Robert Meredith

M, #12577, b. 13 October 1862, d. 17 May 1922

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 13 October 1862; Simcoe county, Canada West (Ontario)
  • Death: 17 May 1922; Franklin tp, Parry Sound County, Ontario
  • Burial: 19 May 1922; St. Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery, Grassmere, Ontario
  • Note: Robert was 8 years old in 1871; 18 in 1881. He was a single farmer living in Franklin tp, Muskoka in 1911-- Methodist religion. Death registration (#25115) indicates his father was George Bolton Meredith; his mother's name was unknown, cause of death neurasthenia, age 61 yrs, 7 mos., 4 days; date of birth 13 October 1860. Robert had lived in Franklin tp for 47 years.
Muskoka Cemeteries, Sinclair Township, St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery :
Headstone reads: Robert, Son of George and Martha Meredith, Died May 17th, 1922, Age 59 years, 6 months. I believe this record is more accurate than the dates on the death registration, as there is no sign of Robert in the 1861 census, when it appears that Martha had not yet arrived in Canada.

William Meredith

M, #12578, b. 12 May 1864, d. 19 September 1893

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 12 May 1864; Essa tp, Simcoe county, Canada West (Ontario)
  • Death: 19 September 1893; Parry Sound, Muskoka, Ontario
  • Burial: St. Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery, Grassmere, Ontario
  • Note: Ontario death reg'n #11517: William accidentally shot himself at the age of 29, religion Church of England.
Muskoka Cemeteries, Sinclair Township: St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery :
Headstone transcript reads: William, Son of George and Martha Meredith, Died September 19th, 1898. Age 29 years, 4 months, 7 days. It appears the year of his death was misread on the tombstone, which is rather worn. If he was 29/4/7 on September 19, 1893, that would give a birth date of 12 May 1864, consistent with his age as reported on the censuses.

William Campbell James Meredith

M, #12592, b. 6 February 1904

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 6 February 1904; Montreal, Quebec
  • Note: MEREDITH, WILLIAM CAMPBELL JAMES (1904-1960):
W.C.J. Meredith, the son of Frederick Meredith, was born in Montréal and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in law in 1925. Admitted to the Bar of Québec in 1927, he practiced with the Montréal firm of Meredith, Holden, Heward and Holden, and was appointed K.C. in 1942. Meredith was the author of studies on criminal insanity, automobile accidents, and medical malpractice. He also served as a member of the Council for the Survey of the Legal Profession in Canada. He was appointed Dean of Law in 1950 [and served in that capacity until 1960, presumably until his death], Macdonald Professor of Law in 1955, and director of the Institute of Air and Space Law in 1958.
    UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES file Originals, 1927-ca 1950, 1 m (M.G. 4057):
Meredith's papers relate almost exclusively to his professional, philanthrophic and leisure activities prior to his appointment as Dean of Law. The largest series comprises correspondence files (1927-1945) dealing with his professional expenses, memberships, insurance, investments, and personal finances. Other professional papers include files on the survey of the Legal Profession in Canada 1945-1946, and an address to the Junior Bar Association on automobile accident law (1945). The philanthropic aspect of his work is documented by files on the Inns of Court Fund, 1947-1948; and particularly on Bishop's University, of which Meredith was a trustee, 1943-1950. Meredith was chairman of the Québec Committee, the Selwyn House School Association, 1945-1948. Correspondence regarding amateur radio licencing, transmission, and equipment reflects Meredith's favourite hobby, 1945-1947. The only material relating to his teaching career is an introductory lecture to first-year students entitled "The Legal Profession".

Daniel McIntomney

M, #12596, b. 28 February 1849

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 28 February 1849; Renfrew County
  • Note: I was given birth date of 28 February 1851 (this is the date on the 1901 census); however, on the 1851 census Daniel was listed as 3 years old (i.e., he would be turning 3 at his next birthday following January 1852), so I assume he must have been born in 1849. In 1901 Daniel was a carpenter and was living in Eganville, Ontario. In 1911 his occupation was "odd jobs," still in Eganville.
