Bishop Richard Meredith

  • Note: Richard was the son of Robert Meredith "ap Gronw," of Carnarvonshire. Robert's wife was Sarah Bathe (or Bathoe or Bathow). Richard was born in Wales and educated at Jesus College, Oxford, where he received a BA in 1573 and an MA in 1575, suggesting a birth date of approximately 1553. Richard also served as chaplain to Sir John Perrot and was, "imprisoned in the treasonable designs of Sir John Perrot 1591." He was appointed Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, in 1584, and served there until his death in 1597. He served as Bishop of Leighlin from 1589 until his death. He was buried in St. Patrick's "in the black tomb in the North side of the body of the Church neere the steeple door." (Clergy of Dublin and Glendalough, p. 887)
    FHC Film #1440954, Items 1-17, is a collection of abstracts and indexes of the St Asaph's Consistory Court. A 1606 probate entry for Richard Meredith (page 23) was the Bishop of Leighlin himself, married with "Sara Meredith". Will dated 28 July 1597. Probate 1606. Buried at St Patrick Church northside, Dublin.   • Note: Sarah was probably born in the late 1550s, as her eldest son was born about 1581. Sarah's second husband was living in Yorkshire when he died in 1643, so it is presumed that Sarah was living there as well.

  • Note: Robert attended Trinity College, Dublin, enrolling in 1609. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn 3 July 1611. Sir Robert Meredith was knighted in 1633, and served as M.P. for Augher in 1634, Athy in 1639 and Jamestown in 1661. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Ireland.

Robert Meredith

  • Birth: Before 1541; Probably Wales
  • Note: Some sources indicate that the father of Bishop Richard Meredith was also named Richard. However, Church of Ireland records say Robert. Robert Meredith lived in Carnarvonshire, Wales. One source suggests there was a third son who was a general, but we can find no documentation to support that.
    Much of the information on the descendants of Robert in this family tree is based on a pedigree chart held at the National Library in Dublin (GOMS 174, pp. 64-65), much of which is now believed to be in error. For updated information on the ancestry of this line see:

Thomas Meredith

  • Death: 29 June 1915; Ballycullane, Athy, County Kildare
  • Burial: 1 July 1915; Athy
  • Note: Thomas farmed ~64 acres at Coolbanagher from 1864 until 1892. Anecdotally, there were said to be 5 families "down the lane" at Coolbanagher with 70 children between them. He farmed at Ballyduff from 1892-1911 and died 29th Jun 1915, aged 87, at Ballycullane, Athy. Birth registration for son George lists Thomas' birthplace as Coolbanagher?
    When they lived at Ballyduff the three youngest daughters were confirmed in St. Paul's Church, Portarlingon (May, 1898 and May 1901). In the 1901 census Thomas and Rebecca and their children William, Emily, Sarah and James were in Ballyduff. In 1911 they lived in Ballycullane with 2 of their children, Emily and James. Thomas was said to be 83, Rebecca 68.
    Betty Meredith had told me Thomas was buried at Rosenallis, but she must have been referring to a different Thomas. Burial record is in Athy parish and says Thomas was a resident of "Birtown" at the time.
  • Note: Rebecca Strong; Married by license. PMK recorded date of 7 July whereas I recorded the date as 14 July?? Thomas Meredith, full age, farmer of Ballyduff, Stradbally parish, son of Samuel Meredith, farmer married Rebecca Strong, under age spinster of Shanbeg, Rosenallis parish, daughter of William Strong, farmer. Witnesses: James Wilkinson and William Strong.

  • Note: George lived in Mountbrook, Athy parish when he married. In 1896 George was present at the time his father died. He still lived in Mountbrook. In 1901 George and Esther were both 66 and farmed in "Monebrook", Tankardstown; they had no family. After his wife died George went to live with his brother Henry. He died at the age of 82, a widower. Cause of death was old age; informant was his nephew Robert Meredith.

Household in 1901: Joseph 63, Charlotte 51, son Henry 26, daughter Caroline 23, niece Mary Teague, 23 and a widow, grandnephews Willie and Bob Teague, ages 5 and 3. Mary and Willie Teague were both born in Africa; Bob in Queen's county--probably Robert Joseph Dudley Teague, birth registered 3rd qtr, 1897, Athy District.
    Calendar of Wills and Admons for 1913: Joseph Meredith Ballintubber Athy d. 12 Oct 1912 granted to Charlotte Meredith widow.
  • Note: Charlotte George; Marriage registration: witnesses were John George and Henry Meredith. The 1911 census indicates Joseph and Charlotte had been married 40 years.

  • Note: "Edward Ellis, born 1759, a married man with a wife and thirteen children, ten of which came with him [to the Bay Chaleur]. He petitioned for 200 acres west of Cranberry Brook in 1817. Although his name is not on the grant map the land he petitioned for is lot number six which was granted in the name of Richard Ellis. Francis, Thomas, Edward, John, Matthew, Robert and Richard are thought to be Edward's sons." (Pioneer Settlers of the Bay Chaleur, p. 14).

    Abstract of his will: New Bandon, "South Side of Chaleaur Bay," Gloucester County, Farmer. Will dated 8 December 1825. No record of probate in file. File dated 1827. Wife Mary ELLIS the dwelling house and the middle hundred acars of my farm during her life, and at her death to my youngest son Mathew ELLIS. The other two hundred to Richard and John ELLIS. Residue of estate to be divided among wife, Richard, John and Mathew ELLIS. As to the remainder of my family I have given them their share already. Son-in-law Alexander ANDERSON executor. Witnesses: Francis ELLIS, John NORTON, Margaret ELLIS.
