Mary Haggerty

F, #107, b. about 1815, d. 29 July 1865

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1815; County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 2 August 1834; James Haggerty; St Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Death: 29 July 1865; Rawdon Twp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: 31 July 1865; St Thomas Cem, Belleville, Ontario
  • Note: Mary married her first cousin, James, son of Jonathan Haggerty and Sara Morley. Jonathan was the 13th child and younger brother of Mary's father, and was born in Ireland on December 12, 1783. In the 1861 census Mary is said to be 45, but the ages shown appear to have been rounded off. I haven't found a baptism record for Mary, although I did find baptisms for her three known brothers. Her tombstone:
    "Mary wife of / JAMES HAGGERTY / and daughter of / WILLIAM HAGGERTY / DIED / July 29, 1865 / AGED 50 Yrs 7 Mo's"
    Find a grave:

James and William Haggerty (probably her husband and brother respectively) were present at Mary's burial, according to the parish records for St. Thomas Church, Belleville, Ontario. Family legend is that she was buried with her father.
I was given a small Bible by CB, a descendant of Mary's. In the front of the Bible it says:
    "The Association Incorporated
    for Discountenancing Vice and
    Promoting the Knowledge & Practice
    of the
    Christian Religion
    Adjudged this Premium to
Mary Hagerty (this name hand written on a blank line, in beautiful script)
For superior Merit at an Examination
in the Principles of the Christian Religion
& the Knowledge of the Gospel held in
Kilmeen Church (also handwritten on a blank line)
On the 8th day of October 1830
By the Rev'd George Bellett, Examr"
(The date and the name of Rev'd Bellett are also handwritten.)
I did find records for Rev. Bellett. He was born in Dublin, entered TCD 3 July 1815, age 17, son of John Bellett, Generosus. He completed a BA in 1820 and an MA in 1832. On 6 September 1832 he married Elizabeth Denny, born Tralee, county Kerry, abt 1806, in Somerset England. Baptism and census records indicate the children were born in Shropshire, England. It appears this family did not return to Ireland before George died in 1886. NOTE, this does seem to support the apparent record that Mary was still in Ireland in October 1830, and that is a dilemma!
  • Note: James Haggerty; Names of both were spelled "Haggertie" in the record.

James Haggerty

M, #109, b. 27 October 1837, d. 31 March 1913

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 27 October 1837; Hastings County, Upper Canada (Ontario)
  • Marriage: 6 November 1863; Elizabeth Haggerty; St Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Death: 31 March 1913; Melbourne, Middlesex County, Ontario
  • Burial: Longwoods Cem, Melbourne, Ontario
  • Note: James and Elizabeth moved from Huntington Twp, Hastings Co. to Caradoc Twp, Middlesex Co in 1868, bringing James' brother Tom (b 1860) and sister Jane (b. 1857) with them (their mother had died in 1863). Jane and their father John, went to live with George and Martha after their marriage in 1869. (FHH) Tom is not listed with either family in 1881.
In 1891 the family is recorded as "Hagart", and the names and ages are: James 50, Elizabeth 30, Harriet 21, William J. 20, George 18, Jane 15, Jame 13, Andrew 11, Ames 4.
According to the family bible which was in the possession of Maggie Haggerty Fisher (James and Elizabeth's eldest daughter) and transcribed by FHH in 1937, James was born October 27, 1837. According to his tombstone he died 31 March 1913, at the age of 75 years, 5 months, 26 days, which would place his date of birth as 5 October 1837, the birth date listed on the death registration (#39973); October 27 is probably correct. However, the 1901 Census for Caradoc Twp. gives his birthdate as 1 March 1834; in 1911 he is said to have been born October 1835. Cause of death was pneumonia. Death registration incorrectly gives his father's name as James and name is listed as "Haggarty." Death was reported by his son Andrew.
Lived Lot 6, Range 1S, Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario.

George Haggerty

M, #110, d. 21 October 1849

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: County Cork, Ireland
  • Christening: 15 May 1819; Maulitanvally, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 21 October 1849; Rawdon Twp, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Burial: St Thomas Cem, Belleville, Ontario
  • Note: FHH book indicates (p. 41):
"George Haggerty (4) was a cooper by trade and worked at it in the long winter months, when not busy at farm work. They lived for a while after he was married in Hastings Co., then moved to Middlesex Co., Ont. He died there. After his death, Elizabeth Morgan (4), his wife, married John Bateman, and moved to Lincoln, Ill., U.S.A."
George was said to have been born in Ireland in 1820, according to FHH; however, the Kilmeen parish register gives his baptism date as May 15, 1819. His mother, Elizabeth Beamish, died when he was born. There is a charming story, also told by FHH, about Elizabeth's ghost returning each evening to tuck her infant son into bed. Elizabeth's second husband, John Bateman, was also baptised at Kilmeen parish in County Cork Ireland.
FHH was mistaken about this couple moving to Middlesex County. George Haggerty, a resident of Rawdon, is buried at St. Thomas Churchyard Cemetery. The records indicate he died either October 21 (Mattie McCurdy) or 23 (Diocese records from Lisa Russell), 1849, aged 25 years. This age is incorrect. According to the Kilmeen baptism record, George was actually 30 years old when he died. I have not found any record of the cause of death. According to the parish burial records, William Morgan, probably a brother-in-law, and Marmaduke Haggerty, a cousin were present at the burial. George's will, dated 23 April 1849, is available in microform at the Ontario Archives. The fact that he drew up a will six months before he died suggests he knew he was fatally ill as it would have been very unusual for a man so young to have a will otherwise. Thus, he probably died from an illness or disease, rather than accidently, but who knows?

John Thomas Bateman

M, #115, b. September 1813, d. 11 January 1896

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: September 1813; County Cork, Ireland
  • Christening: 21 November 1813; Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Marriage: 25 August 1836; Mary Bateman; Bathurst, New Brunswick
  • Death: 11 January 1896; Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario
  • Burial: Christ Church Yd, Delaware, Ontario
  • Note: It is very likely that John Bateman, son of Thomas and Hannah, baptised in Rathclaren parish, County Cork is this John. The baptism sponsors were Thomas Hales (brother or father of Hannah?) and Richard and Eliza Bradfield. Family stories were that John came from Ballydehob, but I think his origins must have been in Rathclaren.
John and Mary apparently came to Canada West in about 1846. In January 1852 (1851 census) they were living in a one story log house on Lot 8, 5th concession of Caradoc tp.
Christ Church parish register (Delaware) has date of death 11 January 1896; death reg'n #11706-1896 says 12 January 1896: age 81 yrs, 4 mos; born Ireland; cause of death "fracture neck of femur & hypostatic congestion of lungs 4 days"; informant T. McDonald, Burwell Rd [his son-in-law].
From 1936 until 1941 annual reunions of descendants of John and Mary Bateman were held in or near London, Ontario. Records of those reunions were maintained and saved and I was able to track them down in the 1990s.

William Haggerty

M, #116, d. 17 April 1895

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Kildee, Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Christening: 28 April 1816; Kilmeen Parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: 17 April 1895; Ivanhoe, Ontario, Canada
  • Burial: St. Thomas Cemetery, Rawdon tp, Hastings county
  • Note: William's baptism date is taken from the Kilmeen parish register, and is the year before the birth date recorded by FHH. This is the case for several of the birth/baptism dates of those who were baptised in Kilmeen.
William and Eliza had no children of their own, but raised several, all or most of them nieces or nephews. FHH notes (Haggerty, 1942, p. 40): "as I can judge from reports [they] made their home the home of many. They must have been a very happy couple, and their home a happy one, for three pairs of the children that they raised married when they grew up. These are William's nephew, William (11) and Elizabeth's niece, Mary Jane Brown (11) [this name is an error--it should be Sarah Jane Brown]; Charles Sweet (474) and his first wife, Elizabeth Young; Tom Scuese and Susan Ingram. His homestead was Lot 2, Con. 7, Rawden Tp., Co. Hastings." I believe they also raised Sarah Jane's sister Elizabeth Brown, and Isaac Ingram, brother of Susan. In the 1881 census Emely Haggerty (8, daughter of William Haggerty and Sarah Jane Brown) and Sarah Bateman (17) were living with William and Eliza.
William fought in the war of 1837/38 and, according to my father, he lost his left arm when a "blunderbus" exploded during the Fenian raids. I suspect that must have been during the 1837 rebellion, rather than the 1866 Fenian raids, which don't seem to have spread to the Hastings county area? William is listed among those on the 1837 Honours Roll still surviving in 1891/92
From correspondence from Martha McCurdy of Belleville, Ontario, March 15, 1996:
Mrs. McCurdy's grandmother was a niece of Eliza Bateman and cousin of Sarah Jane Brown and Elizabeth Brown, both of whom were raised by Eliza and William. Jane and Elizabeth Brown's mother was Susannah Bateman. Susan Ingram was a daughter of Jane Bateman, another sister of Eliza. Susan's brother Isaac also grew up in the Haggerty household. The 1861 census lists the following members in the household: William Haggerty born in Ireland, Eliza his wife born Ireland, Eliza Brown born Canada, Isaac Ingram born Ireland. They lived in a 1 and 1/2 story stone house on land described above. Mrs. McCurdy noted that the house was still standing. Eliza was said to have smoked a corn cob pipe.
The 1861 Hastings County Directory indicated the following for William: "William Haggerty, yeoman, Conc. VII Pt. lot 2, Rawdon."
  • Note: Elizabeth (Eliza) Bateman; William was from Rawdon; Eliza from Belleville. Witnesses were William Bateman and George Haggerty (brother). Alternate date is 9 Nov 1841
