Marion Jemima Haggerty

F, #1991, b. 26 March 1903, d. 27 September 2001

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 26 March 1903; Rural Municipality of Whitehead, Manitoba
  • Death: 27 September 2001; Spokane, Washington
  • Divorce: Ronald (Jack) Bath Hulland
  • Note: Manitoba birth reg'n #1903-12218065 (registered on 5 October 1931, name indexed as Marian Jemima Haggarty). Birth date of 27 April recorded in family bible. Living in Spokane, Washington at last record. SSDI records birth date as 26 March 1903.
Marion's birth was not registered until she was 28 years old, so perhaps she had to have her birth registered in order to immigrate to the USA? This suggests that she went to the USA in the early 1930s. A record at ancestry indicates she crossed from Canada to Washington state 1 June 1931. She is then Marion Watsdorf so was already married to Charles at that point. There is reference to the dates 1922 to 1926 or 28, and it seems as if those dates refer to time she had previously lived in the US, but the image is very poor. It appears that she must have married Charles during an earlier time when she was in Spokane? It says she is planning a one-month visit to Mrs. A. Johnson of [I think] 417 East Dalton, Spokane, and that her last permanent address was Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. It also says she is 5'3", has brown hair and eyes. Strangely, it also says her mother is Winifred Fisher, of Shaunavon. Winifred was actually her older sister.
In 1930 "Merian Hulland" was a boarder, age 27, had immigrated to the US in 1904, had first married at age 18 and was employed in a bakery as a "Floor Lady." She lived on Fourth St. in Spokane, Washington.
Her address in 1991 was 2601 Barker Rd #75, Otis Orchards, Washington 99027-0201.
Obituary from the Spokesman Review, Sep. 2001: Marion Watsdorf.
"No service will be held for Marion J. "Jim" Watsdorf, 98, at her request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
"Mrs. Watsdorf, who died Thursday, was born in Shaunavin, Saskatchewan. She was a resident of Spokane for 41 years before moving to Otis Orchards 34 years ago.
"When she arrived in Spokane, she worked in the Jacobsen, Ashbrook and Continental bakeries. She then owned and operated the Pyramid Casket Co. with her husband for many years. She also was a seamstress.
"Her husband, Charles Watsdorf, died in 1984.
"Survivors include three grandchildren, . . . all of Spokane; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren." [ I think the claim that she was born in Saskatchewan is likely incorrect. She may have lived in Saskatchewan with her sister after her first marriage and before moving to Washington? smh]

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 2 October 1889; Toronto, Ontario
  • Death: 19 November 1959; Hamilton, Ontario

"Oscar carried on in his father's footsteps in both the furniture and the funeral business. He had two other talents for which he was remembered, being a tremendous hockey player (some say the best ever in Strasbourg) as well as a master at the pool table; many a visiting pool shark got burnt by Oscar. He sold out to Len Bennett and moved to Toronto, then to Hamilton where he died." (Between Long Lake and Last Mountain : Bulyea, Duval, Strasbourg : Volume 1. Published by the

Bruce Clarke Small

M, #1999, b. 8 June 1919, d. 27 January 2007

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 8 June 1919; Strasbourg, Saskatchewan
  • Death: 27 January 2007; Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Note: BRUCE CLARKE SMALL 1919-2007 The Book of Small Dad said I'm ready to meet my Maker, and they meet on Saturday January 27, 2007. We don't know how the meeting went. Dad could be quite opinionated. He was also the most gentle and generous of men. Bruce was a born caregiver and he always put others before himself a tiny flaw perhaps, but in his small way he was huge. He made the world a better and more interesting place. He had his opinions, however the world according to Bruce and traveling Dad's path of life was always a provocative experience. Throughout, he never stopped making us laugh. We all love you, Dad. Bruce was the son of Lester Meredith Small and Eva May Mapes of Strasbourg. His father ran the printing shop and newspaper, The Strasbourg Mountaineer, the organ of the valley east of Long Lake. He had a brother, Jack, and two sisters, Lois and Margaret. The family moved from Strasbourg to Regina in 1929 at the beginning of the Depression, when Bruce was 10 years old. He attended Central Collegiate and met the love of his life, Mabel Steen, when he stopped to pick up a slipper she had dropped. True to his nature, he was always helping people, both in small ways and large. Bruce married Mabel at the Knox United Church in Regina, June 6, 1942. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force on the east coast during WWII as a radar technician. At the end of the war the Smalls moved to Saskatoon, where Bruce completed his degree in pharmacy. After graduation, Bruce opened Small's Pharmacy in Regina. Mabel and Bruce had one son, Bryan, born in 1947. In 1950, the Smalls moved to Toronto. Bruce worked for the very first Shoppers Drug Mart in Don Mills. He often worked two jobs to provide a good life for his wife and son, and he always put the well-being of others before himself. The Smalls moved to Vancouver in 1967, but when Mabel died in 1997, Bruce wanted to return to the places he loved best Strasbourg and Regina. Bruce lived in the Frontenac Apartments on Lorne Street, where he had delivered newspapers as a boy. In 2003, with his son Bryan, he bought the original Small family home in Strasbourg and the home where Bruce had been born. Bruce spent the last week of his life with his loved ones in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Regina General Hospital. The nurses and doctors there were as kind and caring as Bruce had been, and they made his last days in this world as pleasant as possible. Just as Bruce had done all his life, wherever and whenever he was needed.

Jane Haggertie

F, #2000, d. 26 September 1892

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 23 September 1821; Ballygurteen, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 26 September 1892; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Boyd Cemetery, New Vernon Twp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Baptism record from Kilmeen Parish Register. However, in the 1850 US census there is a Jane said to be 26 years old, born Canada. Ages and birth places seem to be all wonky? that census also has George 50 and Mary 40, and those are clearly incorrect. Anyway, in 1860 she was aged 38; in 1870 she was 40. In 1880 Jane was still a spinster, aged 57, living with her brothers George and John. Presumably they were still living on their parents' farm.
Boyd Cemetery records online give her dates as 29 Sept. 1822 to 26 Sept 1892
