John Clarke

M, #10180, b. about 1750, d. 1832

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1750
  • Marriage: Ireland
  • Death: 1832; Ireland
  • Burial: 13 September 1832; Church of Ireland, Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Note: Aged 82 at time of death. May have been the John Clarke who was Governor of the Maryborough Gaol in the late 1820s. If so, Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland claims he was also known as John Cromwell, which in turn could make him a son of Oliver Cromwell (see write-up for Turpin family, p. 713).
From British Parliamentary Papers 1808 Vol IX (239) Inspector General's Report of the State of the Prisons of Ireland for the year 1807
    29 - Queen’s County at Maryborough
William Pilsworth esq. - Local Inspector
    John Clarke - Gaoler
I inspected this Gaol last October, I found it clean and regular, and the bedding in extreme good order. The baths in both yards were repaired since my former visit, staunched and well supplied with water. The Gaoler occupies for his private use too many rooms. The female ward has no court-yard, which is a great deprivation; the women are obliged to sleep in the common hall for want of room; I charged the Inspector that he should insist on the Gaoler giving up a room belonging to that ward which he occupies, and directed a complaint to be made to the Judge at next Assizes if not complied with. The Inspector is very attentive to his duty, and the allowance of bread to the Prisoners is liberal.
38 Prisoners were tried at both Assizes; 11 ? or 25 ? were convicted, 3 capitally of whom 2 were executed. - 11 Crown Prisoners and 6 Debtors were in custody on 1st January 1808.
    From :
Letter from Reverend Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons Office, 70 Camden Street, Dublin, Inspector General of Prisons Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the attempted escape of convicts from the jail at Maryborough [Portlaoise], Queen's County [County Laois] and the subsequent charges made against Private David Knight, 2nd battalion of the Rifle Brigade, a guard posted in the court yard of the jail, 5 July 1819. Forster suggests changes to the design of the prison to prevent future escapes. Encloses the minutes of an inquiry into the conduct of John Clarke, gaoler, and William Southerland, turnkey, Maryborough Gaol, 28 June 1819. Also a letter from Archer to Gregory, on Archer's handling of the matter, and on the conduct of Clarke, and the punishment of Knight, the guard, 7 July 1819.
    1 Aug. 1820:
Letter from John Clarke, gaoler, Maryborough, Queen’s County [Laois], to Alexander Mangin, clerk, Civil Department, Dublin Castle, returning a respite over which some degree of misunderstanding had occurred: ‘it has been usual when sending a respite to the sheriff, to appraise the jailor also’.

she seems to be buried with her first husband--photo online at:

Richard Power Palmer

M, #10182, b. about 1857, d. 30 October 1884

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1857; London, England
  • Marriage: 26 September 1877; Clara Rosa Clarke; St George's Church, Guelph, Ontario
  • Death: 30 October 1884; Chicago, Illinois
  • Burial: Woodlawn Cem., Guelph, Ontario
  • Note: At the time of his marriage Richard Power was a bank clerk living in Toronto. However, "Rosa" and "Power" Palmer were living with William Clarke in Palmerston in 1881, where Power was an insurance agent.
Ontario death reg'n #: "R. Power Palmer" death registered in Wellington county, but indicates that he died in Chicago of an "overdose of laudanam", age 31; occupation insurance agent, here it says he was born in Ireland, but probably census report of England more likely to be correct. Tombstone photo online at: --seems to say born in 1851?
  • Note: Clara Rosa Clarke; Ontario marriage reg'n #11905: Witnesses were Rev. Michael Boomer, Dean of Huron Diocese and Constance M. Kingsmill of Walkerton, Ontario.

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 31 October 1878; Guelph, Ontario
  • Note: Ontario birth reg'n #33897: informant was Lionel Clarke (signature in registration form).
In February 1938 A.L. Palmer of 6 Clarendon Cres., Toronto, was the informant re: his mother's death.
In 1901 there was an Arthur Palmer, 22, living in Cariboo Crossing, Yukon Territory--possibly this man? No other possibilities found. 1909 Guelph death registration #34420 previously thought to be for this man: cause of death tuberculosis, age 39; occupation laborer, not married; born Peel tp, place of death was 69 Metcalfe St., Guelph. apparently not so!

John Gibbs Greenham

M, #10184, d. 28 November 1859

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Moyanna, Queen's county, Ireland
  • Christening: 16 April 1817; Stradbally, Queen's county
  • Marriage: 29 January 1845; Elizabeth Clarke; Maryborough, Queens County, Ireland
  • Death: 28 November 1859; Nichol tp, Wellington County, Canada West
  • Burial: Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus Ontario
  • Note: Daughter Caroline's marriage registration gives John's middle name as Gibbs and their first son was also named John Gibbs, suggesting this John is related to the Greenham family of Moyanna and Stradbally where Gibbs was a common first or middle name. Possibly the John Greenham who was a son of Robert and was christened in Stradbally in April 1817 (see separate entry) and possibly a brother of Thomas Gibbs Greenham, a farmer in Eramosa tp, Wellington county in 1871. John and Elizabeth were farming in Eramosa tp in the 1851 census (Microfilm #C-11756, Twp. No. 372, page 77)--perhaps Thomas took over John's farm after John's death? Sadly, the pages that provide the information on the exact location of the farm are so faint as to be illegible.
The 1851 census has them listed in Eramosa tp and has Thomas Clarke in the same household. It identifies the family as Church of England, but the children were baptised by Methodist preachers--I suspect there was no Anglican church in the vicinity. The Methodists sponsored a number of itinerant preachers in the rural parts of Canada West. John was said to be 37 years old (i.e., he would be turning 37 in 1852).
John's death was reported in the Fergus "The British Constitution" published 2 December, 1859. He was said to be 43 at the time of his death (source: "Fergus, Ontario, Canada: Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths 1857-1866," published by the Wellington County Branch, OGS, 2001).
  • Note: Elizabeth Clarke; Witnesses were William Hughes (probably Elizabeth's brother-in-law) and James Clarke. Both John and Elizabeth were residents of Maryborough parish (Register, p. 21, #61).

  • Birth: 29 August 1856; Nichol Tp, Wellington County, Canada West
  • Christening: 27 September 1858; Nichol Tp.
  • Death: Before 1920; Wisconsin
  • Note: I wonder if her birth year was actually 1858 and there was a transcribing error? There was a Carrie Greenham, age 32, living in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1891--probably this woman. Both of her parents were born in Ireland. Her occupation is illegible in the ancestry image. The 1900 census in Wisconsin indicates that Caroline immigrated in 1892. In 1910 she is said to have given birth to four children, three of whom were still living.

Rebecca Clarke

F, #10195, d. 7 April 1893

Parents

Biography

  • Christening: 13 March 1808; Coolbanagher Parish, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Marriage: 7 November 1840; William Hughes; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 7 April 1893; Dublin Street, Carlow
  • Note: Confimed Maryborough 1 May 1822, along with Eliza Clarke, Jane Clarke & James Hill Clarke.
A rent receipt to Rebecca was found among the papers of Samuel P. Turpin:
    Maryboro, Sept 20/[18]71
    To Rebecca Hughes ??
To one half years of House
    & premises in Quality Row
of Room in same house [this line seems to be an inset related to the following line--i.e., rented the entire house for a half year, and rented only one room for an extended period]
By 46 Weeks Rent from Nov 2nd
    1870 to Sept 20th 1871
    £ 2 - 14 - 0
Appears to have not had any children. Likely that Rebecca lived in Maryborough for about 11 months, ending Sept. 1871. Perhaps at that time she become an invalid and unable to care for herself? As this record was found among the papers of her niece's husband, it may be that he looked after her affairs for a time. Death registration indicates she was living in Carlow; cause of death was "paralysis, 7 days"; the informant was her niece, Rebecca Douglas, also of Dublin Street, who was present at the time of her death.
  • Note: William Hughes; William was a resident of Lea parish at the time of the marriage. Witnesses were Thomas Clarke and James Vanston (Register, p. 6, # 17). Rebecca's presumed father, Thomas Clarke, died in Lea parish, the home of William Hughes. William Hughes was a witness to the marriage of Elizabeth Clarke (presumed to be Rebecca's sister) and John Greenham.

Biography

  • Birth: About 1809; Ireland
  • Marriage: 7 November 1840; Rebecca Clarke; Maryborough, Queen's County, Ireland
  • Death: 9 May 1870; Graigavern, Queen's county, Ireland
  • Note: William was a resident of Lea parish at the time of his marriage to Rebecca Clarke, daughter of Thomas Clarke. The Griffiths Valuation records (approx. 1850) reveal that William Hughes held land in two townlands within Lea parish: Ballintogher and Graigavern. In both townlands there was a house listed on a property occupied by a William Hughes, suggesting there may have been two Williams. Patrick, Lawrence, Michael, George and John Hughes also held land in Lea parish.
Death registered Emo district, 1870, age 61; cause of death "Pulmonary Fever with Disease of Heart of Long standing, 6 days."
  • Note: Rebecca Clarke; William was a resident of Lea parish at the time of the marriage.
