Dr. John Small

M, #8614, b. about 1764, d. 18 May 1842

Biography

  • Birth: About 1764
  • Marriage: 21 December 1807; Sarah Bath; Church Gresley, Derby, England
  • Death: 18 May 1842; Netherseale, Derby, England
  • Burial: 21 May 1842; Netherseale
  • Note: A John Small, son of Joseph Small, was baptised 23 July 1764 at Ibberton, Dorset, England. His mother's maiden name was Ely. Another John Small, son of Samuel Small, was baptised 12 April 1773 at Bromsgrove, Worcester, England. His mother was Elizabeth.
John was said to be a "surgeon." He died of "Tschuria"? (not clear) aged 71. The informant was Joseph Small, and Registrar was David Berkin, who was also a witness at John and Sarah's marriage. From the Burial register for Netherseal, Seal Parish 1813-1902 (Microfilm from the Derbyshire Record Office/LDS) Historical note : Burial registers became mandatory in 1813. Burials were lumped together with Baptisms and Marriages in a General Register before 1813. The General Register for Netherseal (Seal Parish) begins in 1566 and is in Latin: John Small, Entry 538, Buried May 21, 1842. Age 71. Ceremony performed by W Nigel Gresley. Abode : Nether Seale.
January 14, 2002 Bryan Small reported the following:
I've just started going over the Overseer Accounts for the poor for Netherseal. The first reference to John Small is on April 15, 1797. There is no reference to him before that.
    Sundry Accounts :
"Paid Mr. Small for attending Thomas Dylkis and Hugh Patrick." 6/1/3 (6 pounds, 1 shilling, 3 pence?? Can't be that much can it?)
    The next entry:
SMALL'S WENCH 0/2/6 (That's a weekly poor payment beginning in Easter 1798 and continuing for a year.) So we can now refer to Sarah Bath as SMALL's Wench. The point here, among others, is that where ever John Small came from, he came from there poor. Does this lend credence to the rumour that he was dis-inherited and didn't have a penny to his name when he came to Netherseal?
Over the year of poor payments "SMALL'S WENCH" is shortened to "SML WENCH" and then "S:WENCH". Are they trying to hide something here? So Sarah was paid for the whole year from the Overseer Accounts.
Now it gets real interesting. Starting at Easter (April) 1799, SMALL WENCH payments change to "SMALL's CHILD" and continue for another year. That's as far as I got on the tape. I think this means that Sarah had a child in 1799. The child must have died because we know that John Junior wasn't baptized until 1803. He could have been baptized 3 years later but his death certificate and census ages confirm that his birth was in 1803.
