Adam Haggertie

M, #7527, b. 1 February 1785

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1 February 1785; County Cork, Ireland
  • Note: The following was noted in one of the documents James Haggertie brought to Canada in 1827: "Adam went to Service the 20th of November 1827." As James came to Canada earlier in 1827, he would already have been in Canada, suggesting Adam may have been in Canada then as well? Or not? And what sort of "service" might that have been? All in all, Adam remains a mystery. I can find no further records of any kind for an Adam Haggertie of this age, either in Kilmeen Parish, elsewhere in County Cork, or anywhere in Canada.
At one time I thought the Adam Haggarty who married Susannah Kingston might be our Adam, as his sons' names match those of our family (eldest son is James and even a Marmaduke!). That Adam is known to have served in the Coast Guard, which could have been the "service" referred to above. However, the burial record of the Adam who married Susannah suggests he was born about 1799 (see separate entry). DNA testing reveals that the 1799 Adam was very closely related to the Kilmeen families, and Australian family records state that his sons who emigrated to Australia were related to the Kimeen Haggerties.
All in all, I conclude that EITHER this Adam was also the 1799 Adam, who was buried in Clontarf in 1878, and his age in his later years was very inaccurate; OR, the 1799 Adam was a close cousin of the Kilmeen brothers.

John Galbraith

M, #7533, b. 1768, d. 18 June 1843

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 1768; Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland
  • Death: 18 June 1843; Canada West
  • Note: Letter from Stella E. Asling Riis to Florence Huff Haggerty, 4 October, 1946:
[John] Galbraith was born in the Parish of Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He came to Vermont in 1785 to look after lands which his father had purchased in 1751. He remained in Vermont for some time and travelled about considerably to open up markets for his father’s woolen goods, he being a landowner and woollen merchant in Scotland. Then finding that the title to the lands was clouded in 1794 he left Vermont for Canada. On 4th November 1794 the following entry appears in his diary “Eighth Township of Upper Canada" (which is shown on our maps to be the Township of Augusta in the County of Grenville); “God has preserved me from the dangers of the journey. He preserved us on Lake Champlain when to all human appearances there was little hope of our reaching land.”
Mr. Galbraith remained in Augusta for several months and became acquainted with James Cron and his daughters. John seems to have fallen in love with Mary at first sight and in a month they were married. They came to Oxford County and settled in Blenheim Township, which is now near Princeton. He located Lot No. II in the first concession of Blenheim. Mary received a grant of lot No. I in the 3rd. Con. of Blenheim as the “daughter of James Cron, a United Empire Loyalist."
  • Note: Mary Cron; John's diary notes 28 March 1796 that he and Mary had a son.
