William Hornby

  • Note: William lived in Deer Park, Clonenagh parish, Queen's County when his daughter (her name not recorded) was buried 13 October 1761.

    William Hornby and his wife Hannah Oldum, married 1752, came from Queen's County, Ireland to Charleston, South Carolina, prior to 1776 - some years prior are indicated. Established himself as a merchant in the city. His children, Hannah, Eleanor, William, Phillip, and Thomas, were all born in Ireland, but the birth order is not known.
    The family were communicants of St. Michael's Church, Charleston, South Carolina. Records of the church were unfortunately destroyed by Gen. Sherman, during the War Between the States. Children Hannah, Eleanor and William Hornby, Jr. died unmarried.
    Philip married first in 1783 Henrietta Kelsall Goldsmith, a widow and daughter of John Kelsall and Mary Bellinger, in Georgia. She died in 1786. His second wife was Susanna Dick.
    Their children were:
    Claudia Kelsall HORNBY: born 3 FEB 1784 at Bryan Co., Georgia; died 12 NOV 1839 at Cheraw District, SC;
    and, Henrietta HORNBY: born 24 APR 1786 at Bryan Co., Georgia; married William Bullein JOHNSON 10 DEC 1803.

Death registration for Meredith, Mountmellick District, 1881, age 76, presumed to be this woman as well.

However, the names of two children support that conclusion, plus his daughter Rebecca is the right age to be the visiting niece of Rice, James and Susan at the time of the 1901 census. Death of Edward aged 55 in 1899 believed to be this man.
