Rebecca Meredith

F, #10292, b. about 1819, d. 12 April 1893

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1819; Cappagh, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Christening: 1 January 1820; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Marriage: 30 December 1858; John Meredith; Simcoe County, Canada West
  • Death: 12 April 1893; Mulmer, Simcoe County, Ontario
  • Note: Baptism, Maryborough Register, p. 91. Rebecca's status is somewhat controversial, due to the fact that in the 1881 census she is living with her brother Thomas, and both of them are said to be married. However, her married name was also Meredith and in 1891 she is living with another brother, Edward, and she is clearly said to be Edward's sister and a widow. It now appears that her husband abandoned her and their son soon after they married, as we believe we have found him living elsewhere in Ontario. Census records show her as 31 in 1861; 32 in 1871; 62 in 1881; 70 in 1891.

Susanna Meredith

F, #10293, b. 23 December 1823, d. 28 January 1904

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 23 December 1823; Queens County, Ireland
  • Christening: 7 January 1824; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Marriage: 3 June 1853; James Hovenden; Ballyfin Parish, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 28 January 1904; Toronto, Ontario
  • Note: Baptism and birth dates from the Maryborough Parish Register, p. 109. 1871 Census has Susanna a widow living in a household headed by her stepson, Richard Hovenden, 32, Printer, in Yorkville (Toronto); others in the household are Mary A. 22, Jane E. 16, William J. 14, and James 11. Mary was born Ireland, the others are Susanna's children, born Ontario.
In 1891 the head is R. J. Hovenden 50, Artist Printer; Susanna 55, Mary Ann 38, Jane Eliza 33 and James M. 32, all living in St. Andrews Ward, Toronto.
In 1901 Susanna is with Jennie, James and Mary A. Toronto Centre, Ward 3, p. 1. Her birth date is listed as 16 December 1824. She is said to have immigrated to Canada in 1830, which cannot be correct (perhaps misread and should be 1850?).
In 1911 Richard is again the head of the household. Here Mary Ann, Jennie and William are said to be Richard's brother and sisters. It looks as if Susanna was a second wife to James Hovenden, and that Richard and Mary Ann were his children by a previous marriage.
Ontario death registration #1382: address was 260 Wellington in Toronto, cause of death senility and influenza.
  • Note: James Hovenden; James Hovendon of Ballykehavin and Susan Meredith of Cappa

Family: James Hovenden (b. about 1810, d. 9 March 1868)

Harriet Meredith

F, #10294, b. 12 August 1825

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 12 August 1825; Queens County, Ireland
  • Christening: 20 September 1825; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: Clonenagh parish, Queen's County
  • Burial: 16 October 1825; St Peter's Church, Maryborough
  • Note: Baptism register p. 2, #11. The burial register indicates that the child buried 16 October was three months of age; however, by the process of elimination and due to a later child being named Harriet, it is likely that these baptism and burial records refer to the same child.

William (Ballycarnan) Meredith

M, #10298, b. about 1789, d. 7 November 1867

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1789; possibly Queens County, Ireland
  • Death: 7 November 1867; Ballycarnan, Queen's County
  • Burial: 9 November 1867; Maryborough, Queen's County
  • Note: William obtained a 30-year lease from Matthew Sheffield Cassan for 46 acres of land in Ballycarnan in April 1830, and he was listed there in the Tithes Applotment records of 1833. Several other lessees, all with Irish names, also were granted leases, but theirs were renewable annually. The following is the wording on William's lease:
Lease dated 3rd April, 1830, from Mathew Cassan to William Meredith, for the life of Christian [presume this should be Christopher] Meredith, or 31 years from 1830, at the yearly rent of £30 ; covenant to bring to the Dwelling-house of the Lessor 45 statutable kishes of turf, and every Christmas two fat pullets, and in default thereof, to pay 1s. for each kish of turf, and 1s. for each pullet, to be recovered by distress as rent, and in case of no direction being given to Lessee in respect of said turf and fowl, he covenanted to pay 1s. in the pound receiver's fees ; covenant against alienation under a penalty of £50 sterling. The quantity stated in the lease is 27a. 0r. 26p. Irish plantation measure. The original lease is not in hand, but a copy obtained from the tenant will be handed to the purchaser."
List of voters for Maryborough East shows William Meredith of Ballycarnan, registered 20 October 1840. William may have been a brother of Anne Meredith who married Christopher Brennan in 1814.
In 1859 both Christopher, age 34 and William age 65 were registered in the Queen's county gaol, charged with common assault.
Probably the William who died 1867, age 78, Ballycarnan, buried Maryborough; cause of death senile decay, 8 months; informant Christopher Meredith.
DNA suggests a close relative to Richard Meredith who was married to Mary Anne Alexander--perhaps brothers?

Elizabeth Sothern

F, #10299, b. about 1799, d. October 1863

Biography

  • Birth: About 1799; Ireland
  • Death: October 1863; "America" (could be Canada?)
  • Burial: 31 July 1864; Maryborough, Queen's county, Ireland
  • Note: Spelling of maiden name may not be accurate--difficult to read (p. 91). From the Maryborough parish register:
Buried 31 July 1864, Mrs. Meredith, Ballycarney, age 64; "This person died in America in October 1863, was put into a vault there for some months, then brought over by her daughter for burial."
Elizabeth may have been from Clondarrig--the only Sothern listed in the Tithes in Queen's county was a Thomas Suthern in Clondarrig in 1830. On the Griffiths, in 1850, a Miss Adelaide Southern had extensive holdings in Clondarrig; several of the blocks were subleased to either Anne, Rice or William Meredith.

Christopher Meredith

M, #10300, d. 17 February 1893

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 30 December 1819; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 17 February 1893; Ballycarnan, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Burial: 19 February 1893; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Note: Maryborough Baptism Register, p. 91: Christopher who died in 1893 at 74, buried Maryborough. There was a Christopher Meredith who was a land-holder in Cappagh and Ballycarnan (just south of Maryborough), land which had been held by William--dates fit and name Christopher uncommon among the Merediths. Baptism records for children indicate they were farming in Cappoley in 1867, 1869 and 1872. However, the 1871 registration for Margaret gives their home as Ballycarnan.
Also probably the Christopher referred to in FREEMANS JOURNAL 23-NOV-1882 MANSION HOUSE: A meeting of the above committee was held yesterday in the Mansion House, the Lord Mayor in the chair.
The following grants were made: . . . John Kavanagh and William Harrigan, Clondarrig, Maryborough, were granted £2.18.0., for law costs. They were served with an ejectment by Christopher Meredith, a farmer.

Christopher Meredith who was registered at the Maryborough Gaol in 1858, age 35, for assault. In 1859 both Christopher, age 34 and William age 65 were registered, charge was common assault.
Letters of administration for his estate (£375) granted to John Meredith of Ballycarny.
There was a Christopher Southern in the Griffiths records. He lived in Mountmellick in 1853--possibly related to this family?
