In 1900 Clay and Alice had moved to Queens, New York, where Clay was said to be a "playwright" and were still there in 1910, when he was a "dramatic writer". They had 3 children, none of whom were still living in 1900.
In 1930 Clay was again living in San Francisco, retired, age 80; his wife was Laura [ancestry transcribed it Lena, but I think it's Laura] age 55, born Maryland. They had been married about 20 years at that time, suggesting that Alice must have died about the time of the 1910 census.
