Robert Wolfe DeWolfe

M, #18700, b. about 1815, d. before 1900

Biography

  • Birth: About 1815; County Cork, Ireland
  • Death: Before 1900; Portland, Maine, USA
  • Note: Irish marriage record is for Robert Wolfe, but in Maine the family was known as DeWolfe. Bennett's book on Bandon, Ireland indicates that the Wolfes came to Ireland with Cromwell.
Tithes records (early 1830s) show most Cork Wolfes were in Kilmeen, Ballymoney, Kilgariff and Kilkerranmore parishes. Y-DNA for Robert's gg grandson is a match with descendants of the Hagerties who lived in the same part of Cork as these Wolfe families. Griffiths Valuation shows: Robert Wolfe with land in Upper Tawnies, Kilgariffe; Ballyroe, Kilmacabea; and Curraheen, Ross. His holding in Maul, Ross included house and offices, in addition to land. These records probably were dated 1853.
Info from a descendant: "Robert DeWolfe, a name that was also listed as "Wolfe" in the records in Ireland came, it states in his immigration papers, came from County Cork in Ireland in 1856 and ended up in Portland Maine in the U.S. His son, Thomas DeWolfe married Tamsen Deane, who emigrated during the 1880's who had an easily traceable ancestry, in the Cork town of Dunmanaway."
1860 census for Portland, Maine shows Robert De Wolfe, age not clear but may be 46?, labourer, born Ireland; wife Elizabeth 36, sons James 13 and William 1. Willliam born Maine, others in Ireland. 1870 census (indexed dewolf): Robert 55 labourer, Eliza 46, James 20 harness maker, William 11, Thomas E. 5, Benjamin 3, all said to be born Ireland. 1880 census: Robert de Wolfe 60 street labourer, Elizabeth 56, James 33 retail grocer, Robert 21 retail grocer clerk, Thomas E. 15 hat factory, Benjamin 13 scholar; were the 3 youngest born in Maine.

Family: Elizabeth (Eliza) Deane (b. about 1824, d. after 1910)
