William Monk Gibbon

M, #15401, b. 1896, d. 29 November 1987

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1896; Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 29 November 1987
  • Note:
"Gibbon, [William] Monk (1896-1987), man of letters; born in Dublin and educated at St Columba's College and Oxford, he served in the First World War. Inglorious Soldier (1968) tells of his war experiences. His poetry, in collections such as For Daws to Peck At (1929) and Seventeen Sonnets (1932), reflects his admiration for English Georgian verse. The Seals (1935) is a narrative of a hunting expedition in the west of Ireland. Mount Ida (1948) recreates tentative love affairs of schoolteaching days, while The Pupil (1981) confesses his platonic love for a schoolgirl."

"was born in Dublin. He fought in the First World War and went on to Keble College, Oxford. He was an associate of AE, and edited his The Living Torch (London, 1937 ). Gibbon is less well known for his poetry than for his revealing memoirs of his friend Yeats , The Masterpiece and the Man: Yeats as I Knew Him (London, 1959 ), which was taken, at the time of its appearance, as ‘refractory’—the great poet had found Gibbon ‘argumentative’. His own poetry, not much noticed, but respected, was little influenced by Irish models, but rather, in the manner of its presentation, by late Victorians and Edwardians such as Robert Bridges . It is unashamedly replete with poeticisms, inversions, archaisms, and commonplace emotions—which he has defended as proper to poetry—but is nevertheless graceful and well made. At his occasional best he has achieved, in poetry, a terse epigrammatic quality, rather at odds with his less-inspired although technically deft conventional manner."

Anne Alicia Rorke

F, #15402, b. June 1835

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: June 1835; Ireland
  • Death: USA
  • Note: Name from birth registration of son George; death registration for son Sam gives maiden name as O'Rourke. 1880 census says she was 40 years old, but the 1900 census has her 64 and born in 1835--this one is probably correct? In 1900 she was living with her son John and his family.
  • Note: James Turpin Vanston; Another of John Rorke's daughters may have been Anne Alicia Rorke, who, on 6th June 1862, married James Turpin Vanston at St. Peter's Dublin. James was born in 1840 in Maryborough (Portlaoise), Queens County (County Laois), the eldest son of James Maurice Vanston (d. 1884) and his wife, Sarah Turpin (1812 - 1891). Marlborough Clarke Douglas

M, #15405, b. about 1852, d. 5 June 1923

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1852; Ireland
  • Death: 5 June 1923; Beechville, Carlow, Ireland
  • Burial: Killeshin
  • Note: 1911 census lists him as a "House and land agent." Marlborough was years old, had been married 20 years, and he and Minnie had had only one child.
    From the Carlow IGP site:
"One of Carlow's oldest residents, 99 year old Mr. Pat Purcell, Quinagh, has "retired" as an historian and has handed over his vast collection of historical papers to his nephew, Mr. Michael Purcell.
"Part of the collection, which was compiled in 1890 by the late Michael Brophy, a correspondent with The Nationalist and noted local historian, features documents relating to the history of Carlow from the 17 th Century onwards.
"Following Mr. Brophy's death in 1900, his collection was passed to the late Marlborough Douglas who was also engaged in historical research at the turn of the century.
"Following the death of Mr. Douglas in 1923, the collection passed to the late William Hadden and, in 1940 Mr. Hadden gave it to Mr. Purcell."
Irish Times death notice, 5 June 1923: at Beechville, Carlow; survived by wife and daughter, interred at Killeshin.
Death registration, 3rd qtr 1923, age 71, Carlow reg'n district.
    From "
For many years “Beechville” was the residence of the late Mr. Marlborough C. Douglas, the well-known writer on Carlow; he had been a land agent’s clerk with the late Mr. William Fitzmaurice of Kelvin Grove. Mr. James was evidently the owner of Beechville at the time of the construction of the G.S. & W. Railway in 1851, and after the acquisition of land for the building of the railway, Mr. James found that a small portion of his garden, at the rere of the house, had not been acquired, and he declined to sell it in order to save the amenities of his house. The consequence was that the plan of running the railway sidings from the Station to the Railway Bridge could never be satisfactorily completed as the un-acquired portion of the “Beechville” garden projected and still projects into the Railway yard. We now meet two modern houses owned by Mr. Hooper (Highfield) and Mr. Tom O’Neill (Gayville). When the excavating was being done under the bridge by the Railway Co., all the earth was pitched on the site occupied by these houses hence their great height above road level. The “Bluebell Inn’’ was the first coaching inn in Carlow on the road from Dublin. This inn was acquired by the Railway Company when the line was built and had to be demolished as it stood in the way. A house, the present Bluebell, was built in its place some 30 yards nearer the town.
  • Note: Mary (Minnie) Timpson; marriage registered 4th qtr, 1890, Dublin south

John Heagerty

M, #15425, b. 8 October 1787, d. after June 1867

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 8 October 1787; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: After June 1867
  • Note: John was a shoemaker (cordwainer) living in Clonakilty, County Cork. Had thought he might be the John Haggerty shown in FamilySearch died 1864, age 75, Clonakilty reg'n district? However, when his daughter Ellen married in June 1867 he was not listed as deceased, so probably not. A more likely alternative is John Hegarty, died 1867, age 76. LM shows his death date as 31 May 1861? I don't know the source for that date?
May be the John Hegarty whose son Robert was buried at Kilmeen parish: Apr 3, 1844 Hegarty, Robert, son of John and Mary, his wife, of Clonakilty, age 4 years. None of this proven, but seems likely.

Family: Mary (b. about 1800, d. 1880)
