    Ship Details for Rose and Alexander Metcalfe (from shipping records in Australia):
    Rose and Alexander Metcalfe travelled to Melbourne in January 1853 with their child Jane: Rose aged 22, Alexander aged 24, Jane aged 1, travelled on "Argo."
    Also a Miss Metcalf, aged 20, travelled with them, maybe Alexander's sister.
    Rosanna and Alexander Metcalfe travelled to Liverpool in March 1859 on board "British Isles": Rosanna aged 28, Alexander aged 31, Jane aged 6, Sarah Alicia aged 3 (birth certificate 1856, Reg'n number 1777 has her mother's name as Rosanna as does the ship's record).
    In 1901 Alexander he was living in Maryborough, age 73 and listed as a retired builder, suggesting he may have taken over his father's business.

  • Note: In 1880 Elizabeth's age was said to be 36 and she was born in England. In 1900 she was an "inmate" in the Worcester Insane Hospital in Worcester, Mass. and she was said to be divorced. Her age was given as 61, her birth place Ireland. According to the death notice in the New York Times, 2 Feb. 1907, she was 75 at the time of her death. An image of her death registration is now available online at: . Cause of death is said to be "Paranoic condition" (for 27 years) and "Carcinoma of ovaries." Her maiden name was unknown at that time.

    The Bradford Witness, Vol. 101, No. 27, July 06, 1966: Carter, Mrs. Harry W., deceased July 03, 1966:
    Service was held at Steckley Funeral Home, Barrie, on Monday at 11 a.m., for Mrs. Harry W. Carter who died in Royal Victoria Hospital yesterday afternoon in her 84th year. She had been confined to hospital for five weeks but previously had been in fair health at her home, 39 Ross Street.
    Rev. John A. Rodney of St. Giles Anglican Church officiated. Interment was at St. Paul's Cemetery, Coulson's Hill, Highway 11, three miles north of Bradford.
    Mrs. Carter is survived by her only daughter, Mrs. W. Kenneth Walls, Barrie; two granddaughters, Mrs. Keith D. Cameron (Suzanne Walls) of Etobicoke, and Lynne Walls of Toronto; also two great-grandchildren, Karen and Heather Cameron. She was predeceased in 1932 by her husband, who was Reeve of Tecumseth Township and Warden of the County of Simcoe in 1918.
    Mrs. Carter was born Laura Sophia Stephens on October 8, 1882, on Con. 10, West Gwillimbury, only child of the late James Stephens and Isabella Hill. She was educated at Newton Robinson School and was married in 1908 to Harry W. Carter of Bond Head. They farmed for many years on the townline between West Gwillimbury and Tecumseth (Highway 27). Mr. Carter's property was from Con. 8 to Con. 9 of Tecumseth.
    Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Carter was a member of the Methodist Church, then attended Trinity Church, Bond Head, and Trinity Church, Bradford. She became a life member in the Women's Auxiliary of the Anglican Church in Canada. She had been active in many branches of church work, including the choir.
    Mr. Carter sold his farm in 1929 and they moved to Bradford. In 1936 Mrs. Carter moved to Barrie, with her mother, and they resided from 1945 at 30 Theresa Street. In 1954 she went to St. Thomas and lived there until returning to Barrie in 1961. She had been active in Trinity Church, Barrie, for some years.
    In recent years she had been a member of St. Giles Church.

    Sai Wan Memorial is situated in Sai Wan War Cemetery which is located on Cape Collinson Road situated in the north-east of the island of Hong Kong. Hong Kong fell to Japanese forces on Christmas Day 1941 following a brief but intense period of fighting. Most of those buried or commemorated on the island were killed at this time, or died later as internees or prisoners of war during the Japanese occupation. The SAI WAN MEMORIAL forms the entrance to Sai Wan War Cemetery and bears the names of more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in the Battle of Hong Kong, or subsequently in captivity, who have no known grave .
    Attestation papers via ancestry.com: born 11 Nov 1920 in New Richmond, Quebec. Enlisted 29 July 1940. Married 6 Sep 1941.
