Hannah (Anne) Hales

F, #1352, b. about 1785, d. November 1815

Parents

  • Father: Hales (b. about 1765)

Biography

  • Birth: About 1785; Ireland
  • Death: November 1815; County Cork
  • Burial: 15 November 1815; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork
  • Note: Hannah's sons' baptismal sponsors included Thomas, Richard and Nicholas Hales--these men may have been her brothers or one a father? Hannah was buried in Ballymodan Parish, whose register indicates she was the wife of Thomas and a resident of Kilbrittain. This suggests that Ballymodan may have been her home parish prior to her marriage. Ballymodan parish includes the town of Bandon south of the Bandon River.

Jane Janet Smith

F, #1353, b. about 1825, d. 17 December 1896

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1825; Upper Canada (Ontario)
  • Death: 17 December 1896; Clarke Tp, Durham County, Ontario
  • Burial: Smith family cemetery, Clarke Tp.
  • Divorce: John Haggerty
  • Note: Marriage record for daughter Adeline gives her name as Janet--recently found a few more instances of that as well.
According to the Hastings County Marriage Register, Jane was 38 years old at the time of her marriage to John Haggerty in 1864. In 1861 she was enumerated with a Purdy family in Clarke Twp, Durham County (district 4, p. 74). Her residence was said to be Rawdon Twp. and her age was given as 39. The announcement for her funeral indicated she was 76 in 1896, whereas the death registration lists her as being 80 at the time of her death--this latter was probably an estimate by the physician who registered her death. At the time she was listed as being a widow, which was not correct. Perhap Jane and John were not in contact following their separation?
Jane and John evidently separated while Jane was pregnant with her daughter who was born in August, 1865. In 1942 FHH indicated that Jane and her daughter Margaret moved to the USA. Florence's later notes indicate that Margaret married a man named "Panshaw" and had three children: Mabel (born 1886), Howard and Blanche. According to the US census, Margaret came to the USA and to Illinois in either 1873 (1920 census) or in 1876 (1930 census). I had not been able to find either Jane or her daughter in any census before 1920, but Doug Smith has recently been on the trail with great results. In 1880 Jane "Haggaty" 61 and her daughter "Margaretha" 14 are in Chicago; Jane is "Keeping House" and Margaretha works in a cigar factory. Jane was listed as the attendant at the birth of her daughter, Susan McCormick's twins in Chicago, in 1886. Chicago city directories show the following for Jane (thanks Doug!):
    1870 to 1878 - not listed
1879 – Haggerty, Jane Mrs. house rear 340 Hurlbut
    1880 – Haggerty, Jane Mrs. house 56, 80 Menominee
1881 – Haggerty, Margaret, wid. John, h. 80 Menominee (interesting - enumerator probably got names of mother and daughter mixed up)
1882 – Haggerty, Jane, wid. John, house 712 Larrabee
    1883 – Haggerty, Jane, wid. John, house 282 Bur?ing
    1884 – no
1885 - no Jane, but Margaret, at 2933 Archer
1886 – Haggerty, Jane, wid. John, house 977 N. Clark

The next record was the death registration, any record of Jane after Margaret's baptism in 1866. However, as Margaret was evidently still a child when she emigrated to the USA, it would seem that Jane must have accompanied her.
Daughter Margaret's death certificate indicated that the name of her mother was unknown, suggesting Jane had become estranged from her daughter.
The OGSPI website notes that in 1861 Jane was enumerated at the home of a Purdy family, but was listed as a resident of Rawdon tp (see http://www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/6eh/c6hag001.htm#haggerty):

    39 PURDY Henam m 10 Ont Baptist
    40 PURDY Ira m 6 Ont Baptist
41 DAFOE Jane f 39 Ont EMeth widow? residence Twp. Rawdon
Additional information from Clarke researcher Ruth Waite on Jane:
"We believe that Jane was the widow of Joseph DAFOE at this point in time [i.e., 1861] but it was not noted by the enumerator. I can make no connection as to why she was with the PURDY family. Jane DAFOE married John HAGGERTY 29 May 1864 both of whom were listed as widowed. Jane had a child by him but she left John, went to Chicago area in 1876 with dtr. Margaret Ann HAGGERTY. At some point Jane returned to Clarke where she died December 27 1896 at the home of her nephew Elias George SMITH.
"This entry for Jane in 1861 Clarke census is the only place that any of us, including Sharon Haggerty of London Ontario, has been able to find. She was very elusive. Sharon even searched American census records."
  • Note: John Haggerty; This marriage ended in divorce after one year.

James Haggerty

M, #1354, b. about 1808, d. 21 June 1880

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1808; County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 2 August 1834; Mary Haggerty; St Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Marriage: After 1865; Elizabeth
  • Death: 21 June 1880; Rawdon tp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: 8th Line Cem, Rawdon Twp, Hastings County
  • Note: James is on the 1834 Militia List in Hungerford Twp., 26 years old and a resident of Lot 3, 5th concession.
In 1861 James and Mary (ages 50 and 45) lived on Lot 1 of the 7th Concession in Rawdon Twp, with their daughters Elizabeth and Mary Ann. The 1871 Census for Rawdon Twp lists James and Elizabeth Haggerty (aged 61 and 62), suggesting that James may have remarried after Mary died. I have no idea who this woman could have been and have been unable to find a record of a marriage. In 1871 James still owned and lived on Lot 1 of the 7th Concession (150 acres).
James' precise year of birth is uncertain. A tombstone in the St Thomas Cemetery (8th line) indicates he was born in 1806 and his age on the death registration was 74. However, the Militia list has him as 26 in 1834, suggesting he was born about 1808. His age on the 1861 census was 50; it was 61 in 1871. James' parents, Jonathan Haggerty and Sarah Morley, married in Ireland in 1809.
Ontario death registration #35784, Rawdon tp: image is very, very poor; cause of death not legible. James drew up a will June 15th 1880, 6 days before he died. He left his land (SE quarter of Lot 1, Rawdon) for the use and benefit of his daughter Elizabeth Tanner during her lifetime, and then to her son William Tanner, subject to him paying his sisters $300. each. Elizabeth's youngest child, son Thomas, had not yet been born. James signed the will with his mark. One of the witnesses was Jas. Haggerty Jr. (must have been his cousin, son of James Haggerty and Anne Morley).
  • Note: Mary Haggerty; Names of both were spelled "Haggertie" in the record.

Family 1: Mary Haggerty (b. about 1815, d. 29 July 1865)

Family 2: Elizabeth (b. about 1808)

Elizabeth (Eliza) Bateman

F, #1355, b. about 1823, d. 11 December 1896

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1823; Ireland
  • Death: 11 December 1896; Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: 13 December 1896; St. Thomas Cemetery, Rawdon tp, Hastings county
  • Note: Mattie McCurdy, a descendent of Eliza's brother, William Bateman, told me that her grandmother had told her about Eliza: that she had no children but had raised her niece, "Jane Brown" (Jenny Haggerty) and that Eliza smoked a corn cob pipe.
A Haggerty family history written by Florence Huff Haggerty in about 1940 noted the following about this couple:
"William Haggerty and Elizabeth Bateman had no family of their own. But they raised several, and as I can judge from reports made their home the home of many. They must have been a very happy couple, and their home a happy one, for three pairs of the children that they raised married when they grew up. These are William's nephew, William [Haggerty] and Elizabeth's niece, [Sarah] Jane Brown; Charles Sweet and his first wife Elizabeth Young; Tom Scuese [Skuse] and Susan Ingram. His homestead was Lot 2 Con. 7, Rawden tp., Co. Hastings." Elizabeth Brown, sister of Sarah Jane, and Isaac Ingram, brother of Susan, were also raised by William and Eliza.
Parish burial record gives Eliza's age as 74 and notes that she was born in Ireland. Ontario death reg'n #11130 says she was 72, born Ireland, resident of Lot 2, 10th concession; cause of death asthma of 7 months duration; informant was Edward Bateman. Tombstone gives death date of 1897.
  • Note: William Haggerty; William was from Rawdon; Eliza from Belleville. Witnesses were William Bateman and George Haggerty (brother). Alternate date is 9 Nov 1841

them appear to have been nieces or nephews. I have several letters written by Sarah Jane (signed Jenny) to her sister-in-law, Jane Haggerty, in 1931 and 1932.
Death registration #17899: cause of death chronic myocarditis

Reta Haggerty left notes on the Hinds family, in which Mary's name is recorded as "Mary Ellen Hinds Haggerty Satterlee." Mary divorced Tom and then remarried. Following the divorce Tom returned to Saskatchewan.
Mary was the daughter of William Hinds (son of John and Mary Hinds) and Margaret Henderson, who on April 6, 1858 had been married 18 years. Margaret died April 5, 1876 and William on Jan. 17, 1942 (aged 73 years).

Charles William Panschow

M, #1363, b. 5 September 1862, d. 2 December 1933

Biography

  • Birth: 5 September 1862; Germany
  • Death: 2 December 1933; Chicago, Illinois
  • Burial: Montrose Cemetery, Chicago
  • Note: In 1886 when eldest daughter was born Charles is said to be a Plasterer, residence was 657 Lincoln Avenue, Lake View. Ancestry.com has the Chicago Voter Registration Records for 1888, 1890 and 1892. In 1888 Charles Panschow, born Germany, lived at 191 Webster or Wekter Avenue. He had been a resident of the 4th precinct for 1 year, and a resident of Cook County and Illinois for 26 years. He was a naturalized citizen who registered to vote 9 October, 1888 and cast ballot #75 in the 1888 election. Charles is also listed in the 1892 Voter Registrations. He registered 25 Oct 1892, at which time he had been a resident of the 11th precinct, ward 25, 4th Congressional District at 1231 Belmont Avenue for 4 months, the same address as that noted on the birth registration for daughter Blanche (which lists his name as Christian Panshaw). He had been a resident of Cook County for 29 years and cast a ballot in the 1892 election. The record also indicated that the "Date of Papers" was 31 October 1884, Superior Court of Cook County.
The 1910 census indicates that Charles was 47 and he and Margaret had been married for 25 years. They were one of three families living at 1232 Belmont Avenue in Chicago. Charles was a packer for a wholesale drug company. He had arrived in the USA in 1863, apparently as an infant. I am so far unable to find the family in the 1900 census.
In 1920 they lived on Warner Ave., with Mabel, her husband and daughter.
The 1930 USA census indicates that Charles was then 67 years old and lived in a Chicago home valued at $7500. The family had a radio. He is said to have immigrated in 1862 (but that doesn't fit his age, which suggests he must have been born a year earlier). Both of his parents were born in Germany. His occupation is "Packer" and he had worked in a "Jewelry Dep." He had not been to work the working day immediately preceding the census day. He was not a war veteran.
Charles' death certificate (Illinois certificate # 6031615) indicates that he died of a coronary occlusion. He was a "Jewelry Packer" in an unnamed department store and had worked at that occupation for 33 years, ending October 1933. He was 71 years, 1 month and 27 days old at the time of his death and had resided at 5211 Warner Avenue, Chicago. Details of his birthplace or parents were unknown. Charles had been a resident of Chicago for 50 years. The informant was Howard E. Panschow of 4821 No. Kildare Ave., Chicago.
  • Note: Margaret Ann (Maggie) Haggerty; I believe this marriage record is for our Margaret Haggerty, daughter of John Haggerty and Jane Smith. 1930 census indicates that Charles married at 22 and Margaret at 19.

Jane Haggertie

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 26 January 1778; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 15 July 1862; Pennsylvania
  • Note: Jane married James Boyd in 1800. Their marriage is listed in MLB for the Diocese of Cork and Ross. The baptism of their daughter, Dorothea, on 18 February 1816 is recorded in the Kilmeen Parish Register. No other records for this family were found in the Kilmeen Register.
For some time I unable to find any further information on the Boyd family. I then found them in the 1850 USA census in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In the 1850 Census for Sandy Creek township, were James and Jane Boyd, aged 68 and 69 respectively, both born in Ireland. Adjacent farms have Joe Boyd, James H. Boyd, Robert Boyd and Thomas Boyd. Descendants have confirmed that Jane's maiden name was Haggerty and provided the dates of Jane and James deaths. I have not found any record of their burial, but a number of stones in the Boyd Cemetery are damaged and illegible, and I believe they must have been buried there. One descendant had Jane's birth date recorded as 1 June 1777, however I think it likely that the record brought from Ireland by her brother James is more accurate. In 1860 Jane was said to be 83 years old.

In 1911 birth years for both Nellie and James were 1878, but James known to be born 1876, and both were 23 when they married in 1899. So Nellie was probably born in 1876.
