Rice (of Clondarrig) Meredith

M, #10360, b. about 1797, d. 26 March 1867

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1797; Ireland
  • Death: 26 March 1867; Clondarig, Queen's County
  • Burial: 28 March 1867; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Note: Maryborough East voter registration of Rice Meredith of "Clondarrigmoyle" 20 October 1840 probably this man. Rice of Clondarrig, died 26 March 1867, buried Maryborough 28 March, aged 70 according to parish register, 69 according to state death registration. Rice was a farmer and a widower at the time of his death. Cause of death appears to be Pulmonary typhus. Present at death was [illegible] Whelan, who signed with an X.
At: there is a note that an old corn [grist or flour] mill once stood a few hundred yards from the Clondarrig cemetery and was run by a family named Meredith--presumably Rice or someone from his family.
Parents could be Rice Meredith and Anne Neill or Samuel Meredith and Sarah Ince--most likely the former?

  • Death: 4 June 1911; Massachusetts, USA
  • Burial: 7 June 1911; Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Massachusetts
  • Note: Baptism recorded in Maryborough Register, p. 29, # 283. 1900 Census for Worcester, Mass. gives birth date of Feb. 1840--age given was 60, 5 years older than Frances? Samuel and Frances immigrated to USA in 1889. His occupation there was Mill Laborer.
Deed 1878-4-218 - LDS film no. 0529894: Samuel Meredith – Bankruptcy (Regd. 25 Jan 1878 at 27 mins. past 1200)
Certificate of the vesting of the estates and effects -68- The Bankruptcy of Ireland Amendment Act 1872 In the Court of Bankruptcy in Ireland – In the Matter of Samuel Meredith of Clondarrig Maryborough in the Queen’s County farmer – This is to certify that all the estate and effects real and personal of the said Samuel Meredith the Bankrupt in the Matter have vested in Charles Henry James and Lucius Henry Deering the official assignees of the said Court and in Christopher Meredith of Cappoley Maryborough in the Queen’s County farmer, creditors assignes in the said matter pursuant to the statute – Given under the seal of the Court at Dublin this nineteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight A.F. Lloyd Dep Registrar –seal- Frederick Croskerry and John Rae Solicitors No. 21 [xx] Ormond Quay Dublin. (extracted by kw)
A notice in the newspaper reported the following: "BANKRUPTCY DIVISION (Before Judge Miller) In re Samuel Meredith.
"The bankrupt was a farmer at Clondarrick, Queen's County. Mr. Carton, Q.C. (instructed by Mr. Croakerry), on behalf of the assignees, examined him as to the sale of his farm of 32 acres to Wm. Meredith for £135. He admitted that the farm had been sold, but denied that there had been any previous arrangement to surrender the farm to him again after settling with his creditors, who were relatives of his. The case was adjourned."
In 1894 Samuel, age 60 and his daughter Mary Sheppard, with Mary's three children, sailed from Queenstown to Philadelphia on the ship British Princess, departed 5 Sept. 1894. They are said to be residents of Portarlington. Samuel had not previously been in the USA, he had $100. with him, and he was to visit his son at 11 Cheever St, Worcester, Mass.
I also found his death registration in Massachusetts (on FamilySearch):
Samuel Meredith, wid, age 65, occupation Retired Mill Operative, died 4 Jun 1911, of 20 Locust St, Leicester, Massachusetts, son of Rice Meredith and Annie Hill, born Ireland, cause of death endocarditis, informant was his son (who unfortunately is not named, but see info re: son Rice in Massachusetts, USA census, who immigrated to USA in 1887). Again, there is a problem with his age--if he was 60 in 1900, then couldn't have been 65 in 1911. As well, the death registration incorrectly says his parents were both born in Scotland!

Edward Meredith

Biography

  • Birth: About 1832; Queen's county, Ireland
  • Marriage: 13 February 1855; Susanna Moore; Mountrath parish, Queens County, Ireland
  • Death: 6 July 1892; Springfield, Queen's county
  • Note: Death registration for Frances Meredith (nee Thompson) names Edward of Irey as her son, suggesting that the Edward who married Susanna Moore must be the son of Frances and Thomas Meredith, rather than the son of Thomas and Susanna of The Oak (baptised in 1825). The marriage entry records that Edward was 23 years old and a resident of Springfield (which family tradition had held was the home of Edward from The Oak).
The death of an Edward Meredith, aged 60, was registered 4th qtr 1892, Mountmellick district, death record from rootsireland confirms this; cause of death was "haemotemosis". Google reveals that haematemesis is vomiting of blood--ulcers? The death of another Edward, aged 33, was also registered the same quarter--believed to be father and son, suggesting an accident or a disease of some sort?

Richard W. Meredith

M, #10374, b. 12 April 1832, d. 10 February 1912

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 12 April 1832; Queen's county, Ireland
  • Christening: 20 April 1832; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 10 February 1912; Victoria, British Columbia
  • Burial: Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, BC
  • Note: Not proven that this Richard is the son of William and Esther. Only the father's name was indicated in the marriage register--eliminated Wm and Elizabeth Meredith as they had another child born in December 1832 (Register p. 24, # 236). Richard was a farmer when he married, a "keeper in [the Maryborough] lunatic asylum" in 1857 (as was his father-in-law a year earlier); in 1865 his occupation was "turnkey," perhaps different words for the same job.
In 1861 the family was in Manchester, England: 1861 England Census - City of Manchester, Saint Michael's Ward, Ecclesiastical District of St. George, #23 Abel Street: Richard Meredith, Head, Married, 27, "Out of Employment" born Ireland; Ellen Meredith, Wife, 25, Dressmaker, born Ireland; Caroline Meredith 3 born Ireland; William Meredith 1 born Birmingham. Thomas is also said to be born in England (May 1861), but he was baptised in Ireland in July. It looks as if Richard was unemployed and hence the family returned to Ireland shortly after Thomas was born.
In 1871 the family was in Tecumseth tp, Simcoe County, Ontario: Richard 38 Farm Labourer, Ellen 36, Caroline 13 (all born Ireland); William 11 and Thomas 10, both born England; born in Ireland: Esther 9 and Annie 6; and born in Canada: Rice 4 and "Florin" 2. This suggests the family came to Canada in 1866, between the births of Annie and Rice.

In 1891 Richard and Ellen were enumerated in Broadview (located along the now transcanada highway east of Regina in what is now Saskatchewan, but then was the district of Assiniboia) in the North West Territories. Richard is said to be a farmer, age 50, Ellen is 45 and none of the children are listed with them. Richard and Ellen are found in Denver, Colorado in the 1900 USA census, where Richard was a landlord, born Ireland April 1832, married 34 years and immigrated in 1866 (which would be the year they arrived in Canada, not USA as intended). In 1911 Richard was living with his daughter Esther Collinge, then a widow, in Victoria, British Columbia. His death reg'n gives birth date of 18 April, 1832; born Ireland, son of William Meredith; resident of 1903 Chambers St, Victoria; cause of death old age debility and heart disease; the form also indicates he had been a resident of Victoria for 6 years, and of Canada for 46 years.
From a presentation by his grandson, Dr. Rice Howard Meredith:
Richard and Mary Ellen Meredith came to Canada "by sailing vessel in 1866 with five children, three more to be born in Canada. They found their way to the Bond Head, Alliston area, 50 miles north of Toronto, to which several families from Queen's County had migrated in 1842, families bearing the names of Meredith, Banting, Hipwell, Carter and others." Rice also noted that Richard died in 1912 in Victoria, Canada.

  • Death: 28 September 1906; Victoria, British Columbia
  • Burial: Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, BC
  • Note: Family records list her as Mary Ellen, but all documentation I have found says simply Ellen: their marriage record and all census records in England, Canada and the USA. Ellen was said to be 20 when she married, suggesting she must have been born in 1836. The 1900 census indicates she had given birth to 9 children, 6 of whom were still living. However, as far as I can determine, only Rice and Ellen had died before 1900?
