Ann Meredith

F, #14871, b. about 1820

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1820; Ireland
  • Note: The 1850 New York city census shows an Ann Meredith, 30 in the same household as others who are known to be children of Richard and Anne: Elizabeth 21, John 18, Frederick 14, Robert 12, Charlotte 10, and Emily 8. It isn't clear whether the enumerator incorrectly recorded Anne, the mother, as being 30 rather than 50, or whether this is a different woman, perhaps a niece, rather than a daughter? To add to the confusion, there was another listing for an Ann Meredith age 50 with a daughter Fanny in 1850--right age for Anne Greene, but if so, who might Fanny have been? I have listed both an Ann born about 1820 and Fanny in this family, but suspect they don't really belong!
One other possibility is that te child baptised as Sarah

Fanny Meredith

F, #14872, b. about 1830

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1830; Ireland
  • Note: Only known record is 1850 Ward 3, Brooklyn, NY census when Fanny was living with Ann Meredith, age 50. As both were born in Ireland, it is assumed that Ann was Ann Greene, widow of Richard Meredith, but this is not proven. This census record was enumerated 20 August, 1850, and Richard is said to have died in June. There are no other known records of a Fanny in this family, so either she was another relative, perhaps a cousin or ??, or this was a different Ann Meredith who just happened to be the same age as Anne Greene. There was no such person listed on the family tree prepared by members of the family.

Richard Meredith

M, #14873, b. 13 May 1833, d. 5 July 1904

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 13 May 1833; Ballybrittas, Ireland
  • Death: 5 July 1904; Brooklyn, New York
  • Burial: 7 July 1904; Greenwood Cemetery, New York
  • Note: In 1870 Richard 34 and Eliza 31 were living in Ward 20, Brooklyn, NY (her name was transcribed as Eliga). In 1880 they were in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1900 Richard was erroneously said to be a widower, living as a "Boarder" in Brooklyn.
Richard's application for a passport in 1900 is now available online from ancestry.com. It provides his date and place of birth and notes that he arrived in the USA on the ship "City of Manchester," sailing from Queenstown (now Cobh, County Cork) the 8th of August, 1862. He became a naturalized citizen October 12, 1896, in Kings County, New York. His physical description was as follows: 66 3/4 years old, 5' 10", high forehead, blue eyes, medium nose, medium mouth, round & full chin, pure white hair, fair complexion, full face. However, I also found him listed on a webpage of "Irish born" naturalizations for Albany, NY: Meredith, Richard, 34, resided Laois, sailed from Queenstown, in Albany, Dec 16, 1868.

In the July 3, 1904 New York Times it was noted that Richard was in hospital "dying from blood poisoning." Index to New York Times obits indicates Jl 6, 9:7.
Death reg'n Clergyman, age 71, married:

Frederick Agustus Meredith

M, #14874, b. June 1835, d. after 1910

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: June 1835; Ireland
  • Death: After 1910
  • Note: Didn't find baptism for Frederick. He was age 12 when he sailed with his parents to USA. In 1850 Frederick was living in New York with several sisters and brothers and was said to be a printer. In the 1889 Denver city directory Frederick A. Meredith is listed as the Editor of the "News"; residence is 1136 32nd. There is a "Miss L.S. Meredith," stenographer at Colo. Securities Co. at the same address. In 1900 Frederick was a farmer in Fort Lupton, Colorado, and he is said to have immigrated in 1855(!); in 1910 he and Emily were living in Denver. Both appear to have died before the 1920 census, although I have not found any death records.

Charlotte Meredith

F, #14875, b. 7 December 1838, d. 24 October 1911

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 7 December 1838; Queen's county, Ireland
  • Christening: 7 May 1840; Maryborough Methodist Church
  • Death: 24 October 1911; Toledo, Ohio
  • Burial: 26 October 1911; Woodlawn Cemetery
  • Note: Methodist baptism records give birth date. In 1850 Charlotte was living with several brothers and sisters in New York City. She was said to be 10 years old. In 1900 she was living wlith her son William. It incorrectly states that she had given birth to two children, probably confusing her with her daughter-in-law. That record indicates she immigrated to the USA in 1859.
Ohio death registration #54754: cause of death diabetes; born 7 Dec 1838, resident of 701 Lincoln, Toledo. Informant was her son William, who was unable to give her parents' names!

Family: William Henry Bellman (b. about 1838, d. before 1900)
