was our Elizabeth Haggertie. However, at their baptisms in Rathclaren Parish (only a few miles from Kilmeen Parish), some of Charles and Elizabeth's children were sponsored by Ann, William and Mary Hagarty (names which fit this family, if the missing name of the eldest child was Ann). Moreover, as our Elizabeth was born in 1768, she would likely have married in approximately 1788. However, it is important to remember that this is not proven.
Charles and Elizabeth Bateman emigrated to New Brunswick, probably about 1820 or shortly before then. Hunter (1978, p. 17) notes that lot 32 was sold to "widow Bateman" who left the property to to her son Edward, who subsequently sold it to John Ritchie in 1829. It is believed that this widow was Elizabeth.
Elizabeth's will, written in 1827, named her children, indicating eldest son, second son, eldest daughter, etc. She also gave the names of her daughter's husbands. That information plus the Rathclaren baptism records provide good evidence that these records refer to one family. Daughter Catherine who married 6 August, 1828, was not married at the time the will was recorded, indicating that Elizabeth died before that date.
Some of Charles and Elizabeth Bateman's children later moved from New Brunswick to Middlesex County in Ontario, where many of the Hagertys/Haggertys also settled. One granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Nagle (daughter of Dorothy Bateman and Thomas Nagle), married John Hagerty, a grandson of William Haggerty (1771-1848) in Middlesex County.
  • Note: Charles (Jr.) Bateman; Unconfirmed that this couple also the Charles and Elizabeth who lived in Rathclaren Parish, but "Hagarty" baptism sponsors suggest this is the case.

Family: Charles (Jr.) Bateman (b. about 1765, d. before 25 December 1827)

Mary McBride

F, #1420, b. about 1811, d. before September 1884

Biography

  • Birth: About 1811; Ireland
  • Marriage: 9 September 1835; James Hughes; St James Church, Toronto, Upper Canada
  • Death: Before September 1884; Ontario
  • Note: Mary must have predeceased her husband as she is not mentioned in his will. However, she was still living at the time of the 1881 census, and was then said to be aged 77. In 1871 her age was listed as 70. I cannot find a death registration. Sure would like to know where in Ireland she was from!!
The Huff Genealogy by George Trigg lists Mary's maiden name as Shannon. However, in 1946 Florence Huff Haggerty recorded her maiden name as McBride. Chris Hughes found the marriage registration confirming McBride. George Trigg was unable to give me his source for Shannon.
  • Note: James Hughes; Found in the Upper Canada marriages: 9 September, 1835, Banns, James HUGHES, widower, and Mary McBRIDE, spinster, both of the township of York. Witnesses, Robert TATE, Andrew PARKER. Also listed in marriages at St James Church, Toronto. Mary signed register with an X.

James Haggertie

M, #1422, b. about 1682, d. after 1766

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1682
  • Death: After 1766; Ireland
  • Note: In 1766 James Haggertie Jr. replaced his father as clerk of Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland. At that time James Sr. was 84 years old and had served as parish clerk for 56 years; that is, since he would have been approximately 28 years old. A portion of a 1766 document brought from Ireland (in 1827) stated:
"James Hagertie Senior now 84 years old is Lisenced as Church Clerk for the parish of Kilmeen 56 years, that his Father, Grandfather and all his Ancesters in a hereditary Line since the Reign of King William have officiated as Church Clerks in the respective Parishes of Kilmeen and Ballimony, as by the Records and Registry may appear."
As James Haggerty brought the documents to Canada when he immigrated in 1827, it is considered likely (but can't be proven) that these were ancestors of the James (1790-1870) who came to Canada. I have also been informed by a member of Kilmeen parish that the Parish Vestry Minutes reveal that a James Hagertie served as parish clerk until 1826.
This and other documents were transcribed from the originals by Florence Huff Haggerty approximately 1940. The originals have been in the possession of descendants of James Haggerty of Hastings County since James immigrated to Canada in 1827. I have seen the originals and have photocopies of the originals in my possession.
