  • Death: 1939

However, the following is from the 1881 census CD. The family lived next to William Haggerty. This suggests that Mary must have been born in 1862 or 1863 and that she was Charles' wife in 1881.

Tim Haggertie

M, #1590, b. 4 August 1773

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 4 August 1773; County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: A Timothy Haggerty settled in Marlborough Twp, Ontario and received his land grant 2 November 1825. Florence Huff Haggerty believed he was the Tim from our family, although one of his descendants living in Toronto about 1940 denied that. The 1852 census does show a "Timethy" Hegarty, born Ireland, age 60, religion Roman Catholic in Marlborough tp, Carleton county. That Timethy would therefore have been born about 1792, too late to be our man. I have not found any other records that might be this person and therefore, unlike my grandmother, I suspect he must have died young. See separate entry for family of Timethy Hegarty of Marlborough.

James Haggertie

M, #1593, b. about 1710

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1710; Ireland
  • Death: Ireland
  • Note: James Haggertie became Parish Clerk of Kilmeen Parish 15 October, 1766. He replaced his father, also James, who had been the clerk for 56 years. The surviving Kilmeen parish vestry minutes book begins 1 April 1798, at which time a James Haggertie was parish clerk. He remained in that position until March 1811. The same James signed minutes as a member of the parish until 1826. He may have been either this man or a son of this James. I lean towards the latter as otherwise he would have been very elderly by 1826, but this may not be correct.
In 1766 James was the father of five children. The names of his wife and children are unknown. He may have been the grandfather or uncle (time-wise uncle seems more likely, but if so, why would the James born in 1790 have had possession of the documents about his appointment?) of William and others who were born between 1767 and 1792. On the 24th of March, 1788 it was noted that James was being paid a "maintenance" of "Eight Shillings and ninepence Sterling on Each and Every Plowland in [Kilmeen] Parish being 22 in number and ten Guineas Part of anothr Plowland." This notation is from a number of documents James Haggertie (1790-1870) brought to Canada when he immigrated from Ireland in 1827.
There was a will probated in 1772 naming a William "Hagertie" of Kilmeen parish--probably related to James, but that is the only record found to date of a William living at that time. See separate entry.
