  • Note: A record found in the Simcoe County Branch of the Ontario genealogical Society publication: S.C.A.N., vol.10, #1 for 1992: Under Guardianships in 1847 was a notice from the "Barrie Magnet": "On Nov.12 1847 JOHN BANTING, yeoman of West Gwillimbury, served notice he was applying for the guardianship of John, Thomas, Susan, Sarah, George, and Esther SCYTHES, infant children of the late William SCYTHES, yeoman of W. Gwillimbury and the late Jane Scythes, his wife. John Banting claimed to be their next of kin. The claimant would give 20 days notice of his intention and then a lawyer would do the legal work, including the placement of notices over a 3 month period. If no one presented any detrimental evidence, then the guardianship became effective."

Esther (Hester Hettie) Meredith

  • Burial: Middleton cemetery, Simcoe County
  • Note: Esther and John came to Canada in 1842. Following the 1847 deaths of Esther's sister and brother-in-law, Jane and John Scythes, the Scythes children came to live with the Bantings. They lived in Thompsonville, about eight miles west of Bondhead, Simcoe County.
    The Bantings were grandparents of Sir Frederick Banting.

  • Burial: 6 April 1885; Maryborough, Queen's County
  • Note: May have been the Thomas Meredith of Cloneygowan, farmer, who was registered as a voter in Maryborough West, 5 January 1841. Recent discovery of death date for Thomas Sr. in 1844 suggests he could have been the registered voter. Burial record indicates Thomas was a resident of "The Oaks," aged 72, at the time of his death (p. 125). Death registration 2nd qtr Mountmellick district.
  • Note: Mary Meredith; Witnesses were R. Meredith and Thomas Bates, parish clerk.

  • Note: Listed as Susan in 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1901 she was living with son Wm and daughter "Eliza J." in Tecumseth tp. Census gives birth date as March 1836; however, she was said to be 62 on the Ontario death reg'n #24312: cause of death heart failure.
