    Frederick "Freddie" A. McComb Jr., 2240 McComb Road, Sandy Lake Township, died unexpectedly at 10:45 p.m. Saturday (9-30-00) at home of natural causes. He was 83. Mr. McComb was born March 4, 1917, in Stoneboro to Dr. Frederick A. McComb Sr. and Susan Boyd McComb. A 1935 alumnus of the former Stoneboro High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1939 from Grove City College and played on the school’s football team. Mr. McComb later attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Philadelphia. In his earlier years, he was a dairy farmer for more than 20 years. For the last 60 years, he was an independent local oil producer. Mr. McComb was a lifetime member of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church. A music lover, he was proficient in playing many instruments, especially the guitar, piano and banjo, and he was active in various local bands. For many years Mr. McComb played with the Rhythm Rangers, performing on radio stations and for group gatherings in the area. He also performed with the Dingbats, a local seniors group; and sang for many years with the Grove City Barbershoppers. He was a 50-year member of Free and Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake; and belonged to Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory. Mr. McComb was one of the founders of the Stoneboro Yacht Club.
    His wife, the former Frances A. Berrisford, whom he married Nov. 5, 1940, died May 5, 1983. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Brian J. (Paula) Raymond; and two sons, Frederick A. III and Richard B., all Stoneboro; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

  • Note: SETH H. SLATER, farmer, post-office Stoneboro, is a son of John and Rebecca (Dickson) Slater. His father was a son of Luke and Alice (Matkins) Slater, was born in England, immigrated to America with his parents in 1829, and settled on a tract of land in Cool Spring Township. After his marriage he located on a tract of land in Lake Township, which is now owned by our subject, where he lived until his death in 1881. His first wife was Mary Forbes, and by her he had Melissa, wife of William Woods, of Kansas; Sarah, deceased; Wilson; Lydia, widow of Alfred Fairlamb; Ellen, wife of W. P. McCartney. His second wife was Rebecca Dickson, who is still living, and by whom he had Sylvester, deceased; Ira, of New Vernon Township; Rebecca, deceased; Amanda C., wife of Cyrus Judy, of Fairview Township; our subject; Alice, Mrs. James Perrine, deceased; Michael, deceased. He was connected with the Republican party. Our subject was born on the homestead which he now owns January 22, 1854, attended the township schools, and has been principally engaged in farming. In 1883 he established a general hardware store at Clark’s Station, which he conducted three years, and since that time has been engaged in the butcher business one year. He is one of the stockholders in the Stoneboro Glass Works, also a member of the K. & L. of H. of New Vernon and of the A. O. U. W. of Clark’s Mills. In 1879 he married Sarah M., daughter of John Hazen, of Sheakleyville, and by this union they have three children: Bessie, John and Hazel.
