"In 1859 Sallie went to Dover, Stewart County, Tenessee, on the banks of the Cumberland River, to teach school. On Sept. 29, 1861, she married my wife's grandfather W.R. His father died in the same year before his birth. His mother remarried about 1868. The second husband was Captain George S. Wilson, a Cumberland Riverman. There were three children of this marriage: James b. about 1870 (who died in childhood; and Richard Eddiie Wilson b. Thomas Leroy Forbes

M, #8944, b. June 1857, d. 3 April 1937

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: June 1857; Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Death: 3 April 1937; Mercer County, Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Heywood Cemetery, West Middlesex, Mercer County
  • Note: Thomas was very young when his father died, and evidently his mother had died previously. However, in the 1860 census his father and two sisters were living in Shenango tp. Was his mother still living in 1860, and if so, where was she? Where was Thomas? I cannot find him anywhere in Pennsylvania in 1860. One possible explanation is that he was born about that time and his mother may have gone elsewhere to give birth to her child--possibly at her parents' home?
Thomas' guardians until he came of age were first his uncle Richard Forbes and then Michael C. Trout. Thomas and his wife Frances are in Shenango tp., Mercer county in both 1910 and 1920. In 1930 Thomas was living with his daughter Mayme Shearer in Shenango Tp.
Obituary in the New York Times, 5 April 1937:
"Thomas L. Forbes, father of Russell Forbes, New York City Commissioner of Purchase, died in West Middlesex, PA., on Saturday, after a long illness, at the age of 79. Services will be held today, with burial in the family plot alongside the grave of his wife, who died four years ago. Four other children survive. They are Lloyd of Bend, Ore.; William of Chambersburg, PA.; Miss Florence Forbes of Tampa, Fla.; and Mrs. William Shearer of West Middlesex, with whom Mr. Forbes had been making his home."
