Barbara Anderson

F, #9301, d. 12 February 1855

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Scotland
  • Christening: 3 March 1820; Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
  • Death: 12 February 1855; Wellington County, Canada West
  • Burial: St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Fergus
  • Note: Barbara was 36 years old when she died.
  • Note: Andrew Mitchell; Andrew and Barbara apparently married after coming to Canada--Barbara's older sister Margaret married Robert Mitchell in Scotland and in early 1852 the two couples must have been close neighbours as their families are listed on the same page of the census. I am speculating that Andrew and Robert were brothers, but so far that is pure speculation.

Andrew Mitchell

M, #9302, b. about 1805, d. 8 October 1862

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1805; Scotland
  • Death: 8 October 1862; Wellington County, Canada West
  • Burial: St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Fergus
  • Note: In 1851 Andrew Mitchell was proprietor of a Grist and Oat Meal Mill in Fergus, Nichol Tp., which was driven by water power. William Mitchell was living with Andrew and Barbara in a log house; I believe the two men were probably brothers, and think it likely that Robert Mitchell was a third brother (married to Barbara's sister Margaret). Andrew was said to be 57 years and 5 months old at the time of his death. At the time of the 1967 Centennial it was noted that William Mitchell, reeve in 1967, was a descendant of "that pioneer council man Andrew Mitchell" (http://www.wcm.on.ca/tweedsmuir/pdf/TownshipofWellingtonNorth/ArthurCentennialWI/1/047.pdf).
  • Note: Barbara Anderson; Andrew and Barbara apparently married after coming to Canada--Barbara's older sister Margaret married Robert Mitchell in Scotland and in early 1852 the two couples must have been close neighbours as their families are listed on the same page of the census. I am speculating that Andrew and Robert were brothers, but so far that is pure speculation.

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1842; Canada West
  • Note: James was living with John and Margaret (his sister) Small in Peel Tp. in 1871. His occupation was listed as blacksmith. The only James Mitchell who was a blacksmith and living in Ontario in 1881 was listed as age 34, living in Harriston, Wellington county. I think it likely this is the man?

There was also a Frances Anderson, 59, miller, living in Fergus in 1871 (p. 64). Death registration (#8787, 1875) indicates Francis was born in Auchterless Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He died of heart disease at the age of 64 and following a six month illness, according to his son, George Anderson, informant, a bookkeeper from Guelph. The doctor gave the cause of death as "vulvulus disease of heart."

  • Death: 26 May 1913; London, Ontario, Canada

A child named Christina Florence Anderson died 19 Oct 1869, aged 13 months, cause of death "decline"; the informant was Robert Anderson (death registration #3351, 1869). The name Christina Florence leads me to believe this child was from this family. By the 1881 census the family had moved to the city of London, Ontario.
