James Haggertie

M, #1751, b. about 1740, d. about 1820

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1740; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: About 1820; Kilmeen parish, county Cork
  • Note: In 1788 Kilmeen parish documents record a James "Hagertie" as being a church warden in Kilmeen parish. Parish vestry minutes record the signature of James "Haggertie" as the parish clerk from April 1798 until March 1811, and as a parishioner until 1819. Other Haggerties who signed vestry minutes between 1798 and 1827 included: Daniel in 1803 and 1804 (identify of this man unknown--possibly a nephew of James?), William in 1803, 1804 and 1805; John in 1804, James Jr. in 1808, from 1818 to 1821, 1823, 1824 and 1826; and George 1820 to 1823.
In 1827 James Haggertie Jr. (born 1790) and his wife Ann Morley left Kilmeen to travel to Canada, bringing with them records of the family in Kilmeen parish. I am tentatively listing James, the parish clerk until 1811, as the father of James Jr. and his 13 brothers and sisters born between 1767 and 1792.
A newspaper item in a Cork city newspaper in 1794 identified both a James "Hagerty" and an Adam Hagerty as being residents and parishioners of Kilmeen--either of them could be the father of the 14, or it may be another unknown man. However, I think it most likely that the father of the 14 children was named James as two of the brothers, Jonathan and George, named their first son James. John's older children appear to have stayed in Ireland or died young and their names are unknown. The Adam Haggerty who married Susannah Kingston also named his first son James, but it is now appears unlikely he was a brother of the Hastings County Haggerties as he was said to have been born about 1799. However, Y-DNA evidence now shows that Adam was very closely related to the family of James Haggertie of Kilmeen parish.
An additional record of a James "Heagerty" in Kilmeen Parish was found in the 1796 Flax Growers' List. Daniel Heagerty and Patrick Heagerty were also listed in Kilmeen at that time (http://www.alphalink.com.au/~datatree/). In 1796 the Irish Linen Board published a list of almost 60,000 individuals who had received awards for planting a specified acreage of flax. Those who planted one acre were awarded four spinning-wheels, and those growing five acres were awarded a loom.

Adam Haggarty

M, #1754, b. about 1799, d. 6 March 1878

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1799; County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 30 January 1823; Susanna Kingston; St. Finbarr's Cathedral, Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 6 March 1878; Blandford Lodge, Clontarf, Dublin
  • Note: Adam Haggarty married Susanna Kingston in St. Finbarre's parish, Cork Ireland in 1823. The parish register record for the marriage indicates that Adam was a shopkeeper from "Woodfield." Woodfield is a townland in Kilkerranmore parish south of Kilmeen and west of Clonakilty. This, plus the fact that their sons' names included James, Marmaduke and Adam, suggested a connection to my Haggerty family.
DNA studies have now confirmed that Adam was very closely related to the family of James Haggertie of Kilmeen parish. . Autosomal DNA tests predict that Adam's descendant is a 3rd to 5th cousin of a descendant of Edward Haggarty and Ellen Lannin; and that he is a 4th to remote cousin of mine and one of my second cousins. These results strongly support the idea that Adam was a cousin of the Kilmeen Haggerties, and that is how I have presented him here. There were at least four Haggertys, James, Adam, Daniel and Patrick, in Kilmeen parish in 1794/96. One of them may have been the father of this Adam and the other the father of our line of the family. Samuel, George and Henry were names from the Kingston side of the family.
Adam was probably a brother (or cousin?) of James and Mary, who were also of Woodfield when they married in St Finbarre's Church in Cork city. Parents are not named for any of them, but as Adam's eldest son was named James, that may have been his father's name--the Flax Growers' List reveals a James "Heagerty" was in Kilkerranmore in 1796. The 1833 Tithe Applotments for Kilkerranmore and the 1853 Griffiths Valuation, both show Marmaduke Hegarty in Woodfield. Based on his age when he died, Adam was born about 1799, and I found a claim that an Adam Hegarty, son of John, was baptised in Abbeystrewry on 12 March 1800.
The Family History Center IGI has two records for each of Adam's children: James, Samuel, Marmaduke, Richard and Adam--one set has them born in "Bannon" Cork; the other has the same names and dates and indicates born in Bannow, County Wexford. Bandon is a town located only a few miles from Kilmeen parish. Henry is only recorded once, in Wexford. The six year gap between Samuel and Marmaduke suggested that others may have been born during that interval and for some reasons their births were not recorded in the source of these data. More digging has turned up several other children who either died young or remained in Ireland rather than emigrating to Australia, as did their brothers.
As noted above, Adam was a shopkeeper in Woodfield at the time of his marriage in 1823. He later joined the Coast Guard. In 1854 the Griffiths Valuation for Morriscastle, Kilmuckridge parish, county Wexford shows Adam Hagerty occupying less than one acre with a house and garden, and on the same block of land the Coast Guard has a "boat-ho. & guard-room." Apparently at least one of his children was baptised in Bannow, Wexford, abt 1834. Bannow parish is on the south coast of Wexford, whereas Morriscastle is some distance to the north, along the east coast. I need to try to find these parish registers! The Griffiths Valuation was not taken in County Antrim until 1862, and at that time Adam Hegarty was living in Aghagheigh, Layd parish, Antrim, again on the same block of land as the Coast Guard. By 1867, when his daughter Ellen married, the family was living in Clontarf (now a suburb north of Dublin). His occupation at that time was listed as Officer, Coast Guard.
Adam was probably buried at the Church of Ireland in Clontarf like his wife, but I was not able to find a stone bearing his name, nor is there a record of his burial in Clontarf. His death was registered 1878, Dublin North district, name spelled "Hagerty", age 79. This suggests he could have been the Adam who was baptised in Abbeystrewry parish (Skibbereen) 12 March 1800, son of John Hegarty (mother not named). However, as far as we know, he did not have a son John, so that raises questions?
  • Note: Susanna Kingston; If the birthdates of the two eldest sons are correct, then Adam and Susanna had one child a year before they married, and their son Samuel was born about a month after their marriage. This may explain why they married in Cork city, rather than their home parish?

George Haggertie

M, #1762, b. 22 June 1792, d. 2 April 1866

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 22 June 1792; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 2 April 1866; Sandy Creek Twp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Boyd Cemetery, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Family story is that George and James and their families came to Canada in 1827. Ships record fround by EH at: shows George Hagerty sailed on the Chambly from Quebec to Montreal June 1827, with wife and one child under 2. They travelled in steerage and their fare was 5 shillings.
George and Mary settled in Pennsylvania. At least one daughter, Martha, lived in Ontario. Martha married John Stout and is buried in St Thomas Churchyard Cemetery in Belleville, Ontario. When Martha was baptised, October 9, 1826, the family lived in Ballygurteen, Kilmeen parish, County Cork, Ireland.
George "Hagerty" is listed in the Mercer County Archives, Vol. 2 (Naturalizations), compiled by Mark S. Painter. George declared his intent to become naturalized 23 May 1830, but there is no record of him having completed his naturalization. A descendant told me that one of his sons lost his right to vote when it was discovered that he had never taken out citizenship. The naturalization record indicates George was born in County Cork, Ireland, a subject of Great Britain and Ireland, emigrated from Cor[k], County Cork in May 1827 to Buffalo, NY in July 1827, age 35. He was a resident of Coolspring tp., Mercer County.
George and his family lived in Sandy Lake tp. at the time of the 1840 and 1850 Censuses. In 1840 the ages of the children fit Mary Anne or Jane, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Amy, Mary and George. Children living at home in 1850 included: Mary, Jane, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Mary and George--did Amy die in the 1840s? Jane and Martha are said to have been born in Canada in the 1850 census, but the Kilmeen parish register documents their baptisms in Ireland. Mercer County cemetery records list this family as spelling their name "Haggertie," making them the only family to retain the "ie" ending on their name. The only children we have much information on are Elizabeth, who married her cousin John Haggerty, and Martha who married John Stout. Their daughter Mary apparently married a man named Norris, as a niece, Mary J. Norris, aged 21, was living with George Jr. and his wife Maria in 1880.
In 1860 the farm was in New Vernon tp. George's real estate was valued at $2300 and his personal estate at $800.
Summary: George born 22 June 1792; married Mary Shannon 1819 - exact date and parish unknown; attended Kilmeen parish meetings April 1821, April 1822, March 1823; lived in Ballygurteen, Kilmeen parish, October 1826; probably the George Hagerty/Haggerty who travelled with his wife on the Chambly from Quebec to Montreal, June 23rd 1827; naturalization record indicates sailed from Cobh to North America, leaving Cork May 1827 and arriving Buffalo, NY July 1827; 1829 estimated birth date of daughter Sarah, said to have been born in Pennsylvania; May 1830 declared intent to become naturalized; 1831 daughter Elizabeth born, said to have been born Upper Canada (Ontario).
From "The History of Mercer County", 1888, p. 1112.
GEORGE HAGGERTIE, deceased, was born June 22, 1792, in County Cork, Ireland. He came to this American continent in 1827. He settled for about two years in Canada, where he was engaged on canals. He married Mary Shannon, of the same county. In 1829 they came to this county, where he was, for awhile, engaged in working on the canal. He had only $1.50 when he arrived in Mercer County. He bought land in New Vernon Township in 1835, where he farmed until April 22, 1866, when he died. His widow died May 24, 1879. They had the following children: Mary, married Thomas Norris; Jane, is a maiden lady, and lives on the old homestead; Ann, died in Canada; James, died in Ireland; Martha, married John Stout and died in Canada; Elizabeth, married John Haggertie, and had nine children: George, James, Mary, Adam, Marmeduke, Thomas, Anna M., Jane and John; Sarah, married E. C. Clark; John, deceased; William, deceased; Amy A., deceased; Adam, deceased, and George. The parents were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The parents of our subject were possessed of a strong constitution, and endured the hardships that go to make up the life of the early settlers. They were buried at the Little Boyd graveyard, in New Vernon Township. George Haggertie, who lives on the old place, was born November 12, 1840, and was educated in the district schools in his neighborhood. He was married September 27, 1869, to Maria McGreggor, born July 24, 1840, in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 26 June 1790; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 25 November 1880; Huntingdon tp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: 27 November 1880; Haggerty farm, Huntingdon Twp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Note: There is an Ann Haggerty age 70 listed on the 1870 census in New Vernon Tp, Mercer County. Others in the household are John 38 and Jane 40, who could have been unmarried children of George Haggertie and Mary Shannon. The next household is also Haggertys: George 29 (son of George and Mary), Mariah 28 and Gallaher F. 15. Other neighbours included Boyd and Burrows. I think Ann in Mercer County is likely Anne Morley--although the enumeration was done June 24, and Anne's husband James did not die until November--a mystery!! I think Anne must have been visiting her family in Pennsylvania at the time the census was recorded.

  • Christening: 30 April 1815; Ballygurteen, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: About 1860; Rawdon Twp, Hastings Co., Ontario
  • Note: Birth date is from record my Grandmother had; baptism date is from Kilmeen parish register. They were probably both actually in the same year, probably 1815??
The Haggerty book did not have a death date for Adam. However, the land record for their farm indicated: Adam Haggertie and wife took out a 100 pound mortgage with Thomas Kelso 12 October 1858. In the 1861 Census, Ellen was listed as a widow. On 27 February 1866, "Vesting Order" was filed by Thomas Kelso "vested in Eleanor Hagerty, widow, and James Haggerty and and other Infants Dependent." The order was registered 9 November 1868. I assume that
Adam had died in 1860 or early 1861.

John Haggerty

M, #1768, b. 2 July 1821, d. 30 November 1893

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 2 July 1821; County Cork, Ireland
  • Christening: 8 July 1821; Ballygurteen, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 30 November 1893; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: 2 December 1893; Boyd Cemetery, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Baptism date is from Kilmeen parish register. John and Elizabeth apparently lived in Ontario after their marriage and until 1864, when they moved to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where Elizabeth had grown up. In 1861 the Hastings County(Canada) census shows them as a household adjacent to John's parents, James and Ann (Morley). Their children Mary, Adam and Marmaduke were baptized in Canada in 1859, 1861 and 1863, respectively.
The USA 1870 census indicates that all members of this family, except John, were born in Pennsylvania. The 1870 Census spells name "Hagerty" and indicates John was a farmer with land valued at $1500. The 1880 US census indicates that all of the children up to and including Thomas were born in Canada. The name again was spelled with only a single "g". (New Vernon, Mercer county, Pennsylvania, NA Film #T9-1155, p. 314B)
The Will Index lists a John Haggerty, Book 7, p. 173, New Vernon Twp, but no date is listed. Could be this John or his brother-in-law, son of George Haggertie, or possibly an unrelated man. The Mercer county web site has a record for John Haggerty which gives date of death as 30 November 1893, burial December 2; cause of death heart disease . John died at his home and the cause of death was heart disease. This record was abstracted from the county death records for the Family History Library. The cemetery headstone gives his year of death as 1894.
From: "History of Mercer County, PA," 1888, page 1163 -1164:
J.C. HAGGERTY, farmer and school-teacher, post-office Greenville, was born October 9,1856, in County Hastings, Ontario, Canada. His grandfather, James Haggerty, emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1829, where he resided until his death. His wife, Nancy Morley, and seven children, accompanied him from his native country to where he settled. John, the father of our subject, was 5th child, and was born June 22, 1822. He married his cousin, Elizabeth Haggerty, November 3, 1854, and came to this county in 1864. They resided in New Vernon Township one, Mill Creek five, Jackson five, and East Lackawannock Township four years, and finally purchased a farm of 105 acres, a portion of land once given to Mad Anthony Wayne for services rendered in war. Their children were George W., Mary, Adam, Marmaduke, Thomas M. and Anna M. James C., our subject, attended the common schools, and one term at the Edinboro Normal, also at the Sheakleyville Academy. He was married June 1, 1882, to Miss S. E. Coril, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary E. (Cramer) Coril, of Perry Township. James and his wife settled on the farm of M. E. Pauley, in Otter Creek Township, which they rented from him in the opening of 1883, and where they still live. During the winter months he is engaged in teaching school. They have one child, Lewis L. Our subject is a Democrat, and has been auditor and assessor three years each, and assistant assessor one year. His wife is a member of the Baptist Church.
    From site of Doug Lusher:
"He came to Mercer County, PA, in 1864. They resided in New Vernon Township one, Mill Creek five, Jackson five, and East Lackawannock Township four years, and finally purchased a farm of 105 acres, a portion of land once given to Mad Anthony Wayne for services rendered in war."
