Henry Meredith

M, #14038, b. about 1792, d. 21 November 1868

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1792; Ireland
  • Death: 21 November 1868; Ontario
  • Burial: St Mark's Anglican Cemetery, Pakenham tp
  • Note: Henry Meredith of Pakenham owned SE1/2 Lot 5 Concession 8 in Pakenham Township and the log house and barns which he built were still standing early in 2006. His 4th son, Thomas lived on the Meredith homestead in Cedar Hill near Pakenham.
Name probably Henry? listed in Pakenham, Lanark county, Canada West (Ontario) in the 1851 census (recorded as of January 1852) as head of household, age 60--only first intitial given. Others in the household were: wife E. age 45, daughters E. 17 and I. 5; sons R. 15, M. 13, H. 11 and T. 8, all born Ireland, and daughter A. 3, born Canada, indicating the family came to Canada about 1848. The family was Church of England. The 1871 online heads of households find the sons: Robert 40, in Marlborough, Carleton county; Matthew 30 in North Gower, Carleton county; Henry 26 and Thomas 22 in Pakenham (some discrepancies in ages, but not a concern?); all were farmers and Church of England.
Tombstone indicates Henry was born County Sligo in Ireland. The 1851 agricultural census provides a fascinating glimpse into farm life at the time: Henry held 100 acres on the 9th Con., Lot E5 in Pakenham tp; he had 20 acres under cultivation; 9 acres under crops in 1851; 10 acres under pasture in 1851; 1 acre garden/orchard; 80 acres wild or wooded. In 1851 2 acres yielded 20 bushels of wheat; no barley or rye; 1 acre - 10 bushels peas; 3 acres - 3 bushels oats; no "B. Wheat" [buckwheat?]; 1 acre - 8 bushels Indian corn; 2 acres - 20 bushels potatoes; no turnips; 20 bundles or tons of hay; 20 lbs wool; 15 lbs. maple sugar; no cider; 8 yards fulled cloth; no linen; 12 yds flannel were produced on his 20 cultivated acres.

Charles William Rice Meredith

M, #14039, b. about 1865, d. 9 March 1916

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1865; Kings county, Ireland
  • Death: 9 March 1916; Dublin, Ireland
  • Note: In 1884, when daughter Irene was baptised, their address was 4 Derrynane Parade, North Circle Road, Dublin. When he married Mary Sinnott in 1886 his residence was listed as Glasnevin.
In 1901 Charles was a widower living in Dublin with his two sons and his sister-in-law, Ellen Sinnott, 25, unmarried.
In 1911 Charles and Elizabeth and their 3 children lived at 58.2 Russell Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin. Elizabeth's brother James/Seamus Hughes was the head of the household. Charles was said to be 46. The entire family is listed as Roman Catholic.
On March 15th, 1916 Charles was hit by a tram car on Waterloo Road, Dublin and suffered serious head injuries: "Compression of brain. Probably fracture of skull. Accidently caused by collision with Tram Car." He died the next day in hospital. His occupation was horse trainer and he was a widower. His age was given as 55 on the death registration. Residence at the time was 19 Goldsmith St., Dublin. It appears that his brother-in-law, James/Seamus Hughes raised the children thereafter.
From KW: The marriage to Bridget Dowling nee Hyenan was in November 1883 in a Registry Office; she was a widow. Eirene (Irene) Mary Meredith was born the following month in December and baptised RC in January 1884, the Irene Mary whose death is registered in 1888. My assumption at the moment is that he is the same Charles William Rice Meredith who married Mary Aloysius Sinnott in the RC Cathedral in 1886 and that he was the son of Charles Meredith and Eliza Wilson from the Reary branch. However, the 1883 certificate gives his father's name as George, and the 1886 certificate calls him a bachelor. He is a shadowy figure though - the births of his sons Charles and Matthew who figure in the 1901 census (but then disappear) don't appear in the BMD index. He married again in 1906 to Elizabeth Hughes and died in 1916 after being hit by a tram car. His father Charles successfully sued him in 1886 for selling one of his horses and pocketing the proceeds.
  • Note: Elizabeth Hughes; Marriage registered 4th quarter 1906, Dublin North.
  • Note: Mary Aloysius Sinnott; Marriage reg'n 3rd qtr 1886, Dublin North district. Witnesses Patrick Sinnott and Anne Sinnott. Register image available at churchrecords website:
