  • Note: William completed his BA at Trinity College and was a solicitor in Dublin. In the 1911 census he and his wife and daughters, "Kathanne Carew" and Isabel Agnes lived at 30 Morehampton Road, Pembroke West, Dublin. Both William and and his wife were 61. The family is listed as Roman Catholic. There is a visitor, Eleanor Connolly, probably a sister of Lila, also Catholic. The William Rice genealogy gives no ages for this family--perhaps Catholicism led to a rift?
    In 1901 they are living on Mount Street Lower in Dublin.

    Death notice from Dublin Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 23 Sept. 1878: "August 19, at Port Blair, the Andamans, died of typhoid fever, Edward Bishopp Meredith, Surgeon, H.I.M. Bengal Medical Service, aged 24 years."

Richard Edmund Meredith

  • Note: Richard was a barrister, admitted to the bar in 1879. He was appointed Queen's Council in 1892 and was a Bencher, King's Inn in 1894. He became a Supreme Court Judge in 1896 and retired in 1912. In the 1911 census he lived at 31 with his wife and two children. Some time later his address was 32 Molesworth St., Dublin according to Who's Who. Richard was Master of the Rolls in Ireland. He had 3 sons and 2 daughters. A master's thesis by B.F. Clarke (UWO, 1978) reports that in 1916 a daughter of Richard E. Meredith inherited $1000. from Ada Walsingham Meredith, of London, Ontario, Canada. The date of his death was recorded in the Family Bible of Ada Walsingham Meredith. Cannot find a death reg'n for him in Ireland.

    "Richard Edmund Meredith was fourth son of William Rice Meredith of Dublin, solicitor; was born 1856; matriculated in the Queen's University from Galway College; entered the Middle Temple 1876; was called to the Irish Bar 1879; became a queen's council 1892; married Annie, daughter of John Pollock of Dublin 1880; became judge of the Land commission 1898; was appointed master of the rolls 1908(?); retired 1912; resided in Dublin in Fitzwilliam-square; died 1916; left issue."

  • Note: Rathmines School Roll (published 1932 Dublin)in which brief admission details are updated with later biographical info. 1874 Meredith, Frederick Walsingham, son of William R. Meredith. a. 14½ b. Dublin. Solicitor (W.R. Meredith & Sons), President of the Incorporated Law Society 1910-1911 [KH: this implies a birth year of ca. 1859/60, depending on month of admission in 1874]. In 1911 lived at Ardverne, Shankill, County Dublin, according to genealogy prepared by William Rice Meredith. However, the 1911 census has them at 35 Shanganagh, Rathmichael, County Dublin. The household had three household servants, in addition to Frederick's niece who was employed as their governess.
    Past president and much esteemed member of the Law Society. Death registration for Frederick W. Meredith, age 64, registered 1st quarter 1924 in Rathdown. Died at his residence, Lordello, Shankill, Dublin.

    Arthur was a Dublin barrister and Kings Council. The biography of his son notes his "opinion . . . was sought by De Valera on legal matters concerning the Irish FreeState."
    In 1911 census the family is still living at 25 Upper Mount Street. Arthur was 49; his occupation was "King's Counsel in actual practice." They refused to state their religion.

Isabella Agnes Meredith

  • Note: Isabella married twice and had children by both marriages. The 1911 census indicates that she had had three children in her then current marriage (to Wm Gibbon), and had been married for 17 years. A master's thesis by B.F. Clarke (UWO, 1978) reports that in 1916 two daughters of "Isabella Gibbons" inherited $1000. each from Ada Walsingham Meredith, of London, Ontario, Canada.

  • Note: In the 1911 census the Gibbons lived at 72 Dundrum in Dublin. William's occupation appears to be "Rector and ? Dean of James."

    "William Monk Gibbon was a Church of Ireland clergyman, from 1900 vicar of the parish of Taney, Dundrum. There Lily Yeats, sister of W. B. Yeats, was a parishioner. There was also a family relationship: Gibbon and the Yeats family were cousins. There was no love lost between the poets Gibbon and Yeats, however; and the biography Gibbon wrote was rather hostile. In 1963 he collaborated in the editing and publication of Michael Farrell's posthumous novel "Thy Tear's Might Cease.' "
    Probably the William Monk Gibbon whose death was registered in Rathdown District 2nd qtr 1935.

  • Note: William Rice Meredith noted that George Meredith was made Captain in Her Majesty's 14th Regiment of Foot in 1875. At the time of his marriage in 1883 he was a Lieut.-Colonel in the 11th Regiment, of 23 Augustine's Road, Bedford, England. In 1901 he was enumerated as Lieutenant Colonel George V. Meredith, retired, age 62, at 23 St Augustine Rd, Bedford. Under the heading "Profession or Occupation" was noted: Lieut. Col. Devon Reg't, Retired army officer. There were two servants in the household.
    George's death was registered in the first quarter of 1908 (UK death registration index).

James Creed Meredith

  • Note: James was a boarder in a residential grammar school in Snettisham, Norfolk in 1901. His age was 15.
    In 1906 he was certified as second mate in the merchant seamen by the British Board of Trade; he became first mate in 1911 and ship master in 1913 (Certificates of Competency images available at ancestry.com).
    At the time of death he was a resident of Taney Rectory, Dundrum, County Dublin, but he died in Carnarvonshire, Wales. His will mentioned his wife and her brother, I assume because she was left with 2 small children when he died?
