  Residents of Elkland Township were greatly shocked Sunday morning to hear of the death of John Marshall, who for many years has been a prominent and highly respected citizen of this community. Mr. Marshall had not been well during the winter months, but was in Cass City Saturday attending to some business affairs, and when he reached home late in the afternoon, he appeared in his usual health and good spirits.
  He spent the evening with his family playing a few games of checkers and retired about nine o'clock.
  At eleven o'clock, Mrs. Marshall heard him breathing unusually loud, and entering his room, she tried to waken him, but could not. He remained unconscious for about two hours and passed away shortly before one o'clock Sunday morning. Heart trouble was the cause of his death.
  He lived in Wellington County, Canada until he was 25 years of age, then in 1863 moved to Waterloo County where he resided for five years. Later, he moved to Teeswater in Ontario.
  In 1884 the family emigrated to Michigan, settling in Elkland Township.
  Mr. Marshall was well known as a successful farmer and stock raiser.
  He enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
  In the political life of the community, he was active in his younger days and held the positions of highway commissioner and member of the board of review in Elkland Township and served several terms as director in the Bird School District. He also held the office of president of the fair association for several terms during the early years of the society.
  The funeral service was held at the residence Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended.
  Interment in Elkland Cemetery.
