Robert Mitchell

  • Burial: Greenfield Cemetery, Arthur, Ontario
  • Note: In 1851 Robert was listed as a Clerk and Agent. He leased a saw mill at that time. His family lived in a log house. Headstone in Cemetery indicates Robert was aged 75 years, 7 months when he died. It also indicates that he and his wife were: "Natives of the Parish of Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland."
    From the "Biographical Sketches" Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario, compiled, drawn and published from personal examinations and surveys. Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co, 1906, reprint 1972 (p. 51): Robert Mitchell came to Canada from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1835 and settled in Fergus. In 1848 he moved to Arthur Township. He was a well educated man and did a great deal of the surveying. He also graveled the Owen Sound Road from Arthur to Mount Forest and was a conveyancer. He was Township clerk and Treasurer of Arthus from 1851 until 1854 and again Clerk from 1855 until 1860. He also served as valuator and helped settle disputes when the townships were divided. Mr. Mitchell was a Conservative in politics and a Presbyterian in religion. He married Margaret Anderson. Mr. Mitchell died in 1882. Mrs. Mitchell died in Pennsylvania some years ago. Issue: John C., Robert, Francis settled in Arthur, Mrs. Smith (d.), Agnes, Manitoba, Mrs. William Scott, Arthur and James, Manitoba.
    The first written record for Arthur tp, dated 21 January 1850, noted that Robert Mitchell was appointed township clerk (http://www.wcm.on.ca/tweedsmuir/pdf/TownshipofWellingtonNorth/ArthurCentennialWI/1/045.pdf). Two pages later in the same document (evidently prepared at the time of the Canadian Centennial in 1967) it was noted that William Mitchell, the reeve in 1967, was a
    Death reg'n #19146: died of what appears to read "Complications of Disorder Dropsy", in village of Arthur, age 75 yrs, 7 mos; occupation Agent; informant was his widow. Robert may have been a brother of Andrew Mitchell (Andrew's wife Barbara was a sister of Margaret Anderson).
  • Note: Margaret Anderson; This marriage is recorded twice--once as taking place in Auchterless and once as Fyvie. Fyvie is the Aberdeen parish that Robert and Margaret were said to be from.

  • Note: William Robinson; William Robinson was from Fergus and Sarah Mitchell was from Arthur. Witnesses were James Anderson and Andrew Mitchell.

John Chalmers Mitchell

Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co, 1906, reprint 1972 (p. 51): John C. Mitchell was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, 1832 and came to Canada and Arthur Township with his parents. He served four years in the first gristmill in Arthur, where he learned the trade. He started for himself in 1859 and took up the present homestead, 140 acres, Lots 27 and 28, Concession 2, Arthur, which was all bush and is now assessed for $9,000, being originally worth $825. Mr. Mitchell has made all of his property by his own exertions without help from others. He has educated his large family, and started them out well fitted to start life's battles. Mr. Mitchell has retired from active work and lives in Arthur in comfortable circumstances and is respected by the entire community. He has been Trustee of the Presbyterian Church for years, and in politics is a Conservative. In 1858, he married Eliza Smith. Issue: Robert J., Arthur; George W., on the homestead; John, N.W.T.; Frank, merchant, in Arthur; Ida S. (d.), Margaret, teacher, in Toronto; Mrs. George Thompson, in Petrolia; Archie (died young); and Alexander (died 29). Of this branch; Robert J. lives upon and owns Lot 25, Concession 1, Arthur Township. He carries on mixed farming and is a successful man and a Presbyterian and a Conservative. He married Mary Thompson. Issue: Archie, Norman, Ida and Neil. George W. lives upon and owns the homestead to which he has added by purchase 50 acres, making it 150 acres in all. He is a successful farmer and feeds cattle for export. In 1904 he married Sophia Shaw. Issue: Wilma J.
    Death reg'n #42237: son of Robert Mitchell and Margaret Anderson, born Scotland; retired farmer; died Lot 1, Charles St, Arthur village, aged 86; cause of death senile decay; informant George W. Mitchell of Arthur.

    "Marriage certificate of John Mitchell and Eliza Smith, Arthur Township, 1858
    "Single-page marriage certificate, hand-written and signed by Presbyterian minister Rev. John McMechan, and dated 11 March 1858, certifying that John Mitchell and Eliza Smith, both of Arthur Township, were married at the Smith residence on Thursday, 11 March 1858. Signed by witnesses Peter Grieve and Edward Ogden.
    "The (Fergus) British Constitution of 19 March 1858 (page 3) published the notice 'Married - on the llth inst., at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. John McMechan, Mr. John Chalmers Mitchell to Eliza, daughter of George Smith, Esq., all of the Township of Arthur.'
    The George Smith farm, where the wedding took place, was located at Lot 34, on the east side of the Owen Shound Road, just north of the Village of Arthur. W.F. MacKenzie's history of Arthur Village states that J.C. Mitchell came to the village of Arthur with his parents in 1848, at the age of 10.' "

He helped his father in the sawmill business, and experienced all the hardships in connection with pioneer life. He owns 150 acres, Lot 32, Owen Sound road, and has been very successful raising and educating a large family, also helping his boys to start in life. He is much respected, a Presbyterian and a Conservative. He married Janet Hunter. Issue: Margaret, George, Manitoba; Robert (d.), Mary, Agnes, in Fergus and William and Frank at home; Arthur, Mount Forest; and Jessie and Ella at home." According to the 1901census Robert came to Canada in 1835.
