William (Rossnagad) Meredith

M, #10314, b. about 1800, d. June 1887

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1800; possibly from The Oak, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Marriage: Before 1822; Esther; Ireland
  • Death: June 1887; Queen's County, Ireland
  • Burial: 14 June 1887; Maryborough, Queen's County
  • Note: William's first son was named Thomas suggesting that his father was also a Thomas. William could be a son of Thomas of The Oak--not proven.
Maryborough East voters list shows William Meredith of Rossnegad registered 25 June 1839. Parish registers show that in 1827 William was a resident of Clonenagh parish; in 1839 a farmer in Maryborough; in 1841 a farmer in Cappagh; probably these are all the same man, William of Rossnagad who died in 1887, age 87, death registered 3rd qtr, Mountmellick district. Descendants of Richard W. Meredith and his wife Ellen Lane have a photo said to be of Richard's father William Meredith of Cappagh. They also have family records indicating that Richard was from "The Oaks," supporting the theory that William was a son of Thomas of The Oak.

Thomas was a widower and a shopkeeper in Maryborough at the time of his marrage to Elizabeth Bulfin. Rice's will was dated 16 October, 1906 (Simcoe County Court, Vol. N, p. 449, file #5847). It directed that after his debts and funeral expenses were paid, the residue was to be divided between his "sister, the wife of Robert Carter, [his] brother Richard Meredith and niece Esther Collinge of Brandon [Manitoba]." The executors named were his cousin James Banting [James was a son of Esther Banting, nee Meredith, believed to be a sister of Rice's father] of West Gwillimbury and his nephew Henry William Carter of Tecumseth. And it is likely that he is also the Thomas of Cappagh who was buried in May of 1890, aged 85.
Baptism records for the children indicate that Thomas was a farmer, resident of Cappagh [North] in the parish of Clonenagh.
