George Frederick Meredith

M, #10526, b. 2 November 1878, d. 12 September 1947

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 2 November 1878; Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 12 September 1947; Hudson, New York, USA
  • Burial: Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson, New York
  • Note: Some time ago a family member in Ireland told me that George first married a much older woman against his family's wishes and later left her and emigrated to New York state. That woman is now known to be Elizabeth Drimmie, nee Phillips. I was also told he had two children named Margaret and Ruth, and that after his first wife died he had married again.
The Irish census of 1911 records George (33) and Elizabeth (47) living in Ballynamony, County Kildare. George was a farmer. Elizabeth's 18-year-old daughter, Millicent Drimmie, was also in the household. George and Elizabeth had been married for 3 years. Millicent was born in Kings county.
US immigration records indicate that George sailed from Queenston, Ireland on 15 June 1899 on the SS Majestic at the age of 21 years and 6 months. He intended to travel to Hudson, NY.
Census records show that George was living in New York in 1900, at which time he was 21 years old, single and worked in a woolen mill. He was said to have immigrated to the USA a year earlier. He returned to Ireland some time between 1900 and 1908 when he married Elizabeth Drimmie. He is probably the George Meredith of Athy, Ireland, age 28, single, who sailed from Queenstown, Ireland to New York, arriving 14 April 1907. He served in WWI for the British Army, enlisting in Ireland in 1917. At that time he indicated he had previously served with the "S.A. Constby. S.I.I.Y. & Irish Horse #48". His granddaughter Margaret Wolfe has several medals he was awarded. Margaret indicates George was also granted land in Burma for his military service from the British.
Ancestry.co.uk website has images of George's military records. They indicate George was born 19 September 1875, a date which is inconsistent with his age as given in the immigration and census records of 1899 and 1900. Moreover, his birth registration indicates 2 November 1878.
After the war, George returned to New York, presumably sometime after the 1920 census, but before starting his family in New York. His wife Mary Kennedy (apparently his second wife, although it it not clear if he ever divorced his first wife who lived until 1939) died in 1928 leaving four little girls, aged three and a half months to 6 years old. George was unable to care for the children and they were placed in an orphanage. A year later the two younger children were adopted and they were raised by other families.
In 1930 George Meredith aged 52 was living as a boarder in the household of Mary A. Henshaw in Stockport, Columbia County, NY. He was a carpenter working in a woolen mill and indicated he had immigrated to the USA in 1898. Also in 1930 (as of April 8) the two eldest daughters, Ruth and Margaret Meredith, were listed as "inmates" in an orphanage occupied by 43 children aged 2 to 15, 4 matrons, a superintendent and a servant. Ruth was 7 years old; Margaret was 4 yrs, 7 mos. The address of the orphanage was 400 State St., Hudson, NY. In 1940 Ruth was still in the orphanage, but Margaret was living with her father and step-mother, age 14.
