George McGiven

  • Birth: About 1842; Toronto township, Canada West
  • Note: Age 23 when married, resident of Gilford, West Gwillimbury; father George McGiver, mother not named on marriage reg'n. These folks seem to have a different surname in every source I was able to find, and what I did find took creativity! I think I'd need to scan the films to find more records. Birth reg'n for daughter Flossie is under "McGivern"; for son John Henry is "McGuiness", 1881 census is "McGivins" when they lived in West Gwillimbury. In 1881 George's occupation was R.R, Labourer. In 1901 George and Ellen Eadie, same children as in 1881, were living in Toronto. Moreover, daughter Mary Hannah Eddie, dau of George Eddie and Helen Hughes, according to her birth reg'n, born 27 May 1873.

  • Note: Age 21 at the time of his marriage; resident of Innisfil at the time he married. In 1881 census John is listed as the sole occupant of his household, but is listed immediately before his grandparents, James and Mary Hughes. It appears that after the death of his father, he was raised by his grandparents, as he was living with them in 1861, age given then as 2 years old.

    Children in 1891: Alice E. 18; Thomas V. 15; John C. 9; Agnes A. 7. In 1901 Jeremiah lived in Brockville, Ontario and worked in a music store.
    I was told that Jeremiah died in 1904 in BC; however, I think that the death registration for Jeremiah Curtin, age 83, died Vancouver 6 December 1929 must be him: #1929-09-415609. Will check the details at the library.

  • Note: Source: death registration of daughter Maria; believe the family of William A. Orr found in York county in 1852, 1861 and other censuses. In 1852 they are in Vaughan tp, York county. Family listing as shown here is from the 1861 census for York county, which shows William as a farmer, age 40, living with his wife, mother and five children aged 2 to 11. Happily, marriage years for both William and his widowed mother are listed. In 1871 the family is farming in Toronto tp, Peel county--not sure if this is a new name for the same area? In 1901 William and Mary, with daughters Maria and Caroline, are living in Toronto. William is said to have arrived in Canada in 1831; Mary in 1834. 1891 census shows them in St Marks Ward, Toronto: William A 71; Mary Ann 66; Marie M.30 ; Caroline 24. Sons Joseph and Roland are shown on the same page in a household that lists Joseph as the head, age 30; William 40 and his wife Mary A. 36, and children Ethel 9; Florence 7; Marie 6; William A. 5 and Arthur 3. Both Joseph and William were physicians. In 1901 William and Mary are living in , with daughters Maria and Caroline. William is said to have immigrated in 1831.
    Tombstone shows that Wm Andrew Orr was born 2 Nov 1820 in County Tyrone, died 9 July 1905 in Toronto. Death registration indicates age 84, Gentleman, died Beaconsfield, York county, born Ireland, cause of death angina pectoris; informant R.B. Orr.

Orr of 1645 Queen St W, Toronto. Tombstone indicates born Queen's county, Ireland 17 May 1823, died Toronto 8 Nov 1912.
    Obit courtest of MDB: Toronto Star (Nov. 9, 1912): MRS. M. A. ORR DEAD Mother of the Manager of the Toronto Exhibition Mrs. Mary Ann Orr, widow of W. A. Orr of Vaughan Township, and mother of Dr. J. Orlando Orr, manager of the Canadian National Exhibition, died at 15 Beaconsfield street, yesterday in her ninetieth year. Mrs. Orr, who was born in Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland, in 1823, came to Canada with her par- ents in 1824, and her first years were spent at Bondhead, Simcoe County, where her father settled. She is survived by four sons and three daughters.
