Robert Bateman

M, #4206, b. about 1815, d. before 1900

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1815; Ireland
  • Death: Before 1900
  • Note: In 1840 there are two Bateman households in Coshocton County, Ohio: one is headed by Charles, the other by Robert. In Robert's household there is one boy under 5 years of age, men in their 20s and 70s, and women in their 20s and 70s. It is likely that Matthew and Sarah were the couple who were in their 70s, and Robert and his wife in their 20s.
The age of the Robert Bateman buried in the Bateman cemetery suggests that he must be the son of Matthew and Sarah. Placement not proven.

Isaac Heaton

M, #4207, b. about 1792, d. before 1900

Biography

  • Birth: About 1792; Pennsylvania
  • Death: Before 1900
  • Note: Isaac is said to have been the son of Isaac Heaton and Mary Booth, both born abt 1770. Isaac Jr was born in PA and the family moved to Ohio in 1817. Although they appear in different places in different censuses, I think it likely these are a reflection of changing boundaries, rather than the family moving around in Ohio. The Ancestry.com Ohio census records for Isaac Heaton in Coshocton County seem to begin with Isaac Sr as the head of the household. The male over 70 in 1830 would have been born before 1760 and was probably Isaac Sr.:
    1820 (Perry Tp, Coshocton County): 3 males, age categories: 1 <10; 1 26-44; 1 over 44; 2 females, 1 16-25; 1
    1830 (Howland tp, Trumball County): 2 males, 1 aged 5-10; 1 in his 60s; 3 females, 1 30s, 1 40s, 1 70s
1840 (Trumball county, township not identified) - there are two households:
    (a) <5 1 male; 10 - 15 yrs 1 male, 1 female; 20s 2 males, 1 female; 30s 2 males, 1 female; 40s 1 male, 50s 2 males;
    (b) <5 1 male, 1 female; 20s 1 male, 1 female ( seems likely this Isaac would be a son of Isaac and Martha?)
1850 (Bedford Tp): Isaac, 56, born PA, farmer; Ann 24; Aaron 32; Joseph 26; Alexander 21; Elizabeth 18; Rachel 15 (all but Isaac born OH, but who is Ann?)
1860 (Jefferson tp): Isaac, 65, born PA, farmer; Martha 5?, born Ireland; [illegible] born OH
1870 (Newcastle tp): Isaac, 78, born PA, retired farmer; Martha 73, born Ireland--both in household of Elizabeth and John Padgett.
1880: Isaac, 87, born PA, parents born NJ, retired, again living with his daughter and son-in-law, the Padgetts, now in Grant tp, Vermilion county, Illinois.

William Swanton Bateman

M, #4210, b. 9 April 1842, d. 28 November 1923

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 9 April 1842; Gloucester County, New Brunswick
  • Death: 28 November 1923; Bathurst, New Brunswick
  • Burial: St Alban's Anglican Cemetery, Bathurst, New Brunswick
  • Note: I originally was given a birth year of 1842 but the following obituary indicates 1840. As his parents married in 1841, I think it likely that 1842 is the correct date. The 1861 census has him aged 19. The exact date of his death is uncertain: the death registration indicates he died 29 November, a family photo taken about the time of his death indicates he died 23 November. In 1901 William was enumerated at Henderson Creek, Yukon and age 61. He had been in the Yukon for 4 years, was a miner and was listed as "owner", presumably the owner of a mine.

BATEMAN; Mr. William died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Milton Doherty on the Points Road on Wednesday afternoon, November/28/1923. He was in failing health and was practically confined to his room for a number of years. A lot of his family lives in the U.S. He was one of the pioneers of Gloucester Co. born on the North side of Big River parish of Bathurst April/9th 1840, the son of John Swanton Bateman of Bathurst and Ellen Jennings of Cork, Ireland. He received his schooling under private tuition. When he was just a boy he engaged in lumbering and helped procure the lumber for many vessels built in Bathurst. The village of Bathurst one hundred families had a shipyard and at the prime of his life he was one of the best judges of standing lumber in N.B. He was also a hunter, and a fisherman. In the early days of the Yukon gold fields he headed a party of eight who made the trip over the (Trail of 98) and spent seven years in the Yukon arriving home in August 1904 and remained at his home the Gould Grant farm on the Points Road. He was twice married, the first wife was Ester Jagoe of New Bandon, his second wife was Grace Benson of Bathurst who died twenty years ago. He leaves his entire family of seven daughters, Mrs. Helen Pickle of Bangor, Maine, Mrs. Emma Smythe of Stuart River, Yukon, Mrs. Ruby E. Morrison of Greenville, Me., Mrs. T. Milton Doherty, Mrs. William Good, Mrs Charles Getty, and Mrs. O. T. Carter all of Bathurst. They were all present at his funeral. Internment was in the St. Alban's Anglican cemetery, which was formerly a part of the Gould Grant farm donated to the Anglican Church Salmon Beach for burial purposes. The service at the graveside was under the Masonic auspices and members of the St. John Lodge. The beautiful Masonic liturgy was read by the Master. The pallbearers were Master W J Kent, Oscar Fenwick, John Miller, Samuel Gammon, Howard Good, and Amos Eddy (unidentified newspaper).
From the record of the Bateman family reunion held near London, Ontario about 1940:
Mrs. Laura Doherty . . . described her father’s first trip to the Klondike over the White Pass on the Trail of 1898 when each person was required to take one ton of provisions and supplies by pack for forty miles from Skagway to Lake Linderman. There were six men in the party which included her father and husband. They crossed Lake Linderman by boat. Her father, Wm. Bateman stayed three and a half years. Came home to Bathurst N.B. for one winter returning to the Yukon for three and a half years. Milton Doherty spent nine months in the Yukon. Her sister Emma married Waldron B. Smythe and she lived at Stuart River for sixteen years conducting a general store, and Post Office. Her husband died in the Yukon and her sister Ruby who had been with her in the Yukon brought his body from Vancouver to Bathurst for burial. Emma Smythe is writing a book on her life in the Yukon and hopes it will soon be published. Mrs. Doherty extended a very gracious invitation to visit them at their home, Gould Grant Farm, Bathurst N.B.
  • Note: Grace Ida Benson; IGI Film #1761089 gives estimated marriage date as 1862 in Bathurst; however, marriage notice in newspaper indicates 1869. Married in Bathurst, 20th inst., by Rev. Frederick Home, William S. BATEMAN / Miss Grace BENSON, both of Bathurst (source: Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 27 Number 817; Rank 64; Date May 27, 1869; County Northumberland; Place Newcastle; Newspaper Union Advocate).
