Thomas Gibbs Greenham

M, #10208, b. 15 August 1831, d. 21 July 1877

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 15 August 1831; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Christening: 28 August 1831; Maryborough
  • Death: 21 July 1877; Eramosa tp, Wellington county, Ontario
  • Note: In February 1856 Thomas Gibbs Greenham established and edited "The British Constitution," a newspaper in Fergus, Canada West (Ontario). In "Fergus: The Story of a Little Town," Hugh Templin (1933) reports: "The first issue of the British Constitution was distributed about he middle of February, 1855. The editor was Thomas Gibbs Greenham, an Irishman of good family. His sister lived with him in Fergus, and it is said she wrote some of the more breezy editorials, and that she was the one with a violent dislike for doctors and lawyers, sometimes expressed in print. For ten years, Mr. Greenham edited the paper, which, after the absorption of the Freeholder, was the only paper in Fergus, and then, in 1865, sold it to the Watt Brothers, young residents of the Village. To-day, he is remembered chiefly by the brilliant black and white checked trousers he wore when he had his picture taken" (p. 275).
The 1861 census shows him listed twice: in Arthur tp he is 28, head of a household of 5, one male not in the household; his occupation is "Editor & pr. Mt F Exp." Others in the household, all said to be members of the family and all single and born Ireland, were Sarah Maria Greenham 29, James Greenham 21 compositor, Robert W. Adams compositor 19. The other listing is in Fergus where the household consists of Thos. G. Greenham, printer, 28, Mar: Greenham widow 72 and Maria Greenham 27. Thomas sold the paper in June 1865, a few months prior to his marriage (source: Wright, 1932, p. 292--photo on p. 292 as well). The "Directory of the County of Bruce, Canada West," by J.W. Rooklidge (Montreal, 1867) shows Thomas Gibbs Greenham living in Huron Tp, Bruce County in 1867. To add to the confusion, the 1867 Wellington County Directory shows Thomas G. Greenham, farmer, St. Andrew, living in Fergus. In 1871 he was a farmer in Nichol tp, Lot 18, Con. 15, age 36; wife Lucy J. Greenham, born England, was 32. However, his death reg'n (#16136, Eramosa tp.) indicates his occupation was "Editor and Printer"; age 44; Church of England; cause of death consumption; informant Sam Ridgeway, farmer of Eramosa (whose wife was Martha Greenham, probably a sister of Thomas). I assume he was related to John Gibbs Greenham, who farmed in Eramosa, but have no documentation. Baptism for Thomas Gibbs Greenham, son of Robert Greenham and Margaret Clarke, born15 August 1831, bap Maryborough 28 August, must be this man.

Rice (of Clondarrig) Meredith

M, #10212, b. before 1775, d. April 1823

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Before 1775; possibly Queens County, Ireland
  • Death: April 1823
  • Burial: 13 April 1823; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Note: Not proven that the Rice who was buried 13 Apr 1823 (Maryborough burial register) was the husband of Anne Neill, but considered likely. Unfortunately, his age was not given in the burial register. Estimate of his birth date based on that assumption.
Rice and Anne probably had other children born before 1800--prior to the establishment of the surviving registers. One of these could have been Rice, born abt 1797 and whose wife was also named Anne. Their known sons were John and Thomas.
Rice may have been born in Wicklow or Dublin counties--he may have been among the early members of that branch to settle in Queen's county. Possibly a son of the John Meredith who registered title to lands in Cappagh in 1761? See separate entry.

Anne Neill

F, #10213, b. about 1770

Biography

  • Birth: About 1770; Ireland
  • Note: The last baptism record we have for Anne's children is 1816. As most women had their last child when they were in their mid-forties, I think it likely she would have been born between 1770 and 1775, but this may be completely off base!

Anne Bolton

F, #10214, b. about 1800, d. about 1860

Biography

  • Birth: About 1800
  • Marriage: 1826; John Meredith; Diocese of Ossory, Leinster Province, Ireland
  • Death: About 1860; Queen's county, Ireland
  • Note: Not confirmed that the John Meredith who married Anne Bolton was the son of Rice Meredith and Anne Neill, however all known records are consistent with that connection. It is assumed that Anne died about 1859/60 as it was recorded that land was transferred from Anne to George Meredith in 1859 and then to "Representatives of Anne Meredith" in 1860. Probably the Anne Meredith who lived on Block 1, Clondarrig in 1850.
  • Note: John Meredith; No baptisms identified for children from this family--perhaps were Methodists or other religion? Or lived in another parish? Anne's maiden name probably should be Bolton, not Botton as recorded in IGI--her son George's middle name was given as Bolton on his death registration and on that for one of his son's.
