Swanton Sargent Bateman

M, #2110, b. 19 July 1843, d. 14 December 1902

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 19 July 1843; Bathurst, Gloucester Co., New Brunswick
  • Death: 14 December 1902; Gales Creek, Washington County, Oregon, U S A
  • Note: Another source had birth date as 19 June 1843. A Jackson county, Kansas naturalization record for Swanton Bateman, born "New Brunswick, a province of Great Briton" is assumed to be this man. That record indicates that Swanton entered the United States 26 March 1868, aged about 24 years. However, a Swanton Bateman, age 21, born New Brunswick is also found in Franklin tp, Jackson county, Kansas in the 1865 state census. Perhaps he moved to and fro? In 1870 Swanton was living in Claytonville tp, Brown Co., Kansas (P. O. Hiawatha) 8 Aug. 1870: Bateman, S. S., age 26, carpenter, real estate valued at $3000, personal property $300, born Canada, can vote. There is also an immigration record for Swanton S. Bateman in Oregon, in 1888 and 1890. In the 1880 census Swanton was living in Hillsboro Pct, Washington County, Oregon (p. 361A). At that time his occupation was lumber manufacturer.
    From
4772. Early settlers in this part of Jackson county will remember Swanton S. Bateman, who some twenty odd years ago moved to Oregon. The news now comes of his death, which occurred at Gales Creek, in that state on December 14. His widow was formerly Miss Amanda Sargent, whom he married in Holton previous to his moving to Oregon. A local paper gives the following account of his death:
"Another old resident has gone. S. S. Bateman died at his home on Gales Creek Sunday night and was buried in Gales Creek Tuesday. He was 59 years of age and resided at his late home for twenty-three years. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn his loss. The children are Mrs. Nina Iler, Daton, Ore., Mrs. Mamie Anderson, Elma, Wash., and Charles S., Benjamin, Marguerite, Alice and Earl at home ... born in New Brunswick and emigrated to Kansas in 1873 and came to this county in 1878. The Holton Signal, December 31, 1902."

Sarah Ellen Bateman

F, #2118, b. 9 September 1862, d. before 1896

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 9 September 1862; Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West
  • Marriage: 6 February 1890; Albert Bateman; Christ Church Parsonage, Delaware, Middlesex County, Ontario
  • Death: Before 1896
  • Note: Unable to find a death record in either New Brunswick or Ontario, but assume Sarah must have died before Albert remarried.
  • Note: Albert Bateman; Parish register described Albert as a farmer of Big River, Bathurst, New Brunswick and son of John S. and Ellen Bateman. I have been unable to find a record of this marriage in the Ontario Vital Records, although Sarah's siblings' marriages were registered. Perhaps they decided it was not necessary as Albert and Sarah did not plan to live in Ontario. Marriage record from church registers.

Mary Hawkins

F, #2120, b. about 1800

Biography

  • Birth: About 1800
  • Marriage: 28 February 1828; John Hagertie; Kilmeen parish, County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: John and Mary Hagertie of Garough had a son George baptised 22 Feb. 1829 at Kilmeen. In 1860 George Hegarty witnessed the marriage of Susan Hawkins of Gearah, Kilmeen to Samuel Bateman of Clouncorban. They were married in Ballymoney parish. I think it likely that both of these records refer to the same George Hagertie.
  • Note: John Hagertie; John Hagertie, Police Constable of Kanturk, married Mary Hawkins of Garough, Kilmeen. This was probably a different John Hagertie, as it seems unlikely that the John born in 1777 wouldn't have married and started a family until 1828. He may have been the next generation? Or it may be that Mary was a resident of Kilmeen and John was not?
