Emily Louise Meredith

F, #14876, b. 30 October 1841, d. after 1920

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 30 October 1841; Maryborough, Queen's county, Ireland
  • Christening: 6 May 1842; Maryborough Methodist Church records
  • Death: After 1920
  • Note: Baptism and birth record extracted by KK from Methodist records for Maryborough. In 1850 Emily is was said to be 8 years old. She was living with several brothers and sisters in the 16th District, New York City. In 1860 she was 18 and living in the 1st District, 7th Ward of New York city with an Irish family whose name appears to be Meay--very poor handwriting. In 1880 Emily was the head of the household and living in Boston. Note that all 5 children were born in different states! In 1900 Emily and Adelaide were living in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her occupation was listed as capitalist. In 1910 she and Adelaide were back in Boston and only 4 of her 5 children were still living. In 1920 they were living with son Frederick and his 6 motherless children in White Plains, NY! This woman sure did get around! I suspect her husband may have been a clergyman, as was her eldest son--that could explain the many moves.
From "Thumb Nail Sketches of White Ribbon Women," edited by Clara C. Chapin, 1895, p. 63; available online aat Google Books:
"Mrs. Emily L. McLaughlin of Boston became identified with the W.C.T.U. in Ohio during crusade days, but began her more active career as a public speaker in 1879 in New England. She belongs to a family of orators, and is sister of Rev. Dr. R.R. Meredith, the famous Sunday-school lesson expositor. She is a magnetic speaker, and to her excellence of Christian character adds culture, ladyhood, and that tact which is also talent. Mrs. McLaughlin is also president of the Boston union as well as National organizer and lecturer."

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1840; Ireland
  • Death: 1891; Texas, USA
  • Note: In 1880 James and Ann lived in Dallas Texas. James was a railroad superintendent. Later census records for his sons indicate the family came to the USA in 1874, 1875 or 1878, but as Sam was said to be born in Massachusetts in 1875 the earlier date is probably most accurate?
  • Note: Anne Alicia Rorke; Another of John Rorke's daughters may have been Anne Alicia Rorke, who, on 6th June 1862, married James Turpin Vanston at St. Peter's Dublin. James was born in 1840 in Maryborough (Portlaoise), Queens County (County Laois), the eldest son of James Maurice Vanston (d. 1884) and his wife, Sarah Turpin (1812 - 1891). He migrated to the United States and died in Chicago on 24th June 1891 at the age of 51. Born in June 1835, Anne Alicia died aged 68 in Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas on 10 Oct 1903.
