When his children were baptised, James' occupation was listed as "Letter-press Printer."
A reference to James appears in the Kildare Observer of 28 November 1885 when he retired as Clerk of the Union in Roscrea after 37 years’ service. He was 67.
In the 1891 Census for England James was a widower, 72, living with his daughter Dr. Sarah Gray and granddaughter Hilda Ralph in Nottingham. In 1901 he was 82, still with daughter Sarah in Nottingham. No occupation given in 1891; in 1901 he was a "Retired Clerk of Union."
