Elizabeth Haggerty

F, #415, b. 22 March 1840, d. 21 September 1926

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 22 March 1840; Hastings County, Upper Canada (Ontario)
  • Christening: 20 April 1840; St Thomas Church, Belleville, Upper Canada
  • Marriage: 15 April 1858; William W. Wickens; St Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Hastings County
  • Death: 21 September 1926; Dresden, Ontario
  • Burial: 23 September 1926; United Church Cemetery, Dresden, Ontario
  • Note: At time of her death in 1926, Elizabeth Wickens was said to be 86 years, 6 months. A baptism record at St. Thomas Church, Belleville, indicates Elizabeth Haggerty, daughter of John and Margaret Haggerty was born 22 March, 1840 and baptised 20 April 1840. The church records also indicate that the Elizabeth born on that date died in May 1840. I think that this Elizabeth, later Elizabeth Wickens, may have been born a year or so later, after the first Elizabeth died in 1840.
At the time of the 1901 census, Elizabeth was living with her son John and daughter Harriet in the town of Wallaceburg. Her birth date was recorded as 22 March, 1840--very confusing. In 1911 she is listed with her son John and daughter Hattie in MacLeod, Alberta.

William Haggerty

M, #423, b. 27 October 1851, d. 19 April 1938

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 27 October 1851; Ivanhoe, Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Christening: 21 December 1851; Stirling Parish, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Death: 19 April 1938; Huntingdon Twp, Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Burial: 21 April 1938; St Thomas Cem, Rawdon Twp, Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Note: The family Bible, then in the possession of Maggie Haggerty Fisher, was transcribed by Florence Haggerty and gave a birth date of 27 October, 1851, and this is also the birth date William gave for the 1901 Census. However, the baptism record indicates William was born 20 August 1850, and sponsored by William Hagerty, Eliza Hagerty and Thomas Beamish.
The marriage registration recorded his name as "William Hagerty Jr."
The 1901 Census indicates that William was farming and lived in Lot 15, 1st Concession, Rawdon, with his wife and three youngest daughters. His older children were then living on the original farm, Lot 2 on the 7th.
The Stirling parish record indicates William was buried 4 June 1938, at the age of 86. William's obituary in Florence Haggerty's scrapbook indicates he farmed in southern Rawdon Twp until 25 years before his death, at which time he moved to Stirling.
  • Note: Sarah Jane (Jane) Brown; Both were residents of Rawdon, and had lived much of their lives with Will's uncle and Jenny's aunt, William Haggerty and his wife, Eliza Bateman. Witnesses at their marriage were William Thomas Brown of Rawdon and Andrew Fleming of Huntingdon, per Ontario marriage reg'n (or Willet Brown and Annie Fleming according to transcript of Diocese record). Emily Susannah Haggerty

F, #425, b. 31 July 1872, d. 1 December 1885

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 31 July 1872; Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Christening: 22 September 1872; Stirling Parish, Hastings County, Ontario
  • Death: 1 December 1885; Ivanhoe, Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Burial: St Thomas Cem, Rawdon Twp, Hastings Co, Ontario
  • Note: Baptism record gives birth date as 30 July; baptism sponsors were parents--lived in Rawdon Twp.
According to the cemetery transcript, her marker reads: "Emily Susannah [as does Haggerty book] d Dec. 1, 1856, daughter of William and Sarah Ann" (?). The year is clearly not correct, and hence the transcriber must have misread the date. The cemetery record says: "Jennie Susannah died Dec 11, 1885," according to Mattie McCurdy. FHH recorded the cemetery stone as reading "Emily Susanna." This girl was one of three children in the family who died of scarlet fever within a few weeks of one another.
In the 1881 census she is recorded as living with her great uncle and aunt, William Haggerty and Eliza Bateman (who also raised her parents). There is a photo in the 1942 Haggerty book of this child with William and Eliza.
