Mary A. Shannon

F, #1802, b. about 1796, d. 24 May 1879

Biography

  • Birth: About 1796; Ireland
  • Death: 24 May 1879; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Boyd Cemetery, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Mary's residence after death of George unknown--she is not listed with John and Elizabeth's family in the 1870 census.
The following info is from a message sent to the Cork email list by Jack Crowley, 21 Dec. 2010:
"Shannon is a name that occurs around Durrus in west Cork. They were all originally Protestants, Church of Ireland I suppose though there were some Methodists in the area. They came in from England pre 1600. "The principal local landlord was Evanson who held a lease from Lord Bandon. The lease expired in the fullness of time and Lord Bandon took over the management of the property. He built Durrus (previously known as Fourmilewater) as a model village. "Many Protestants from this area established themselves in Rochester, NY. They were known as the 99 cousins (or something similar). They controlled the city of Rochester in Tammany Hall style politics for about 75 years up the 1940's. This was considered unusual. Usually it was catholic Irish cliques who operated in this way."

Mary Anne Haggertie

F, #1803

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 23 March 1822; Ballygurteen, Kilmeen Parish, Co Cork, Ireland
  • Burial: Boyd Cemetery, New Vernon Twp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Baptism record from Kilmeen parish register indicates a daughter Anne was baptised March 1822. The 1850 US census lists a Mary, aged 28, born in Ireland. Perhaps this daughter was Mary Anne, initially called Anne and later referred to as Mary?? Alternatively, there may have been two different daughters, Anne and Mary? In any event, Mary is not with the family in 1860 and we have have no further information on her.

Martha Haggertie

F, #1804, d. 29 October 1862

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: County Cork, Ireland
  • Christening: 9 October 1826; Ballygurteen, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 29 October 1862; Canada West
  • Burial: Belleville, Ontario
  • Note: Baptism record in Kilmeen Parish register. Martha was 23 years old and said to have been born in Canada in 1850 PA Census. She evidently returned to Ontario and married John Stout after 1850. In 1861 Mr. and Mrs. John Stout (i.e., Martha) were baptismal sponsors for Adam Haggerty, son of John and Elizabeth Haggerty in Hastings County, Ontario. 1861 census for Belleville shows John, Carter, age 29; Martha 28, John 2 born Canada West and unnamed premature male infant died day of birth--this is odd, as in 1871 there was a son Robert aged 10? The family was living in a one-story frame house.
  • Note: John Stout; Martha was unmarried and living with her parents on the 1850 census, Sandy Creek Tp, Mercer County PA.

Family: John Stout (b. about 1829, d. 27 February 1900)

Elizabeth Haggertie

F, #1805, b. about 1831, d. 2 November 1899

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1831; Upper Canada
  • Death: 2 November 1899; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: Elizabeth was said to be 20 years old at the time of the 1850 census. The 1850, 1870 and 1880 censuses indicate she was born in Pennsylvania. In 1880 she was said to be 49 years old.
In 1861 Elizabeth and John lived with his parents, James and Anne, in Hastings County, Canada West (Ontario). FHH indicated that Elizabeth was the eighth child of George and Mary, but she appears to have had incomplete information. Florence's notes on these families have not survived.

George Webb

M, #1806, b. about 1784, d. January 1845

Biography

  • Birth: About 1784; Ireland
  • Death: January 1845; Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: The George Webb family was in Lackawannock tp in 1830 and Coolspring Tp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in the 1840 Census where they were close neighbours of the James Boyd family (Mrs. Jane Boyd was a sister of Amelia Webb). Unfortunately, these censuses only name the head of the household. Other residents are indicated only by gender and age category (<5 years(1830/1840): 1M, 1F/0 ; 5 - <10 years: 0M, 3F/1M, 1F; 10 - <15 years: 0M, 2F/1M, 2F; 15 - <20 years: 2M, 0F/0M, 2F; 20 - <30 years: 0/0). George Webb, the head of this household was in his 40s in 1830 and his 50s in 1840; his un-named wife is said to be in her 30s in 1830 and 50s in 1840. They had two sons and five daughters in the household. Four young adult Webbs were living together in 1850 after the deaths of their parents.
Naturalization records indicate George was born County Cork, immigrated from Cove of Cork April 1822 and arrived Black Rock, NY July 1822, aged about 38; two sons under 20:Thomas Webb and John Webb. Thomas and John would be the two sons who were aged 15 to 20 in the 1830 census. Both had left home by 1840.
George's will lists his wife as Annie and names two youngest sons, James and George, daughter Jean (probably also known as Jane). Other children named are: John, Mary Nelson, Elizabeth McLain, Nancy, Sarah, Amelia and Susanna. Executors were Annie Webb and Dr. James Magoffin; Witnesses John Findley and Joseph Alexander. (Will Book 2, p. 485, File #3910 OS, written 10 Jan 1845, letters granted 20 Jan 1845).
  • Note: Amelia (Amy) Haggertie; George was a resident of Milane and Amelia of Kildee, Kilmeen parish at the time of their marriage.

Family: Amelia (Amy) Haggertie (b. 1 June 1787, d. January 1847)

George Forbes

M, #1807, b. about 1783, d. 2 June 1848

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1783; Ireland
  • Death: 2 June 1848; Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: I believe the George Forbes who lived in Clodagh, County Cork to be this man:
George Forbes, born in County Cork and a British subject, emigrated from "the Cove of Cork in April 1821 to Cleveland, OH in July 1821, age 38." George declared his intent to become a citizen 18 November 1828, and was naturalized 12 August 1836, witnessed by William Turner. George indicated he had three sons when he arrived in Ohio: Thomas, 12; George, 8; and Richard, 2 months (Mercer County Archives, Vol. 2, Naturalizations, compiled by Mark S. Painter). As was typical of the time when women didn't count as persons, his wife and daughters were not mentioned.
The 1840 census indicates the family consisted of: one male and one female aged 15-20; and one male and one female aged 50-60. The other children appear to have left home by then.

Family: Sarah (Sally) Haggertie (b. 1 January 1781, d. 9 September 1873)

George Forbes

M, #1808, b. about 1813, d. 4 October 1887

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1813; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 4 October 1887; Sandy Lake Twp, Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Note: According to FHH, George Forbes had two sons, Dick and George. The naturalization record names an additional son, Thomas. Dick was reported to have had two sons, and George a large family. Assuming this George was indeed the son of George and Sarah, and that the naturalization record cited for George Sr. is correct, then George Jr. must have been born in approximately 1813, so there are some facts that seem inconsistent. However, for the time being, I am assuming this is indeed George Jr. In 1850 George Jr. had five children and his farm in Mill Creek Twp., Mercer County was valued at $2000. On the transcript of the 1870 Sandy Lake Twp. census George's age is given as 63 years. George was a farmer with real estate assets of $6000 and other property worth $2000. In 1880 he was said to be 73 and was listed as a boarder in the household of his daughter Margaret Lusher.
  • Note: Mary Clark, (Molly, Polly), Married with no children in 1840 census.

Family: Mary Clark, (Molly, Polly), (b. 3 February 1815, d. before 1880)

Richard A. Forbes

M, #1809, b. March 1820, d. 20 September 1912

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: March 1820; Ireland
  • Christening: 28 January 1821; Drimoleague Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 20 September 1912; Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Boyd Cemetery, Mercer County, PA
  • Divorce: Hannah T. Goswell
  • Note: Richard lived with his mother in 1850. There was a Richard Forbes in Mill Creek Tp. in 1860 (index only). Not proven that the Richard in 1870 Census, New Vernon Twp. (age 49) is son of George and Sarah, but considered highly likely. Farm valued at $8000 in 1870. In 1900 Richard is said to have been born in March 1820 in Ireland. He indicated there that he had immigrated in 1820, although that should have been 1821. In the 1910 census Richard, Miranda T. and sons William and Harry L. were still living in New Vernon tp.
From "The History of Mercer County", 1888, pp. 1111 - 1112.
RICHARD FORBES, farmer, post-office Sandy Lake, was born March 1, 1821, in County Cork, Ireland, to George and Sarah (Haggertie) Forbes, natives of the same county, and who immigrated to this county in 1821. They settled first in what is Wilmington Township, and later in Hickory, about three miles from Sharon, where they lived until about 1827, when they moved to the farm where our subject now lives. Here the father bought 400 acres, and here he died in 1847. His widow died September 9, 1873, and had blessed her husband with eight children: Ellen, married John McBride; Thomas; Mary, married John Slater; George; Alice, married Thomas Sweesy; Elizabeth, married William Sweesy; Richard; Jane, married John Burrows; all are dead but Elizabeth and Richard. The parents were members of the Boyd Church, and are buried in the Presbyterian church-yard at Sandy Lake. Our subject was educated in the common schools, and has always been a tiller of the soil. He was married to Hannah Goswell, who died, leaving no issue. He was again married to Maranda Lusher, born December 17, 1842, daughter of Jonathan and Eliza (Smith) Lusher, natives of this State. Her father was an early settler of Venango County. He had twelve children: Jacob, Sarah, John, Martha, Harry, Catharine, Maranda, Lizzie, Peter, Almira, Miles and David. Mr. and Mrs. Forbes have two children: Willie and Harry. When the family settled on this farm it was all in the woods, except a small patch where stood a cabin, on the site of which is an old mill. Wild animals were plenty, and our subject has killed many rattlesnakes. He is the possessor of 280 acres of the best of land, and has recently erected a fine brick building at a cost of over $3,000. He has always been a stanch Democrat, and read the Western Press while William S. Garvin was editor of that paper. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he is one of the enterprising farmers of the township.
