  • Note: 1871 Census: John and Debra were living in Goderich tp; also in household was William, age 29 (also born Ireland). The family was Church of England. The Cantelon Family History indicates that John "left a family in Ireland and remarried in Canada, but his line soon died out."
    Ontario death registration #1070: age 96, cause of death old age and general debility; informant David Cantelon, farmer, 10th Concession, Goderich tp. (1879 County Atlas shows a D. Cantelon farming lot 32, 10th concession).

  • Note: Howard Edward Panschow; Marriage record in FamilySearch: indexed from Michigan marriages; Buchanan was the home of Howard's aunt, Susan McCormick, nee Dafoe (half sister of Margaret Haggerty Panschow): witnesses were Thomas and Mamie McCormick. This was a second marriage for both.

  • Note: John was born in Fermanagh, and hence technically isn't really a Queen's county Clarke; however, he is included here as he lived most of his life in Queen's county and all of his children were born there.
    Memorial Sketch in Wesleyan-Methodist Magazine, August 1882, pp. 575-578, available via Google Books. His wife was from Dairyhill, Queen's county, and after their marriage he lived there. Extracts from his diary indicate that he turned 50 on April 23, 1871. He was very active in the Primitive Methodist church.
    Probate granted 16 May 1870.

    Los Angeles Times Obituary, 12 April 1931: "CLARKE, April 12, Margaretta E. Clarke of 2211 North Beachwood Drive, beloved mother of Terence E. and Gypsy Clarke, and mother-in-law of Helen Clarke, all of Hollywood. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 14, at 10 a.m., from the parlors of W.M. Stother, 6240 Hollywood Boulevard. Parking for cars provided."

Florence Caroline (Gypsy) Clarke

  • Note: Baptism record from Ancestry's Drouin Collection. Listed as Caroline in 1891, age 4 months; Florence in 1901 and Florence C. in 1911. Appears as Florence Kilgour in 1930 census in Los Angeles, a wlidow, living with her mother, occupation motion picture actress, immigration year 1915. In 1940 Florence C. Kilgour, widow age 49, was living alone in a house which she owned, located at 20962 Roosevelt Highway, Malibu. The occupation column was blank. I am unable to find any records of her after that time--seems not to have died in California, unless listed under another name?.
    Florence appeared in two silent movies in 1917, "His Baby Doll" and "Sole Mates." In the latter film it appears she was the female lead, with Ben Turpin in the leading role. In 1926 she appeared in "Desperate Chance," where her name is listed as Gypsy Clarke. She was a very active member of the Hollywood Chess and Bridge Club in the 1930s.

John Patrick Terence Esmonde Clarke

  • Death: 20 September 1972; San Diego, California
  • Note: Other than the baptism record, all records give his name as Terence Esmonde.
    Immigrated to USA in 1921; registered his intent to become a citizen in 1924, at which time he was single, 5'7" tall, weighed 150 lbs and had brown hair and eyes. He was a salesman and resided at 2211 Beachwood Drive, Los Angeles. He became a naturalized citizen July 1949, at which time he resided at 10045 Valley Spring Lane, North Hollywood.
    1931 obit for mother indicates Terence and his wife Helen were living in Hollywood at that time. They were in Los Angeles in 1940, when Terence was a saleman, age 42. SSDI death record gives address at time of death as 92008 Carlsbad, San Diego, California.

Allen Wise Clarke

  • Note: Age 3 months in 1891 census. In 1911 Allan was living with his parents in county Wexford, age 20, born Newport. Allan Wise Clarke, age 22, labourer, son of Allan Wise Clarke of Parkfield House, Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland, on S.S. Arabic, sailed from Liverpool 20 May 1913 to Portland, Maine, USA, enroute to Montreal, Quebec.
    He enlisted in the 5th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, in Lethbridge, 23 November 1914, and served overseas. When he enlisted, he gve his occupation as Banker, and he identified his father, Dr. A. W. Clarke of Liverpool as his next of kin. His height was 5' 10" and he had blue eyes, light brown hair and was of a ruddy complexion.
    Allan was killed in action 3-5-1918 in Neuville Vitasse, France. The circumstances were: "Was in charge of teams packing ammunition, to a forward position and while leading the column, the enemy opened fire on the road and he was instantly killed by a shell."
