[tribute by] GRAINNE FARREN – 13 OCTOBER 2013

ONE of Ireland's best-known and loved musicians, Chas Meredith (Rock Fox), has died aged 80.
Born in Dublin on January 16, 1933, Chas (Charles) Meredith was educated in the Quaker School in Waterford. A multi-instrumentalist and arranger who played trumpet, saxophones and clarinet, he was a vital part of the Irish jazz scene since the Fifties, when he led a band with clarinettist Phil Butler in Slattery's of Capel Street. The name Rock Fox was an inversion of Foxrock, the Dublin suburb where he lived at the time.
As the trumpeter/leader of the Rock Fox Famous Orchestra, he specialised in the music of Duke Ellington. Tributes to Ellington and Strayhorn continued to play an important part in his career over the years. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Duke, and indeed of jazz history in general, which he shared with listeners to his long-running weekly jazz programme on RTE Radio 1. Whether on the bandstand or on radio, his witty and erudite introductions to tunes were a big part of the entertainment.
He had a broad range and could play anything from ragtime to bebop, although he had a preference for swing and mainstream. His music was always imbued with feeling, a strong sense of rhythm and a love of melody. He led groups of all sizes, and his regular collaborators included John Wadham, Charlie Deveney, Dave Fleming, Malcolm Lee, Rory McGuinness, Jimmy McKay, Ian Henry and Jack Daly.
He played with numerous international musicians, notably the late Gerry Mulligan, who became a close friend and inspired his work on the baritone sax. Their joint composition Song for Johnny Hodges was recorded by Mulligan with Lionel Hampton.
Based in Dublin, he played mainly in Ireland but also performed in Britain and Portugal, and at festivals in Norway and the Cape Verde Islands. He appeared in and arranged music for stage shows including Lady Sings the Blues with Mary Coughlan and You Can't Deep Freeze a Red Hot Momma with Susie Kennedy. He recorded with the Rory McGuinness Quintet (Groovin' High, 1995), Mary Coughlan (Mary Coughlan Sings Billie Holiday, 2000) and Nigel Mooney (All My Love's in Vain, 2005).
For about a year, he played regularly in Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel, Killiney, with the Merrion Gates band, and after that was a frequent guest artist with the band. He had a lunchtime residency with guitarist Gerry Lynch in the Herbert Park Hotel. His last public appearance was in the Wishing Well, Blackrock, in April. He will be very much missed by a huge circle of friends, fans and fellow musicians.
Considering his active musical career, the surprising thing about Chas Meredith is that he was not a full-time musician. He had an equally active career as a solicitor until he took early retirement at the age of 50.
He was a member of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, with a particular passion for the restoration of the former Royal saloon coach 351 and first-class carriage 1142. He also took particular care of former Dublin and South Eastern railway locomotive 461 during his tenure as the Dublin locomotive officer for the RPSI in the early Nineties. He had a deep knowledge and interest of the workings of the steam locomotive and was always keen to pass on this knowledge in a constructive manner to the next generation. He was also part owner of the former Southern Railway locomotive City of Wells. Charles enjoyed nothing more than a pint of 'real ale' after a day on the footplate and would have been a familiar face to all those who have travelled on steam trains around Ireland.
Ornithology and foreign travel were among his many other interests.
