• Note: IGI christening record of unknown origin gives estimated christening date for John Gawley: "abt 30 Oct 1812" in Clones, Monaghan (Clones parish is partly in Fermanagh and partly in Monaghan). In the 1851 census John was said to be 38 at his next birthday (next after January 1852). John was listed as a Yeoman, his religion Bible Christian. They lived in a one-storey log house. In 1871 he was a farmer, age 59, Wesleyan Methodist in Madoc (div 2, p. 47, film C-9994). In 1881:

  In the petition he states that the family came to Canada in 1823 when he was 9 years old; in January 1840 he was 23 (some inconsistencies here!). His uncle, James Sherman was a witness to the petition. James did sign his own name; John signed with an X.
