Jeremiah Meredith Clarke

M, #2831, b. 4 March 1859, d. 1944

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 4 March 1859; Canada West
  • Death: 1944; Ontario
  • Burial: Greenfield Cem., Arthur, Ontario
  • Note: Jeremiah and Harriet were living in Melancthon Tp., Dufferin County in 1891, as were his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and James Clarke. In 1901 they lived on the family farm with Jeremiah's mother--I would guess they moved there either after his father James died or if James needed additional help to run the farm. By 1911, after the death of Jeremiah's mother, they were living with Harriet's widowed father in Fergus. Harriet's obituary noted that they "farmed in Peel township, at Riverview [Melancthon tp] and Cumnock, before moving to Fergus."
  • Note: Harriet Boyes; Jeremiah and Harriet Clarke lived in Melancthon Tp. on the 1891 Census (Div. 2, p. 43), next to James and Barbara Clarke (nee Small). Other families nearby included Edward and Annie Small (p. 43) and Samuel and Susan Small (nee Clarke) (p. 44).

Family: Harriet Boyes (b. 7 June 1860, d. January 1951)

Herbert Wilkinson Clarke

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1 July 1862; Wellington County, Canada West
  • Death: 23 November 1932; Grace Hospital, Toronto, Ontario
  • Burial: 25 November 1932; Greenfield Cemetery, Peel Twp., Wellington County, Ontario
  • Note: Raycroft has birth date July 10, 1862. 1901 Census: Farmer, living on west half of Lot 5, Concession 16, Peel Tp (100 acres). Their house had three rooms (Peel Tp, div. 3, p. 3). When the birth of their youngest daughter was registered, Herbert was said to be a miller and living in Belwood.
Ontario death reg'n #7048: widower, age 70, date of birth 1 July 1861; residence at time of death was 2029 Dundas St. W, Toronto; cause of death myocardial disease and failure; informant his son, Mr. Clarence J. Clarke, of the same address. Four days before his death Herbert had surgery for a ruptured duodenal ulcer. Survivors listed in obituary in Toronto Star were Eva, Jeane and Clarence Clarke and M.J.W. Ford. Funeral at residence of his son-in-law J.W. Ford, 10 Oakview Avenue, Toronto.

"Susanna Meridith and James Clark came to Canada from Mount Mellick, near Dublin, Ireland. Herbert was born near Marsville, Ontario. For a few years after his marriage, he farmed onthe 16th conession of Peel Township. After moving to Arthur, he ran a chopping mill. In the early 1900's he moved to Belwood and built a dam on the Grand River. Except in the spring of the year the supply of water was not large enough to run his mill. He bought a steam engine which used either coal or wood. Using this for power he chopped grain, sawed lumber and shingles. Feeling that he could make more use of his engine, he got a generator. By connecting the engine and the generator he supplied electricity not only tohis own house, but to other homes in the small hamlet. It was turned on at dusk and shut off at 11 p.m. About 1912 they moved to Fergus and operated a chopping mill there.
"It is interesting to note that Herbert's mother's sister married a Mr. Banting. She was the grandmother of Dr. Frederick Banting the co-discovered of insulin. His father's brother married a daughter of Laura Secord who won fame in the war of 1812-14. They had a daughter Laura Secord Clark."
