Patrick Meredith

M, #17720, b. about 1858, d. 1 June 1926

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1858; Dublin, Ireland
  • Marriage: 25 August 1883; Mary McMahon; St Nicholas RC Chapel, Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 1 June 1926; Dublin, Ireland
  • Note: 1886 baptism of son Thomas indicates the family then lived at 4 Francis Street.
In 1901 and 1911 Patrick was a widower living on Francis Street, Dublin, with his son Thomas. In 1901 Patrick was 43 years old and a bellows maker; in 1911 he was 53 and had retired. His death was registered the 2nd qtr of 1926 in Dublin South, age 68. He died at his residence, 129 Francis Street, Dublin. He had lived there a long time, as it was also his reported residence when he married in 1883.
The 1921 Dublin Directory lists a Michael Meredith, Bellows Maker on Francis Street? The only Michael Meredith in the 1911 census is 25 years old, son of Richard and Eliza in Tipperary. In 1901 we find that Michael plus another in Sligo, illiterate and age 40. I wonder if the Dublin Directory might be referring to Patrick's son, Thomas Michael? That seems most likely.
Notice from the Irish Independent, Wednesday, June 01, 1927, page 1:
"MEREDITH--First Anniversary--In sad and loving memory of Patrick Meredith, 129 Francis Street, who died June 1, 1926. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on his soul.--Inserted by his loving son, Thomas Meredith. American papers, please copy."
  • Note: Mary McMahon; Patrick Meredith marriage reg'n 4th qtr 1883, Dublin South, V 2, p. 635. Witnesses Joseph and Mary Scott.

Thomas Michael Meredith

M, #17721, b. 1 December 1886, d. 30 April 1953

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1 December 1886; Dublin, Ireland
  • Christening: 22 December 1886; St Mary's RC Pro Cathedral, Dublin
  • Marriage: 23 November 1915; Pearl May Forrest; St Aloysius RC church, Montreal, Quebec
  • Death: 30 April 1953; Massachusetts
  • Burial: Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol, Massachusetts
  • Note: The 1886 birth registration is for an unnamed male child, surname Meredith, but baptism record confirms placement, and indicates he was born in Rotunda Hospital. In the 1901 census his age was 14; 1911 age 24, occupation pianist. In 1904 Thomas Meredith of 129 Francis St, age 17, was registered at Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, charged with "profane language."
Thomas emigrated to Montreal, arriving 18 July 1913, on the ship Tunisian, sailing from Liverpool to Quebec City. He was age 26, RC, occupation pianist, born in Dublin. He married in Montreal. He entered the US in November 1917; the border crossing record indicates that he was 31, occupation music composer, nationality Canadian, race Irish. He had been in New York in 1913, and this time he was going to meet a publisher in New York, Jerome H. Remick, 119 12th St West. It was indicated that he was "Physically Defective." He had a lateral curvature of the spine, his left leg was shorter and there was one other factor that is illegible (note that the handwriting on this record is very hard to read, so I may be mistaken on some of this). He was 5'6", and had a medium complexion, brown hair and green eyes.
In 1922 Thomas, Pearl and the two children crossed into the US to live in Derby Line, VT (about 100 miles from Montreal--right on the Canada-USA border). Initially it had appeared that Thomas had been working there prior to 1922 as there were earlier records of him entering the USA, and that Pearl and the children remained in Canada until 1922. However, a check of the location of these towns reveals that Rock Island, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont are directly across the border from one another. In 1922 Thomas was said to be a "little lame." He was 5' 5 1/2", fair complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. The others were described as follows: "wife Pearl age 25, 5'4 Br, Bk, read & write English never resided in U.S. born in Quebec City, P.Q. son Thomas age 4 Lt hair gray eyes born Montreal P.Q. dau Mary age 18 mos Lt hair Blue eyes, born Rock Isld, P.Q. Mr Meredith is employed in Butterfield Plant at Rock Isld & they are going to reside in Derby Line." That is, although they moved to live in the USA, Thomas continued to be employed across the border in Canada.
From 11 April - 24 July 1927, Thomas (age 47) and Thomas Jr. (age 9) travelled on the Thuringia, in third class accommodation, sailing from Cobh, Ireland to Boston, Massachusetts. Their home address was 989 Main St, Athol, Mass. Thomas was a "machine inspector"; he was said to be an Irish citizen and Thomas Jr. Canadian.
In 1930 Thomas, Pearl and their four children lived in Athol, Worcester county, Massachusetts. Thomas was an inspector at a tool factory. In 1940, same occupation and residence. Three sons still with parents.
When Thomas Michael Meredith registered for the WW II draft, 26 April 1942, age 55, his address was 1020 Main St., Athol, Mass. His wife was named, and he was employed at L.S. Starrett Co. in Athol. It gives his birth date as 7 December 1886. The Town Directory for Athol MA in 1954 stated that Thomas died on April 30, 1953 at the age of 66. The 1953 Directory had him listed as a machine operator at LSSCo (directory info from grandson JFM).

Notice from the Irish Independent, 23 December, 1915:
    "Meredith and Forrest -- November 23, 1915
(by Special License) at St Aloysius Church, Maisonneuve, Canada, Thomas, only surviving son of Patrick and the late Mary Meredith, Francis street, Dublin, and nephew of the Very Rev. Thomas A. In 1911 in Toronto there is a Pearl Forrest, dau of John and Mary, born Ontario Aug 1895; however, there is no birth registration for such a person? All in all, Pearl must remain a mystery for now!
